The Effects Of U.S. Legislation On Acts Of Terrorism Against Americans Abroad, James Myles Casey

Historically, acts of international terrorism against Americans, even acts that have been conducted outside the territorial jurisdiction of the United States, have been handled with a diplomatic, intelligence and/or military response. In 1985, the United States began using a law enforcement or prosecutive model of responding to such acts of international terrorism. In this study, a review of the recent criminal and civil legislation against international terrorism was conducted. Further, a quantitative analysis of Americans killed overseas in acts of international terrorism, both prior to and after the initiation of U.S. legislation, was conducted in an attempt to discern if …

This paper analyzes the role played by moderate Islamic groups in modem Egypt and tries to make a distinction between moderate, middle-of-the road groups and radical, extremist ones. There are several questions regarding the topic analyzed in this thesis. Is Islam inherently incompatible with the Western democratic values? Is there a difference between moderate and radical Islamic movements? Is the Muslim Brotherhood promoting an Islamic democracy and would that stabilize and improve the tormented Egyptian society? [Excerpt] "The World Bank’s new book, A Case for Aid: Building a Consensus for Development Assistance, indicates how dramatic and lasting the progress against global poverty has been in the past 50 years. It also shows how dramatically the Bank’s own understanding has risen, even in the past decade, of how to make its efforts more effective in relieving poverty and achieving other development goals. These two themes form the basis for the World Bank’s visionary thesis: that eradicating much of the poverty, ill health, and illiteracy around the world is within reach.

Japan-US relations, which had been drifting in the late 1990s, were given a new lease of life by the new administrations of US President George W. Bush and Japanese Prime Minister Koizumi Junichiro, both of whom argued for strengthening the alliance. This paper argues that, although the new sense of cooperation extended through to beyond the September 11th events, the US designation of an ‘axis of evil’ has paradoxically caused some divergence in the relationship.
