A Prescription For Health Care, Alyssa Schlander Jan 1995

A Prescription For Health Care, Alyssa Schlander

Honors Theses, 1963-2015

Too many people do not have access to the health care that they need and deserve. However, no one should have to suffer through and illness because they do not earn enough money to be able to buy health care. it is our responsibility to make sure that our entire community, regardless of their income, has access to these essential human services that our medical community is capable of providing.

With the spiraling costs and constant development of advanced technology in health care, along with the existence of the third-party payment system, our country has created the most costly health …

Catherine Mackinnon And The Pornography Debate, Patrick Larkin Jan 1995

Catherine Mackinnon And The Pornography Debate, Patrick Larkin

Honors Theses, 1963-2015

In 1983, Catherine MacKinnon, introduced a new and innovative legal approach to the proliferating problem of pornography. Citing that the current court standard of judging sexually explicit material, obscenity doctrine, did not adequatley address women's issues, MacKinnon devised a city ordinance that would provide a legal definition of pornography concentrating on women's concerns. Ultimately, the civil ordinance would provide a means for women to present the injurious harms done to them by pornography and to seek a remedy in an open court of law. However, the city ordinance stirred controversy. At question was the ordinance's authority within the confines of …

On The Brink Of Reform? Restructuring The Un Security Council, Christopher Costello Jan 1995

On The Brink Of Reform? Restructuring The Un Security Council, Christopher Costello

Honors Theses, 1963-2015

The United Nations is based on the principle of collective security-- nations banding together to protect each other from aggression, both from within the group of nations and from the outside. However, the standard operating procedures of collective security, as embodied by the UN, is unable to meet the changing needs of the international community. This is due in part to the shift in the global power structure and the Security Council's lack of accurate geo-political representation. If the UN expects to continue its efforts to maintain international peace and security, the Security Council's composition must change.

In the 1990s …

South Africa In Transition: The Influence Of The Political Personalities Of Nelson Mandela And F.W. De Klerk, Aubrey Immelman

Psychology Faculty Publications

The purpose of this paper is to examine salient factors accounting for South Africa’s relatively peaceful transition from apartheid state to nonracial democracy, focusing on the political personalities of South African leaders P.W. Botha, F.W. de Klerk, and Nelson Mandela. Following a brief overview of situational variables, the paper describes the political personalities of Mandela and De Klerk as assessed by the Millon-Type Political Personality Checklist (MPPC). The study shows that one cannot fully account for political developments in South Africa’s transition without considering (a) the interaction between situational variables and the political personalities of Nelson Mandela and F.W. de …

The United States Nonprofit Sector As An Alternative Delivery System, Jennifer Rexroat Jan 1994

The United States Nonprofit Sector As An Alternative Delivery System, Jennifer Rexroat

Honors Theses, 1963-2015

The purpose of this thesis project is the exploration of the nonprofit sector in the United States. In the course of my research, I came to a comprehensive definition of the nonprofit sector, illuminating its foundation, manifestations, and infrastructure in relationship to the whole of the U.S. bureaucracy. I supported my analysis by illustrating the advantage of nonprofit organizations in several areas, asking penetrating questions about their standards of quality, mission, effectiveness, and efficiency. A concentration upon the case study of nonprofit education allowed me not only to discover the inner workings of a nonprofit organization, but it also provided …

Gender Equity In The National Collegiate Athletic Association, Jennifer Nord Jan 1994

Gender Equity In The National Collegiate Athletic Association, Jennifer Nord

Honors Theses, 1963-2015

Medical research has demonstrated that women¹s physical, mental, and social health improves when they participate in athletics. Historically, men have had nearly exclusive control of sports revenues and opportunities. Women are now breaking down the walls to "men¹s only" activities through a heated debate that revolves around the word equality. But, equity with regard to gender means fairness, not necessarily equality. Proponents of gender equity are urging the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), which is the governing body, to take action and prohibit inequitable conditions in college athletics. Men¹s athletics currently receive over 82% of department budgets. Not only is …

Strengthening The Toy Handcuff: The Future Of The War Powers Resolution, Ernest Shriver Jan 1994

Strengthening The Toy Handcuff: The Future Of The War Powers Resolution, Ernest Shriver

Honors Theses, 1963-2015

The Constitution clearly defines the powers that Congress and the President are to share concerning war-making. The President is the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, while the Congress has the power to declare war and raise and support the army and the navy. The President has gradually encroached on Congress' power, however, to the point where war is declared de facto by the President. The War Powers Resolution was passed by Congress in 1973 to attempt to rectify this imbalance. Due to flaws in the Resolution, however, Congress has been unable to force the President¹s compliance and the federal courts …

The United Nations And The Environment: Sinners Or Rainbow Warriors, Kelly Scanlan Jan 1994

The United Nations And The Environment: Sinners Or Rainbow Warriors, Kelly Scanlan

Honors Theses, 1963-2015

Over the past two decades, concern for the environment has greatly increased. As the international community has come to understand the global repercussions of the environmental crisis, the need has grown for improved international cooperation. The United Nations provides a forum for the nations of the world to come together to discuss these issues but lacks the ability to enforce its decisions. In order to understand their role, my thesis goes through a critical analysis of the UN¹s role, looking specifically at the Conference on the Human Environment (UNCHE), the World Commission on Environment and Development (UNCED) and finally at …

Theories Of Revolution: A Latin American Perspective, Mary Bellman Jan 1994

Theories Of Revolution: A Latin American Perspective, Mary Bellman

Honors Theses, 1963-2015

Socialistic revolutions in the twentieth century have not followed the patterns suggested by Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels. However, Marxist analysis remains useful in Latin America as a guide for making and evaluating revolution. Because the class structure of Latin America differs from that of the "First World," the peasantry and proletariat play a larger role in making revolution. In the experiences of Nicaragua and El Salvador, the ideology of the revolutionary organizations evolved in response to the permissive world context. Future revolutionaries can learn many lessons from the contributions (as well as from the errors) of the FSLN and …

South Africa's Long March To Freedom: A Personal View, Aubrey Immelman Jan 1994

South Africa's Long March To Freedom: A Personal View, Aubrey Immelman

Psychology Faculty Publications

In this article I first offer a brief historical account of European white settlement, and ultimately political dominance, in southern Africa. Next, I outline how whites, and in particular Afrikaner-dominated National Party governments after 1948, achieved almost total subjugation of South Africa’s black majority through oppressive legislation and the calculated use of force. In that regard I enumerate some of the draconian laws enacted in the post-1948 apartheid state — laws that served as an impetus for black nationalism, anger, resistance, protest and, after 1960, armed struggle to achieve liberation from white oppression. Against this background, I examine salient factors …

The Assessment Of Political Personality: A Psychodiagnostically Relevant Conceptualization And Methodology, Aubrey Immelman Dec 1993

The Assessment Of Political Personality: A Psychodiagnostically Relevant Conceptualization And Methodology, Aubrey Immelman

Psychology Faculty Publications

The purpose of this article is to narrow the conceptual and methodological gap between existing formulations in psychodiagnostic theory and current practice in political personality. It is suggested that accurate assessment of the personalities of high-level leaders can significantly improve the prediction of political outcomes but that this endeavor has been hampered by inadequate transposition from the source disciplines of personality theory and psychodiagnostics to the target discipline of contemporary political psychology. It is proposed that Theodore Millon’s personological model offers a viable integrative framework for the study of political personality. The present article explicates Millon’s model, specifies the relevance …

A Millon-Based Study Of Political Personality: Nelson Mandela And F. W. De Klerk -- Part I: Method And Preliminary Results, Aubrey Immelman

Psychology Faculty Publications

This paper reports the method and preliminary findings of an investigation of the political personalities of South African president F.W. de Klerk and African National Congress president Nelson Mandela. The purpose of the study was to assess the utility of Theodore Millon’s personological model as an alternative or supplementary conceptual framework and methodology for the assessment of political personality. Conceptually, the investigation was conducted from the perspective of a model of personality compatible with Axis II of DSM-III-R, which serves as an important psychodiagnostic frame of reference for the practice of contemporary psychiatry and clinical psychology. Methodologically, the investigation involved …

A Mission For Peace: United Nations Peacekeeping In The New World Order, John Butler Jan 1993

A Mission For Peace: United Nations Peacekeeping In The New World Order, John Butler

Honors Theses, 1963-2015

The last decade of the twentieth century has been witness to remarkable changes in geopolitics amongst the world's nations. International relations has emerged from the icy winters of the Cold-War era, and has moved toward a more hopeful "world order." However, with the change comes new challenges--crises of a different nature which demand new solutions. Thus, many feel that it is the job of international organizations--particularly the United Nations--to formulate these solutions. Specifically, this thesis poses the following question: what is the role of the United Nations peacekeeping operations within this "new world order"?

Development Of The Brazilian Rainforest, Antony Dispanet Jan 1993

Development Of The Brazilian Rainforest, Antony Dispanet

Honors Theses, 1963-2015

There has recently been great attention paid to the destruction of the Brazilian rainforest. The destruction has been fueled by improper economic and development practices, suggesting that it is a soluble environmental problem. In the thesis, which has an optimistic tone, I discuss what has been destroyed so far, what policies led to the destruction of the rainforests, the forces on different sides, what is being lost through continued deforestation, and what alternatives should be pursued to halt deforestation and eliminate some of the economic conflicts in Brazil.

The Future Political Status Of Puerto Rico, Sean Murray Jan 1993

The Future Political Status Of Puerto Rico, Sean Murray

Honors Theses, 1963-2015

This thesis is an analysis of current events regarding the future political status of Puerto Rico. It examines the various actors in Puerto Rico and in the United States congress, as well as international and United Nations positions. Ultimately, the paper assesses the possibility of determining the permanent political status of Puerto Rico and the indecision on the part of the United States Congress, concluding that a permanent decision is unlikely before the end of the 20th century.

The Requirements Of Citizenship In A Modern Democracy, Joseph Stahl Jan 1992

The Requirements Of Citizenship In A Modern Democracy, Joseph Stahl

Honors Theses, 1963-2015

Our current understanding of citizenship is grounded in our culture of individualism and results in a flawed conception of the good citizen in a liberal democratic state. The culture of individualism presents a flawed view of the person, fails to recognize our interconnections and common problems, encourages only adversarial democracy, alters the nature of our democracy and fails to recognize the potentials of common action. For these reasons the culture of individualism destroys meaningful citizenship as it alienates us from one another and prevents us from recognizing a limited common good --the protection and enhancement of each individual's life opportunities. …
