Location, Location, Location: Geographic Qualities Of Political Instability And Military Coups, William O'Connell

Previous research has shown that political instability can lead to military coups, especially when it occurs close to the capital. However, other than proximity to the capital, no other geographic qualities of instability and their relationship to coups have been explored. Therefore, this dissertation serves as a detailed analysis of how the location of instability conditions its impact on coups.

To show how the locational qualities of instability influence coup likelihood, I borrow from expected utility models of coups, and explore how instability influences militaries’ disposition and ability to coup differently when it occurs in different areas within a country. …

This dissertation examines African American women as constituents, candidates, and policy entrepreneurs. It illuminates the ways in which Black women navigate the complexities of politics, while balancing their equally complex intersectional identities. It critiques the notion of African American women as politically marginalized actors and highlights the ways in which they surmount social, cultural, and political disadvantage to gain political success.

Political Science

Objective: Few studies have measured public attitudes about reform proposals for changing direct primaries. Despite strong public support over the past century for holding primaries, does the public want to change the direct primary, given its very low voter turnout and its potential role in fostering political polarization?. Method: Using a unique nationally representative survey of 3000 U.S. adults conducted in March 2023 by YouGov, this study shows that a majority of Americans support reform of primary elections. Results: The reforms which receive the greatest support are those that seem more “democratic” such as establishing national congressional primary and holding …

United Nations peacekeeping is experiencing a generational shift as several large missions downsize and close. Amid this change, this essay considers the future of the Protection of Civilians (PoC) mandate, which has been a priority of UN peacekeeping since it was first authorized twenty-five years ago. It argues that PoC has evolved significantly, expanding from a narrow focus on physical protection from immediate threats to a holistic approach that includes establishing a protective environment. Diving into the complex dynamics of income inequality, this dissertation studies the multifaceted relationships between democracy, economic development, and inequality, placing a spotlight on the mediating influence of Relative Political Capacity (RPC). Uncovering the pivotal role of RPC as democracies advance and economies progress, this research navigates the contours of income inequality. By dissecting distinct sub-samples of OECD and non-OECD countries, nuanced insights surface. The weaponization of rape in International Relations is often analyzed through the lens of Realism, focusing on cases where rape is systematically used as a tactic of war by enemy combatants or as “spoils of war”. This phenomenon is evidenced by high-profile incidents in World War II Japan (1941), Cambodia (1975), Guatemala (1978), Bosnia (1992), and Rwanda (1994). Jurnal Ekonomi dan Pembangunan Indonesia

This study aims to analyze the effect of political competition on health budgets in Indonesia. The analysis was conducted using a fixed-effects panel data regression approach for Indonesia’s regencies and municipalities between 2009 and 2019. To obtain robust results, this study uses three different measures of political competition, namely the Multiparty Margin Index, the Herfindahl-Hirschman Index (HHI), and the Effective Number of Parties (ENP) Index. The estimation results show that only legislative political competition has a significant and consistent negative effect on the health budget, it is similar to the Leviathan Model theory.

This article analyzes the mutual relationship of dependency between civil society and narco cartels in Tierra Caliente, focusing on civilian experiences in Michoacan, Guerrero and el Estado de México. This paper will examine the functions of La Familia Michoacana, Los Caballeros Templarios and Los Zetas through community service provisions and cartels’ governance. Additionally, socioeconomic factors of Tierra Caliente will be examined to determine which types of communities lend themselves to cartels to provide community provisions as I argue that socioeconomic factors drive cartels’ operations and behaviors.

This research paper examines the role of how program participation in food access programs influences political participation in the US, specifically “Does program participation in food access programs, such as receiving benefits from SNAP or WIC, influence political participation?” Using a self-reported, weighted 2017 survey of Rural America, this study demonstrates how people receiving food benefits within the last year affect their political participation, specifically how they voted in the 2016 presidential election. Most people who perform a heroic act will, afterward, deny that their actions were heroic and claim that anyone would have done the same, even though that is demonstrably false (and, often, others were present who failed to act heroically at all). The literature on the psychology of heroism has never investigated why this is. This theoretical paper proposes an answer and seeks to provoke exploration of a previously unexplored topic. Originating in the early 1990s with opposition to illegal commercial fishing, the movement has evolved to resist the Chana Industrial Estate Project. The research addresses key questions concerning factors sustaining the movement, tactical adaptations, societal impacts, and its reflection of Thailand’s contemporary political landscape. While the existing literature on women’s rights has extensively studied the effects of international norms and regimes’ strategic choices on advancing women’s rights across time and space, the research on the effects of state capacity on women’s rights promotion has been strikingly limited. In this paper, I argue that the robustness of state institutions is a prerequisite factor for advancing women’s status irrespective of regime type and international incentives. This undergraduate research thesis aims to examine the implications of clientelism in Morocco from the perspectives of the citizens. Clientelism, or patronage-based political exchange can have a significant impact on political systems, and representative politics. While studies have been done examining citizen’s perspectives on clientelism, this aimed to be the first study in the context of Morocco.
