Russia’s stranglehold on oil and gas as a resource, and use of energy as a weapon is a long standing humanitarian crisis as shown by the cut off of oil exports to former Soviet Republics, in efforts to gain political and economic dependence, resulting in, as one example shows, electricity and heat suspensions of innocent citizens homes. Other concerted efforts of Moscow include control over export routes, the attempt to reinstate the Soviet Union, and the intimidation of the Western World. Since the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, members of the Sikh-American community have been the subjects of random hate crimes in the United States because of their distinct identity, namely the turban. During and after the 2016 presidential election, many minority groups, including Sikh-Americans, were concerned over the rhetoric the then-candidate Donald Trump had been using. This paper uses cognitive mapping techniques to understand how brand associations, an important aspect of political brand equity are formed, differ, and change, from the perspective of citizens, across the four largest Irish political parties between 2013 and 2016. The paper focuses in particular upon the strength, favourability and uniqueness of these brand associations. The results constitute a first attempt to longitudinally explore changing political brand associations through cognitive mapping techniques, using data generated with the participation of hundreds of citizens. Democracy is at risk worldwide. And the economy may be, too.

Seventy-one out of the world’s 195 countries saw their democratic institutions erode in recent years, according to the 2018 year-end report by democracy watchdog Freedom House, a phenomenon known as “democratic backsliding.” Signs of backsliding include elected leaders who expand their executive powers while weakening the legislature and judiciary, elections that have become less competitive and shrinking press freedom.

In the aftermath of granting asylum to Rahaf Mohammed Alqunun, a Saudi woman fleeing alleged abuse, Canada under Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has positioned itself prominently on the global stage. This humanitarian gesture not only burnishes Trudeau’s credentials as a champion of women’s rights but also challenges Saudi Arabia’s policies, notably amidst international backlash over the Jamal Khashoggi case. Trudeau’s stance, leading up to the federal election and the Women Deliver conference, underscores Canada’s commitment to feminist foreign policy. Should Americans continue to honor the symbols and leaders of a group who rebelled against their country and fought to preserve the enslavement of African Americans on the basis of preserving heritage? In this paper, I look through American history and identify how the Confederate symbols in question have been connected with racism throughout the past. I then debunk some of the misconceptions commonly associated with Southern history and the Confederate symbols. I conclude with the outcomes of the recent removals in New Orleans and Dallas and address how this debate connects to the issue of racial injustice.

I have long considered themes of the body. Drawing on my knowledge as a fashion designer, I bring materials and hardware from the fashion industry into my artwork transforming and rendering them non-functional. My sculptures relate to stories of isolation, separation, and confinement. The following pages will analyze how the United States penal system controls, constrains and restricts the body through physical and psychological wounds. Furthermore, they will examine how the Catholic Church controls people’s minds and behavior through a ritualistic belief system.
