The Implications Of Attachment Orientation And Personality Pathology For Detecting Deception, Madeline Luedke
The Implications Of Attachment Orientation And Personality Pathology For Detecting Deception, Madeline Luedke
Global Tides
This study investigated the implications of attachment orientations and personality dimensions for accuracy in detecting deception from emotionally-based statements. Thirty individuals (M age = 25.33, range = 18-52) completed a survey that included the Personality Inventory for DSM-V-Brief Form and the Relationship Styles Questionnaire to measure the individual differences in question. To measure deceit, 7 mental health counselors volunteered to participate in a video-recorded mock interview concerning their current romantic partner—3 individuals provided false responses, and the remaining 4 offered true answers. The audio-visual vignettes were imbedded in the survey and subjects viewed each, then responded a question asking …
Parental Cultural Conflict And Children's Cultural Identity Development, Amanda Araki
Parental Cultural Conflict And Children's Cultural Identity Development, Amanda Araki
Student Research Posters
Parent culturally incompatibility was evaluated for its possible negative impact on a bicultural offspring’s cultural identity development. The 43 self-identified bicultural participants, aged from 18 to 67 years, provided family cultural histories, and completed the Parental Cultural Conflict Scale (PCCS) and the Multigroup Ethnic Identity Measure (MEIM). The hypothesized relationship between high PCCS levels and low MEIM levels was not supported by the data; however, the range of responses on the PCCS was very limited with a complete absence of any very low or very high conflict scores. It was concluded that parents’ cultural incompatibility does not have the level …
The Social Behavior Of Rehabilitated Spider Monkeys (Ateles Geoffroyi), Anthony Denice
The Social Behavior Of Rehabilitated Spider Monkeys (Ateles Geoffroyi), Anthony Denice
All Master's Theses
The welfare of captive primates in laboratories, sanctuaries, and zoos is affected by various aspects of their environments. Although space restrictions increase aggression and stress-related behaviors in most captive animals, primates show diverse mechanisms for displacing stress and mitigating conflict. Many primates, including wild spider monkeys (genus Ateles), use these mechanisms flexibly to cope with social and environmental stressors. I investigated whether or not captive black-handed spider monkeys (Ateles geoffroyi) use behavioral strategies to cope with potential stressors in captivity. In particular, I tested whether an affiliative or avoidant strategy was used in response to changes in …
Examining Perceptions Of Crime And Disorder In A Rural University Setting, Ana C. Alcala
Examining Perceptions Of Crime And Disorder In A Rural University Setting, Ana C. Alcala
All Master's Theses
The present study responds to the gap in our understanding of perceptions of crime and disorder in younger age groups, and in a rural setting. A survey was administered to collected students’ perception of crime and disorder on campus, of those surveys 655 students responded. A factor analysis using a varimax rotation was used to group similar variables into latent variables. Three factors emerged: (1) general perception of crime and disorder, (2) traffic congestion, and (3) alcohol and drug abuse. Various analytical techniques were also used, such as OLS (ordinary least squares) regression, difference of means, and analysis of variance …
Enrichment Use & Social Interactions In A Mixed-Species Enclosure Of Sumatran (Pongo Abelij) & Bornean Orangutans (P. Pygmaeus) & Northern White-Cheeked Gibbons (Nomascus Leucogenys), Emily Veitia
All Master's Theses
Enrichment is an aspect of captive husbandry that has been shown to positively impact animals’ well-being and can be designed to encourage species-typical behaviors, such as foraging and arboreality. Enrichment can include housing together multiple compatible species. Orangutans are sympatric with siamangs and agile and Bornean gibbons, so several zoos house these four Asian ape species in the same enclosure, in part, as social enrichment. In my study, I observed enrichment use and social interactions in a mixed-species enclosure at the Oregon Zoo, which housed two Sumatran (Pongo abelii) and two Bornean (P. pygmaeus) orangutans with …
Exploring The Experiences Of Young Adult Rock Musicians Through An Occupational Lens, Brooke E. King
Exploring The Experiences Of Young Adult Rock Musicians Through An Occupational Lens, Brooke E. King
Online Theses and Dissertations
This qualitative study examined the occupational experiences of young adult rock musicians using first-hand accounts solicited through semi-structured interviews. Participants included 9 male rock musicians ages 19 to 35 who actively participated in an income-generating rock band. A grounded theory approach was used for data analysis and interpretation. Participation in a rock band was conceptualized as a dynamic process between identifying as a musician, facing challenges, and meeting challenges, which either led musicians to persevere or discontinue engagement in the band. Results challenge typical stereotypes associated with rock band participation and contribute to understanding the connection between occupational engagement and …

Learning And Working Together: Invoking Systems’ Change Through Inter-Organizational Collaborative Principles And A Learning Community Framework, Brandon Hey
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
Local communities face significant challenges such as increased inequality, immigration, and global climate change. In order to address these challenges whole cities have to innovate and learn together. In this thesis, I introduce the Learning Community (LC) model, a new way of collaborating and creating collective impact that emphasizes learning, alongside collective impact, as a central strategy to addressing complex social challenges. In a LC, members value the continuous pursuit of knowledge, feedback, and experimentation as well as the flow of information and resources between academic institutions and practice groups. The value of learning is built into key structures …
Telemedicine For The American Indian/Alaska Native Population, Janine M. Good
Telemedicine For The American Indian/Alaska Native Population, Janine M. Good
Senior Honors Theses
When compared to other Americans’ health, a worse health status is seen among the American Indian and Alaska Native population. American Indians and Alaska Natives are faced with numerous disparities in healthcare, such as decreased access to healthcare. Additionally, healthcare data about this group are missing. Although health beliefs and traditions can differ among tribes, there are also similarities. Telemedicine is the use of technology (i.e., phone, videoconferencing) to deliver healthcare. This healthcare service may be beneficial for this population’s healthcare needs because of telemedicine’s possible advantages. Although telemedicine also has disadvantages, a knowledge of and respect for American Indian …

Book Review: Social Policy And Social Change: Toward The Creation Of Social And Economic Justice, Jan Vinita White
Journal of Sustainable Social Impact
Although the book title, Social Policy and Social Change: Toward the Creation of Social and Economic Justice, suggests social change, the focus of the book is social justice, particularly in social work policy and practice. In this second edition of Jimenez, Mayers Pasztor, Chambers, and Pearlman Fujii's seminal exploration, issues of inequality and the widening gap between the wealthy and poor, health care disparities, discrimination, and developing issues are investigated and analyzed in a reader-friendly format.
Informal Partnerships Between Nonprofits And Local Governments And The Role Of Trust, Scott Pozil, Anne Hacker
Informal Partnerships Between Nonprofits And Local Governments And The Role Of Trust, Scott Pozil, Anne Hacker
Journal of Sustainable Social Impact
Informal partnerships between nonprofit organizations (NPOs) and local governments represent a winning combination for affective positive social change in communities. These partnerships thrive on the development and sustainment of trust as a guiding force between NPO executives and their local government counterparts. Qualitative case study research reveals such an assertion to be true, based on interviews and document reviews of informal partnerships in a metropolitan area in the Northwest United States. The implications for social change include establishing successful models of informal partnerships between NPOs and local governments that impact the social and economic well-being of communities.
All-Lands Management: Convening Communities And Their Lands Around Fire Management, Jodie T. Pixley
All-Lands Management: Convening Communities And Their Lands Around Fire Management, Jodie T. Pixley
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
Broadly defined, All-lands Management (ALM) is a land management approach involving collaborative, science-based ecosystem restoration at the landscape scale, across ownership and jurisdictional boundaries. My research investigates collaborative groups working to reduce wildfire risk by applying ALM. Fire risk in the Pacific West (California and Oregon) is increasing in severity and extent due to fire suppression and is exacerbated by the effects of drought, climate change, and expanding residential development. For decades federal, state, and local entities have expressed the need to work collaboratively, across boundaries and ownerships to reintroduce fire back onto the landscape to restore forest resiliency. This …
Investigating Individual Pathways To Recovery, Mackenzie R. Mcbride
Investigating Individual Pathways To Recovery, Mackenzie R. Mcbride
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Drug use is most prevalent among young adults between ages 18 and 24; this is just one factor that contributes to the high rates of substance use on college campuses. Collegiate recovery programs (CRPs) have been growing in number, awakening the “youth in recovery” movement. This paper presents literature on various tools and elements of recovery, with a focus on CRPs and their significance. This study aims to fill the knowledge gap by examining individual pathways to recovery and learning about the characteristics of students participating in CRPs, including their life events and decisions to seek treatment. Semi-structured interviews were …

Research outputs 2014 to 2021
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to explore the idea that, in the last few decades, collaborative inquiry methods have evolved along a similar trajectory to dual lens research. Dual lens research, known in various contexts as both ways, two-eyed seeing Old Ways New Ways, and Koodjal Jinnung (looking both ways), is designed to generate new knowledge by exploring a theme through Aboriginal and contemporary western lenses. Participatory action research and a dual lens approach are considered in a number of projects with a particular focus on the issues such work can raise including conceptual challenges posed by fundamental …

Center for Social Development Research
This brief uses administrative income tax data coupled with survey responses from roughly 5,000 households living near the poverty line to estimate how access to the Affordable Care Act’s health insurance Marketplaces have affected households’ experiences of extreme illiquidity, which is measured by delinquencies on home payments. To estimate this relationship, we exploit a natural experiment underway in states that did not expand Medicaid and created by the eligibility rules for Marketplace subsidies. Results suggest that insured households living near the poverty line are better able to make timely rent and mortgage payments compared with similar, uninsured households. Given housing …

Flipping The Counseling Classroom To Enhance Application-Based Learning Activities, Clare Merlin
Journal of Counselor Preparation and Supervision
Flipped learning is an instructional approach that employs asynchronous video lectures as homework and active, group-based activities in the classroom (Bishop, 2013). During the past decade, this teaching approach has increased in popularity among K-12 teachers and higher education instructors. Though one model of flipped learning is traditionally described in the literature, several models exist and are detailed in this article. Flipped learning is particularly beneficial to counselor education as it can help increase available class time for practicing counseling skills, engaging in application-based activities, and participating in class discussions. Four specific CACREP core curricular areas are addressed: Helping Relationships, …

ABSTRACT
In aviators, stress coping has been linked to flying performance and has a bearing on flight safety and mission effectiveness. The objective of this research was to study coping strategies utilized by Indian military pilots. A sample of 160 military pilots was asked to complete a demographic data sheet and the Stress Coping Checklist. Preliminary findings suggest that, Indian pilots use flexible problem and emotion focussed coping strategies.
