This dissertation examines the global adoption of cryptocurrency, challenging the broad narrative that it would fundamentally revolutionize finance through decentralization, depoliticization, and democratization. Despite not fully delivering on these transformative promises, cryptocurrencies have continued to gain traction. This dissertation delves into the political economy aspects that fuel this sustained adoption. Through quantitative examination of data from the International Monetary Fund, Statista, World Uncertainty Index, and the World Bank, this study investigates the complex interplay of factors influencing cryptocurrency adoption. Transportation is a crucial source of air pollution in the United States, accounting for nearly 30% of all greenhouse gas emissions. One traditional aspect distinguishing the common law system from the civil law one lies in the perceived disparities in the inspiration of the law-making process. The Anglo-Saxon system typically grounds its rules in explicit and discernible policies spanning social, anthropological, and economic realms directly relevant to the circumstances. In contrast, the civil law tradition frequently necessitates a fixed conceptual framework, sometimes detached from the practical needs of society. Human trafficking appears in many forms and affects millions of people every year. In addition to the direct consequences of human trafficking, the crime violates international laws and universally recognized human rights while providing a lucrative revenue source for criminals. The full effects of human trafficking remain unknown due to several challenges to collecting accurate information. Victims of human trafficking are reluctant to seek assistance from law enforcement for fear of punishment from traffickers, arrest, incarceration, or deportation from immigration officials. Although there has been recent focus on child welfare to prevent removals, little literature has examined reasons children are removed among diverse developmental stages. The present study explores the multifaceted demographics of children in the foster care system in order to recognize who is being affected by what removal causes. The purpose of this study is to better understand the foster care system to target interventions and screenings for children under eighteen years of age in the United States. The State of Texas supports the largest prison system in the US and held 132,859 people in 100 units scattered across the state as of December 2023. Approximately 70% of Texas prison beds are not air conditioned, despite the state’s reputation for dangerously hot, humid summers. The State has officially recorded temperatures inside Texas prison facilities as high as 120 degrees with heat index values of over 150. This paper examines how a number of Irish political journalists, working for both traditional newspapers and an online news website, deal with the problem of fake news. The aim is to gain an understanding of what the journalists’ perception of political fake news is and the methods they employ to manage it - a sorely under researched topic. Our findings show that the journalists we spoke with feel there are a range of forms that fake news assumes, many of them insidious and challenging to overcome with facts. In 1976 the Argentine government was taken over by a right wing military junta, attempting to “save” their country from communism. Military officials kidnapped, tortured and killed between 10,000 and 30,000 Argentine citizens, who were thought of as “guerrillas” supporting the leftist government and the late president Juan Perón. These victims are regarded as the disappeared, or Los Desaparecidos; due to the fact their families had no knowledge of where their loved ones were taken, or what was happening to them. Fourth-branch accountability can be characterized as a constitutional trust-type mandate to provide intrastate nonpartisan accountability with a broad repertoire of institutional capacities. Fourth-branch institutions play a significant role in protecting constitutional democracies, and their role in the system of political accountability becomes especially apparent when political oppositions are unwilling or unable to perform a partisan check. These institutions partly emerge from distrust in the political branches’ ability to ensure accountability in a partisan world. Thus, they are designed to be insulated from partisan pressures and anchored to the core principles of legality and impartiality. However, fourth-branch institutions do not exist …

After more than 20 years of costly military adventures, the United States has failed to root out extremism or bring liberal democracy to the oppressed. Thousands of American soldiers have lost their lives in the failed wars in Afghanistan, Iraq, and beyond—and the death toll among civilians is in the millions. In the wake of these calamities, progressives have united around an overriding foreign policy prescription: the United States should jettison its world-dominating ambitions, restrain itself from taking on new commitments, and retrench from the world, shrinking the U.S. military’s footprint. The field of “transitional justice” refers to a range of processes and mechanisms for accountability, truth-seeking, and reconciliation that governments and communities pursue in the aftermath of major societal traumas, including civil war, mass atrocities, and authoritarianism. This relatively new field emerged in the 1980s as scholars, practitioners, and policymakers looked for guidance to support post-authoritarian and post-communist transitions to democracy in Eastern Europe and Latin America. Since then, the field has grown rapidly—so rapidly that it is outpacing its capacity to learn from past mistakes. Despite a renewed interest in the health of the US administrative state, the absence of meaningful time-series measures of bureaucratic capacity hinders the testing of core theories of bureaucratic and executive politics. Using over 190 million personnel records, I estimate 5590 yearly policymaking-capacity scores for 261 unique agencies from 1998 to 2021. These measures provide an invaluable tool as either an independent or dependent variable in studies of administrative policymaking. To illustrate the value of these measures, I test longstanding theories about the relationship between bureaucratic autonomy and capacity. In this paper, we explain how presidents strategically invest in administrative capacity, noting that presidents have few incentives to invest effort in capacity building in most agencies. We test our account with two analyses. First, we examine the time it took for the Bush, Obama, Trump, and Biden Administrations to nominate individuals to appointed positions. We find that presidents prioritize appointments to policy over management positions and that nominations occur sooner in agencies that implement presidential priorities. Second, we examine the responses of federal executives to the 2020 Survey on the Future of Government Service to see whether perceptions of …

The nation of Poland had a well-established national identity based on its culture, religion, language, and history prior to its occupation by the USSR, but this identity was suppressed in the sixty years of Soviet control from 1939 to 1989. After achieving their independence, Poles reexamined their history and identity, in addition to choosing which aspects of Soviet history and identity to keep or do away with. North Carolina has been the subject of controversy surrounding voting rights for many years. Those controversies include voting ID laws, voter intimidation at the polls, and systematic changes to early voting times, dates, and locations. The North Carolina General Assembly has been accused of gerrymandering the district maps to dilute the vote of Democrats and people of color. This study looks at how registered voters in North Carolina perceive their access to voting despite the controversies. Despite the importance of predictive judgments, individual human forecasts are frequently less accurate than those of even simple prediction algorithms. At the same time, not all forecasts are amenable to algorithmic prediction. Here, we describe the evaluation of an automated prediction tool that enabled participants to create simple rules that monitored relevant indicators (e.g., commodity prices) to automatically update forecasts. We examined these rules in both a pool of previous participants in a geopolitical forecasting tournament (Study 1) and a naïve sample recruited from Mechanical Turk (Study 2). This article explores the use of religious symbolism in the populist rhetoric of Poland's Law and Justice (PiS) party and Hungary's Fidesz party. Both parties leverage historical and cultural narratives emphasizing Christianity's role in their national identities to legitimize their political agendas and mobilize support. The study examines how these populist leaders incorporate religious imagery and language to create a moral dichotomy between the “righteous people” and the “corrupt elite,” thereby deepening societal divisions and undermining democratic governance. The public administration literature provides many assertions as to what causes a city manager to consider when to remain in their position or relocate to a new position. This study identified variables that impact the decisions to change cities. This research surveyed current city managers in northern Midwest states to explore which variables make a difference. The variables were categorized to include considerations about personal concerns, career motivations, and organizational contexts. Institutionalising parliamentary opposition ensures political pluralism, and an opposition needs constitutional protections to enable it to demand accountability and seek scrutiny over the executive. How did the Constituent Assembly of India envision the idea of parliamentary opposition? Did it take the issue seriously? Or, overshadowed by the burgeoning dominance of the Congress Party, was it apprehensive about providing constitutional space for the opposition? Proposed regulations for alcohol advertising prevent beverage companies from targeting people under the legal drinking age. However, similar regulations for alcohol alternative beverages are less explored, which could allow alcohol alternative products to create awareness for alcoholic beverages among youth. Alcohol alternatives beverages, including no-alcohol and low-alcohol products, are increasing in popularity and can function as compliments to alcoholic products to decrease the total alcohol volume consumed or as substitutes for alcoholic products. สารนิพนธ์ฉบับนี้ศึกษาบทบาทที่มิใช่การรบของกองทัพเรือไทย โดยเฉพาะในด้านการช่วยเหลือด้านมนุษยธรรมและการบรรเทาสาธารณภัย ซึ่งมีความสำคัญเพิ่มมากขึ้นในบริบทของภัยคุกคามรูปแบบใหม่ เช่น ภัยธรรมชาติ ความมั่นคงด้านสิ่งแวดล้อม และความมั่นคงมนุษย์ การศึกษานี้มุ่งวิเคราะห์ยุทธศาสตร์ กลไกการจัดการ และบทบาทของกองทัพเรือผ่านกรอบแนวคิดทฤษฎีสถาบันเสรีนิยมใหม่ (Neoliberal Institutionalism) ที่เน้นความร่วมมือระหว่างรัฐและบทบาทของสถาบันระหว่างประเทศในการสร้างระเบียบและข้อตกลงร่วม งานวิจัยใช้ระเบียบวิธีเชิงคุณภาพผ่านการศึกษาข้อมูลจากเอกสารและแหล่งข้อมูลต่างประเทศและในประเทศ ผลการวิจัยพบว่า กองทัพเรือไทยได้พัฒนากลไกการจัดการ เช่น ศูนย์บรรเทาสาธารณภัยกองทัพเรือ และเข้าร่วมการฝึกร่วมระดับภูมิภาคและระดับโลก เช่น การฝึก Cobra Gold, Blue Strike และ Pacific Partnership ตลอดจนมีการส่งกำลังช่วยเหลือในเหตุการณ์สำคัญทั้งในประเทศและต่างประเทศ เช่น สึนามิปี พ.ศ.2547 และภารกิจในประเทศอินโดนีเซีย การศึกษาชี้ให้เห็นว่ากองทัพเรือไทยไม่เพียงแต่ตอบสนองต่อภารกิจความมั่นคงในรูปแบบดั้งเดิมเท่านั้น แต่ยังมีบทบาทสำคัญในความมั่นคงยุคใหม่ ที่เน้นความร่วมมือระดับภูมิภาคและสากล เพื่อรองรับภัยคุกคามที่ซับซ้อนและขยายตัวมากขึ้น

หัวข้อวิจัยนี้มีเป้าหมายเพื่อศึกษาผลกระทบของนโยบายฟรีวีซ่าต่อความมั่นคงของประเทศไทย โดยมุ่งเน้นที่ความเสี่ยงเชิงความมั่นคงที่เกิดขึ้นควบคู่กับความพยายามในการฟื้นฟูเศรษฐกิจผ่านการท่องเที่ยว ในปี พ.ศ.2557 จนถึงปัจจุบันที่ประเทศไทยดำเนินนโยบายฟรีวีซ่ากับหลายประเทศเพื่อดึงดูดนักท่องเที่ยว การศึกษานี้เริ่มต้นจากการสำรวจพัฒนาการของนโยบายส่งเสริมการท่องเที่ยวตั้งแต่แคมเปญ Amazing Thailand จนถึงนโยบายฟรีวีซ่าล่าสุด โดยมุ่งวิเคราะห์ความท้าทายในการสร้างสมดุลระหว่างการเติบโตทางเศรษฐกิจกับการรักษาความมั่นคงของรัฐพร้อมทั้งเปรียบเทียบกับกรณีศึกษาจากต่างประเทศ เช่น สหรัฐอเมริกา ที่เคยประสบปัญหาความมั่นคงจากการเปิดพรมแดนแบบไร้เงื่อนไขจากการศึกษา พบว่าแม้การใช้ฟรีวีซ่าจะช่วยเพิ่มจำนวนนักท่องเที่ยวและสร้างรายได้ในระยะสั้น แต่หากไม่มีโครงสร้างรองรับที่เพียงพอ เช่น ระบบประเมินความเสี่ยงล่วงหน้า ฐานข้อมูลร่วม หรือกลไกติดตามหลังการเข้าเมือง ก็อาจกลายเป็นช่องว่างที่เปิดโอกาสให้เกิดอาชญากรรมข้ามชาติการประกอบธุรกิจผิดกฎหมาย การใช้วีซ่าผิดประเภท หรือการตั้งถิ่นฐานแบบผิดกฎ ซึ่งล้วนเป็นความท้าทายใหม่ในมิติความมั่นคง ผลการวิจัยชี้ว่า ปัญหาหลักไม่ได้อยู่ที่ตัวนโยบายฟรีวีซ่า แต่เกิดจากความไม่สอดคล้องกันของหน่วยงานภาครัฐและข้อจำกัดด้านศักยภาพของกลไกสนับสนุนภายในประเทศ ดังนั้น แนวทางที่เหมาะสมคือการพัฒนาเครื่องมือเชิงนโยบาย เช่น ระบบข้อมูลร่วม ระบบติดตามที่มีประสิทธิภาพ และการวัดคุณภาพนักท่องเที่ยวควบคู่ไปกับการสร้างความร่วมมือกับประเทศต้นทาง เพื่อลดความเสี่ยงและเสริมความยั่งยืนให้นโยบายฟรีวีซ่าในบริบทของประเทศไทย

Everyday political discourse centers around the direction of voting far more than the choice to vote itself, despite low turnout rates in the United States overall, and especially in local and non-presidential elections. No existing model provides a complete explanation of the reasons and influences that cause individuals to participate in politics by casting a ballot, and the literature is especially fractured with regards to issue-specific activation of voters. This work expands on previous issue-focused studies by performing turnout analyses for Virginia counties alongside geographic analysis of infrastructure quality and access.
