American Indians In Court: The Burger And Rehnquist Years, John R. Hermann

Political Science Faculty Research

The Supreme Court and individual justices' treatment of American Indian interests has generated relatively little scholarly attention. To fill this void in the extant literature, this study seeks to examine how American Indian interests fared before the Supreme Court of the United States during the Burger and Rehnquist Courts (1969-1992 October terms) and attempts to discern the factors influencing their treatment. The findings indicate that while American Indian interests won 48% of their cases, the Burger Court was much more sympathetic than the Rehnquist Court to the plight of this politically disadvantaged group. This study explored the cumulative effect of three years of exposure to teaching strategies being promoted in a local school district's systemic reform on elementary students' attitudes towards school science, awareness of science careers, and science achievement. The reform effort, referred to as the "Science: Parents, Activities, and Literature" (Science PALs) program focused on incorporating children's literature and parent partners using an interactive-constructivist epistemology as its base. Individual teachers were rated by the school district's science coordinator on their use of specific Science PALs strategies. Public Opinion On The Third Term City Charter Amendment (April, 2000), Susan E. Howell

This survey presents the opportunity to examine whether opinions have shifted in support for the third term charter change over the last year. It represents voters' opinions on a controversial issue that has received an increased amount of media attention. When compared with voters' opinions in 1999, the results demonstrate that support for the charter change has declined. A closer look shows that this decline in support was primarily due to a shift in blacks' opinions. It seems that greater exposure to the issue leads to greater opposition. The third term charter change still remains a racially divisive issue. Only …

The resurgence of nationalism taking place throughout Eastern Europe and the Former Soviet Union raises important questions with respect to ethnic political mobilization, particularly with respect to the potential for ethnic separatism. Moreover, the region provides scholars an excellent setting in which to study the political effects of constitutional choices. This article, utilizing a rationalist approach which emphasizes the cost-benefit calculus of ethnic groups, seeks to analyze the impact of one such constitutional choice, the electoral system. This study provides an assessment of the overall comparative performance of 178 small to mid-size bus transit operations located in the United States, during 1997. It uses commonly applied measures of resources and results. This is the only known study that compares and ranks small to mid-size bus systems by combining both resources and results.

The selected data comes from the Federal Transit Administration's (FTA) National Transit Database Profiles: Agencies in Urbanized Are·as with a Population of Less than 200,000. The nationally reported data is collected and published by the FTA under Section 15 of the Transit Act. Davis, …

CAPS Working Paper Series

This paper raises serious doubts about the theme that depicts “China as a corporatist system”, and argues that, although the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) is truly loosening its control over the state enterprises, it still maintains its formal authority and is still playing a leading role in the industrial system. A clarification of the notion is timely in view of the conceptual ambiguity involved. Corporatism could be understood as a set of structures, which link society with the state; in other words, it could be studied as a broader problem of interrelationships between state and society.

In 1997, Ira Katznelson contributed to the ongoing discussion among social scientists and historians about how to analyze class formation and the development of the American state. He was particularly interested in tying this research to the history of liberalism in an effort to both historicize the generalizations of Louis Hartz and address the question of American exceptionalism. Evaluating the body of research, Katznelson argued that authors had too frequently abstracted the state from its context and then used it to explain the very phenomena that helped define the state's character in the first place.
