Mr. Bullis seemed to have a direct answer to the problem that was concerning the experimenter. However, after using his book for several years and in different grade levels: sixth, seventh and eighth, it became apparent that no such single remedy would change the behavior or personality of children in a basic sense. It is the purpose of the study to evaluate the following hypothesis: There exists among students now in college a certain incidence of compulsitivity as indicated by an experimentally devised ratios of compulsion neurosis to hysteria*; this incidence is greater among those now in college than those not in college.

It is also a purpose of this study to contribute experimental evidence to the frequently reported observation that compulsion neurosis occurs more frequently in men than women.

While still attempting to decide on a topic for a thesis study, the author was asked, "How far from the up- ports of a continuous-bean reinforced-concrete bridge should the reinforcing for negative moment extend into the spany." It was a simple question, and the reason for it being asked was that a particular structure, the one shown in the frontispiece, had developed transverse cracks in the surface of the deck structure a distance of three and a half feet from the center of both interior supports. It was the purpose of this study: (1) to ascertain the amount and distribution of mental ability and scholastic achievement of the seventh-grade pupils of La Porte Junior High School, (2) to learn the degree to which these pupils were adjusted in self and social relationships, (3) to find existing relationships among achievement, intelligence, and personality adjustment as measured by standardized tests, and (4) to analyze the personality maladjustment that seemed present.
