Understanding Policy Change In Developing Countries: The Spheres Of Influence Framework, Paul F. Steinberg

National policy reform is a prerequisite for improved stewardship of the global environment and figures prominently among the goals of international environmental diplomacy and transnational advocacy campaigns. Yet research on global environmental politics has proceeded absent models of policy change in developing countries, where most of the planet's people, land, and biological diversity are found. In this article I present a theoretical framework to explain the domestic responses of developing countries to global environmental concerns. The "Marginalized Violent Internal Conflict" (Mvic) Model And The Ogoni Conflict In The Niger Delta Of Nigeria, John Osayere Agbonifo

The Ogoni people, and later other ethnic minority groups m the Niger Delta, embarked on violent resistance against environmental pollution and degradation occasioned by the unclean energy operations of oil transnational corporations, notably Shell, in the 1990s. Several explanations have been adduced for the outbreak of hostilities and the motives of the insurrectional I eaders. Little, however, has been done in terms of efforts geared at understanding the nature of the conflict through the application of conflict models and typologies and the comparative study of the Niger Delta conflicts with the contentious politics of other aggrieved and marginalized peoples e …

The Lion And The Lamb: Demythologizing Franklin Roosevelt's Fireside Chats, Elvin T. Lim
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
We are accustomed to a characterization of Franklin Roosevelt’s legendary Fireside Chats as intimate exchanges between the president and the people. This essay argues that the Fireside Chats were a harsher, more castigatory rhetorical genre than such a characterization would allow. A content analysis of the 27 Fireside Chats recorded in FDR’s Public Papers suggests that the Fireside Chats were, on a number of indices, far less intimate than have traditionally been supposed, and in fact among the more vitriolic and declamatory utterances of the 32nd president. This chapter traces the evolution of African American electoral participation and characterizes the political behavior that it has generated for this racialized community. First, the chapter examines this community's behavior relative to the various political parties, the standard vehicles through which electoral participation is executed. It then examines the voting behavior of African Americans. This is followed by case studies examining Black third-party efforts, political behavior during Reconstruction, and Jesse Jackson's bid for the presidency.

In recent years there has been growing speculation regarding an increase in the number of African Americans identifying themselves as conservatives. Much of this speculation has been heightened by the increase in the number of African American elites who identify themselves as conservatives. This list includes icons like Clarence Thomas, J.C. Watts, Alan Keyes and Ward Connerly, to name a few. Despite the increase in the number of African American elites who identify themselves as conservatives, there has been a dearth of systematic analyses to determine if this phenomenon has trickled down to the masses.
