Cuba has pervaded U.S. consciousness for several decades. For nearly fifty years the United States has continuously threatened and feared one of our closest neighbors. Lawmakers have fretted over the stubbornness of its communist leadership. Though the longevity and persistence of Fidel Castro's rule might be an understandable concern for U.S. policyrnakers, there are several other issues apparent within the island which are certainly worthy of our attention. The highways are adorned with colorful billboards praising the communist government and Fidel Castro exudes pride and confidence during each of his public appearances. When Dwight D. Eisenhower was elected President of the United States in 1952, America held its breath to see how a Republican administration would handle the Cold War. By 1952, due particularly to the costs of the Korean conflict, enthusiasm for President Harry Truman and Secretary of State Dean Acheson's policy of "containment" of Communism reached new lows. Eisenhower had been elected with a mandate from the citizenry: to get tough on communism. Commonalties in language, religion, history, politics and economics have retained positive ties between the nations of Latin America. However, in lieu of the transnational problems that the region is facing in the areas of the environment, drugs and hunger, mere cultural and historical commonalties will not be enough to establish the regional cooperation desperately needed in Latin America to procure its economic future . Many organizations have thus been created to further cooperation and integration in the region. These initiatives, however, lack certain characteristics needed for successful regional integration. Rights And Culture In The Asian Values Argument: The Rise And Fall Of Confucian Ethics In Singapore, Neil A. Englehart

The claim that cultural factors such as "Asian Values" really do militate against democracy and human rights is evaluated. The Asian Values claims of the Singapore government--both in its first incarnation, as Confucian Ethics, and its current form, as Shared Values--have actually been advanced for political and ideological reasons and have very little to do with the traditional mores of the population.
