The authors propose that families facing childhood cancer inadvertently become part of a distinct cultural group. To better train clinicians working with these families, this study was conducted as a phenomenological exploration of the common experiences of those who work with, and participate in, this "culture of cancer" (i.e., members of a pediatric oncology treatment team that includes medical family therapists). Two primary themes emerged from the data: culture of change and relationships. A qualitative description of medical family therapists as part of the treatment team was also developed. Insight into this culture and recommendations for family therapists working in …

Recruitment And Retention Of Personnel Directing Rural Libraries: A Review Of Literature In Preparation Of A Study For Idaho, Thomas Ivie

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

“There is an assumption that the public library is predominantly an urban institution, and while that depends on how the words ‘urban' and ‘rural' are defined” (Sager, p. 5), the statistics reveal that the majority of public libraries tend to exist in towns or population centers of under 25,000 (Vavrek, May 1983, p. 966). Whether or not one agrees with the projection that “…most public libraries, even the smallest, will be led by professional managers” (Kirwin, p. 7), the library and information science profession needs to increase its knowledge about those among its ranks who manage the majority of the …

Montenegro: Vassal Or Sovereign?, Octavian Sofansky, Stephen R. Bowers, Marion T. Doss, Jr.

The authors conclude that Montenegro could be the key for Balkan peace. Relieved of its Yugoslav appendix, Serbia might finally focus inward on the pressing economic problems and opt for democratization and cooperation with the international community. However, it might also be that Montenegro is a trigger for a new protracted civil war, a new Vietnam, which will immerse the future of Balkan people in uncertainty.

Center for Social Development Research

Social development refers to the integration of improvements in human welfare with economic development and widespread participation in the process and benefits of development. While the notion of social development provides a useful complement to economic-oriented development, it has been criticized as utopian, wide-ranging, and theoretically underdeveloped. After summarizing major conceptualizations of social development, this paper focuses on a particular social development issue -- investment in human development. Specifically, investment in human development refers to investments in basic needs such as nutrition, primary health care, and basic housing; and investments in human capital in the form of primary education and …

The Merchant Of Venice: Schools, Libraries, And Censors, David C. Kupfer Jan 2009

The Merchant Of Venice: Schools, Libraries, And Censors, David C. Kupfer

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

For nearly a century, teaching Shakespeare'sThe Merchant of Venice in schools has been questioned, because of perceived religious prejudice . Defenders of Shakespeare are encouraged to fight censorship with a constitutional right to read. Definers of literature are left out when a defense of the play is required. Both potential censor and concerned parent could better observe reasons to protect the play through explanations of its merits presented alongside legal discourse. The school librarian will defend controversial classics more effectively if legal and literary judgments are used together to answer the wrath of the censors.

Identification Of Transnational Threats, Stephen R. Bowers, Stephen M. Parke

Faculty Publications and Presentations

In the past, the starting point for threat identification was the nation state. Today, national boundaries have lost much of their significance and global forces lacking identifiable national frontiers represent a real threat to US security.

New technologies have facilitated the development of advanced terrorist methodologies and tactics.

A new and increasingly significant threat is hostile forces which operate within the borders of states which are friendly to the United States.

American universities are increasingly vulnerable to new transnational threats by virtue of the opportunities they present for acquisition of dual use technological skills.

With its new cellular structure, terrorism …

Gambling Awareness For Youth: An Analysis Of The "Don't Gamble Away Our Future" Program, Lisa M. Taylor

Faculty Research & Creative Activity until 2018 (FCS)

Gambling has become increasingly popular among minors and is easily accessible to them. This is alarming since research has indicated that minors are more susceptible to gambling pathology than adults. Additionally, gambling has devastating effects on minors that gamble as well as their families and communities. The Illinois Institute for Addiction Recovery (IIAR) developed a gambling awareness prevention program called “Don’t Gamble Away our Future™” to educate minors about gambling and the dangers associated with it. The IIAR started collecting data for the purpose of evaluation in 2005. The purpose of the current study was to evaluate the program’s effectiveness …

Intervention Implementation Integrity Within Conjoint Behavioral Consultation: Strategies For Working With Families, Michelle S. Swanger-Gagne, Andrew Garbacz, Susan M. Sheridan

Nebraska Center for Research on Children, Youth, Families, and Schools: Faculty Publications

Mental health services in school systems can take many forms. Behavioral consultation is one efficacious and commonly used form of indirect service delivery. Indirect service delivery models are unique in that an intermediate person, the consultee, provides treatment directly to a client. The effectiveness of the intervention depends in large part on the degree to which the consultee implements the intervention as designed. Families of children at-risk for school failure may experience challenges implementing an intervention developed through a consultation model. Some researchers have noted that the implementation of treatment plans is influenced by “events in the real world” including …

Can Non-State Certification Systems Bolster State-Centered Efforts To Promote Sustainable Development Through The Clean Development Mechanism, Jonathan G.S. Koppell, Kelly Levin, Benjamin Cashore Jan 2009

Can Non-State Certification Systems Bolster State-Centered Efforts To Promote Sustainable Development Through The Clean Development Mechanism, Jonathan G.S. Koppell, Kelly Levin, Benjamin Cashore

Publications from President Jonathan G.S. Koppell

Increasing economic globalization has coincided with the emergence and escalating influence of non-state actors and organizations in domestic and international policymaking, from shaping policy agendas to promoting private authority. The latter phenomenon has arisen, at least in part, from a critique of states' failures to adopt effective and enduring environmental policies. Rather than contest "command and control" institutions, non-state strategies embrace market approaches built around incentives and price mechanisms. Several forms of non-state authority have emerged, including corporate social responsibility, provision of information through labeling, and self-reporting.
