The Political Personality Of 2012 Republican Presidential Candidate Mitt Romney, Aubrey Immelman Jul 2012

The Political Personality Of 2012 Republican Presidential Candidate Mitt Romney, Aubrey Immelman

Psychology Faculty Publications

This paper presents the results of an indirect assessment of the personality of Willard Mitt Romney, Republican presidential candidate in the 2008 U.S. presidential election and Republican presidential nominee in 2012.

The study was conducted in 2007–2008 and 2012, from the conceptual perspective of personologist Theodore Millon. Information concerning Romney was collected from biographical sources and media reports and synthesized into a personality profile using the Millon Inventory of Diagnostic Criteria (MIDC), which yields 34 normal and maladaptive personality classifications congruent with Axis II of DSM-IV.

The personality profile yielded by the MIDC was analyzed on the basis of …

Is Power Zero-Sum Or Variable-Sum? Old Arguments And New Beginnings, James H. Read Mar 2012

Is Power Zero-Sum Or Variable-Sum? Old Arguments And New Beginnings, James H. Read

Political Science Faculty Publications

The political and social world in which we live and act is partly constituted by the words we use and the way we use them. What power is and how power works is shaped by what we collectively think it is and how we think it works.

This essay revisits the question of whether power should be understood as inherently zero-sum (gains for some entailing equivalent losses for others) or variable-sum (both mutual gains and mutual losses of power are possible). The zero-sum assumption is very old (predating by thousands of years the game-theoretic shorthand) and draws its force from …

Fleeing North: An Examination Of U.S. Refugee And Asylum Policy Towards Nicaragua, Anthony Jensen Jan 2012

Fleeing North: An Examination Of U.S. Refugee And Asylum Policy Towards Nicaragua, Anthony Jensen

Political Science Student Work

This project examines the way in which the United States forms its asylum and refugee policies. Specifically, it examines the case of asylum and refugee policy towards Nicaragua from 1979 to 1989. The question posed is the following: Why and how does the United States government create asylum and refugee policies? Traditionally the United States’ asylum and refugee policies have largely been understood as being “receptionist” to individuals fleeing states deemed hostile by the United States government and “restrictionist” to individuals fleeing states deemed non-hostile. The case of Nicaragua complicates this picture, though, as asylum and refugee acceptance rates throughout …

The Secession Of South Sudan: A Case Study In African Sovereignty And International Recognition, Christian Knox Jan 2012

The Secession Of South Sudan: A Case Study In African Sovereignty And International Recognition, Christian Knox

Political Science Student Work

This thesis focuses on the recent secession of South Sudan. The primary research questions include an examination of whether or not South Sudan’s 2011 secession signaled a break from the O.A.U.’s traditional doctrines of African stability and noninterference. Additionally, this thesis asks: why did the United States and the international community at large confer recognition to South Sudan immediately upon its independence? Theoretical models are used to examine the independent variables of African stability, ethnic secessionism, and geopolitics on the dependent variables of international recognition and the Comprehensive Peace Agreement. The history of Sudan's peace process is explored, as well …

Mozambique's "Land Grab": Exploring Approaches To Elite Policymaking And Neoliberal Reform, Hannah Wittmeyer Jan 2012

Mozambique's "Land Grab": Exploring Approaches To Elite Policymaking And Neoliberal Reform, Hannah Wittmeyer

Political Science Student Work

Large-scale farmland acquisitions in Africa – widely known as “land grabbing” – have increased dramatically over the past few years. By the end of 2011, governments negotiating these leases transferred over 50 million hectares of fertile land to foreign investors. Alarmed by the implications of food and bio-fuel crops being grown and exported from food-insecure states, international media and activist organizations have used “neo-colonialism” as an epithet to describe the wave of investments – implying exploitation by foreign powers and corporate interests.

This contribution instead analyzes “land grabbing” from a competing perspective. I begin by asking why African states choose …

Power And The Polis: A Study In Macintyrean State Theory, Benjamin Sehnert Jan 2012

Power And The Polis: A Study In Macintyrean State Theory, Benjamin Sehnert

Classics Student Work

Alasdair MacIntyre’s theory of the state is often viewed by critics as being unnecessarily hostile to modern political arrangements, particularly the modern state. However, many critics of MacIntyre do not argue on MacIntyre’s own terms, that is, they argue from distinctly modern positions. The first section of the thesis will be devoted to explaining why such criticisms of MacIntyrean state theory are bound to fail or at least be easily dismissed. I will discuss in particular MacIntyre’s theory of tradition-dependent rationality and how one must work to develop an idea within a tradition rather than attacking it from the outside. …

Jurisdiction‐Granting: Legislative Capacity And Ideological Distance, Seth W. Greenfest Jan 2011

Jurisdiction‐Granting: Legislative Capacity And Ideological Distance, Seth W. Greenfest

Political Science Faculty Publications

This paper examines the conditions under which Congress passes jurisdiction-granting legislation, legislation that expands the discretion of the federal district courts by designating them as venues in which policy questions are to be heard. This project extends existing research that has demonstrated that Congress manipulates the parameters of jurisdiction by examining the manner in which Congress routinely engages in this activity. I construct and evaluate a comprehensive dataset of laws in which Congress grants jurisdiction to the district courts for the period between 1949 and 2000 with the goal of explaining conditions under which Congress grants jurisdiction Two explanations are …

Intelligence Gap: Advanced Military Technology And Law Of War Compliance, Christi Siver Sep 2010

Intelligence Gap: Advanced Military Technology And Law Of War Compliance, Christi Siver

Political Science Faculty Publications

Many states justify their use of technology and tactics as consistent with international law. These appeals to legitimacy suggest that legal norms serve some role in limiting the use of force, particularly in promoting discrimination between combatants and civilians. The United States justifies drone attacks as more efficient means than the use of troops to attack suspected terrorists. Many civilian and military leaders argue that these attacks are more moral than alternative tactics because they target the individuals directly responsible for attacks on the United States and its allies. However, these justifications assume that the military has accurate intelligence. However, …
