Methods: Observations of third grade classrooms, key informant interviews with third grade teachers and community observations were conducted at the Achieve Academy School while throughout the school day.
Results: Findings showed that students would benefit from the implementation of On-The-Spot Mindfulness Based Techniques and Practices by minimizing stress, increasing academic success and improving the overall behavior, …
Developing A Peer Cancer Support Group Evaluation, Glenda Kith
Developing A Peer Cancer Support Group Evaluation, Glenda Kith
Master's Projects and Capstones
Introduction: For many years, health care organizations have offered peer cancer support groups to cancer survivors, but peer cancer support group evaluation is not standardized. Without a clear and consistent evaluation, it may be difficult to understand the efficacy of and gain support for peer cancer support groups. In this paper, I discuss how an evaluation was created for a peer cancer support group called Cancer Awareness Resource and Education (CARE).
Methods: In-depth interviews with CARE participants were conducted and pre-survey and a post-survey were developed. The in-depth interviews included a convenience sample of eight individuals, two individuals from the …

This paper evaluates the effectiveness of a train the teacher manual for the child safety lessons.
Methods. A five question tool was developed to survey Kindergarten through 5th grade teachers working at elementary schools in the San Francisco Unified School District. The questions were designed to better understand the needs of the population before creating a resource for them …
Facilitating The Transition From Military Instructor To Academic Educator: Cognitive Apprenticeship In Teacher Induction At The United States Air Force Academy, Thomas T. Swaim
The Qualitative Report
This article examines teacher induction in the military undergraduate education context. The U.S. Air Force Academy relies on approximately 520 military and civilian instructors to educate nearly 4000 future military officers each year. These educators must be highly skilled and unquestionably capable in their abilities to teach these future leaders. Many of these instructors derive from highly technical active duty operational career fields (such as pilot, missile operator, etc.). This article reveals how Collins’, Brown’s, and Newman’s (1989) theory of cognitive apprenticeship is manifested within teacher induction experiences at the U.S. Air Force Academy. Using a qualitative multiple-case study approach, …

The results reported here come from analyses of data on 339 adult program participants from Head Start families, 107 Head Start staff who participated in the program, and administrators and staff implementing the program at Head Start …
Evaluation Framework For Effective Hiv/Public Health Programming In Nigeria, Saheed Ottun
Evaluation Framework For Effective Hiv/Public Health Programming In Nigeria, Saheed Ottun
Capstone Collection
Evaluation is a buzzword in the field of development. How can one ensure the incorporation of effective monitoring and assessment framework in HIV/AIDS and public health programming that will impact positively on the reproductive health of young adults in Nigeria? In most public corporations in Nigeria, there is hardly any conscious effort on the part of the government to conduct either process evaluation or impact assessment on various government projects and policy, especially on HIV/public health programming. This course-linked capstone thematically illustrated the current state of the problem by providing in-depth analysis of the degree of HIV impact on the …
Implementing For Success And Sustainability, Michele Paulo
Implementing For Success And Sustainability, Michele Paulo
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects
Nurses, including those with additional education and training as professional development specialists, face challenges to implementing evidenced-based practice changes effectively and efficiently. Nurse bedside performance can drift away from evidence-based practice (EBP) and revert to methods previously taught when the strategy, planning and implementation lacks resources to support sustainable change. While knowledge and skills attainment are important, they do not ensure the successful transition in practice change at the point of care. An intervention has been developed that integrates several evidence-based implementation concepts and frameworks into a single framework named the Identify and DRIVE framework. Additionally, the Identify and DRIVE …
Promoting Resilience Amongst Young People Transitioning From Care To Independent Living: Experiences Of Residential Social Care Workers, Linda Cameron, Anne Hynes, Yvonne Maycock, Eileen O'Neill, Ann Marie O'Reilly
Promoting Resilience Amongst Young People Transitioning From Care To Independent Living: Experiences Of Residential Social Care Workers, Linda Cameron, Anne Hynes, Yvonne Maycock, Eileen O'Neill, Ann Marie O'Reilly
Journal of Social Care
The capacity for a young adult to develop and overcome obstacles in life underpins the concept of resilience building (Gilligan, 1997). A key role of the social care worker is to ensure that young adults growing up in the care system are afforded the best possible outcomes. This includes social care workers helping young people build their resilience in preparation for the transition into independent living and aftercare. The research reported here examines the experiences and perspectives of two residential social care workers regarding the promotion of resilience amongst young people transitioning from residential care to independent living. From analysis …

The Key Attributes Of A Successful Relationship With Service Users In Family Support: Views Of Family Support Workers, Kim Corless, Sharon Horan, Barbara Kirkpatrick, Nicola Crocker, Maura O'Donoghue, Veronika Steiner
Journal of Social Care
Existing research on family support suggests that key to the family’s engagement and satisfaction is the family’s perception of the quality of the relationship established with their assigned support worker (McArthur & Thompson, 2011; Mason, 2012). The research reported here explores the views of the other partner in this relationship, the family support worker. Two experienced family support workers were interviewed about their views of what where the key attributes of a successful relationship with the families they worked with. The data was thematically analysed and three themes identified. There were overcoming barriers; skills needed to build a successful working …

Supports For Parents Of Children With An Intellectual Disability: The Social Care Worker’S View, Christine Barretto, Catherine Byrne, Mairead Delaney, Aine Harrington, Kira Kazokova
Journal of Social Care
The aim of this research was to explore how social care workers view their role in providing support to parents of children or adults with an Intellectual Disability. The data was collected using semi-structured individual interviews with two practising Social Care Workers with experience working in Intellectual Disability Services, who were part of the research team. It was found that Social Care Workers view themselves as having a role in supporting parents with a child or adult with ID, even where the primary service user engaged with their organisation, was the child or adult with ID. However, while this was …
Non-Resident Fathers: A Literature Review Of Factors Influencing Their World, David Whyte
Non-Resident Fathers: A Literature Review Of Factors Influencing Their World, David Whyte
Journal of Social Care
It has been acknowledged (McCashin, 1996; Hogan & Gilbertson, 2007) that services designed to support families tend to focus on the mother and children and little contact is generally made with fathers, even when they are resident in the family home. Considering the changes in family structure in contemporary society and the often complex range of needs held by families who avail of social care services, this paper provides some insights in the factors that impact on non-resident fathers. The paper presents a literature review on the topic of non-resident fathers covering areas such as fathers’ role in the family …
Researching Effective Programmes And Ways Of Engaging Young People In A Youth Work Setting, Marie Holton
Researching Effective Programmes And Ways Of Engaging Young People In A Youth Work Setting, Marie Holton
Journal of Social Care
Youth work in contemporary Ireland is undergoing many changes. The introduction of the National Quality Standards Framework (2010) has seen a shift from process orientated work to outcomes based models. There are several ongoing debates in the current economic climate which sees the need to satisfy the funding agencies, whilst upholding the core values and principles of youth work. Youth work seems to be divided between ‘mainstream’ which is open access to all young people, (this type of youth work is generally found in the voluntary sector), and ‘targeted’ youth work, (which is funded by government initiatives) to tackle disadvantage …
The Role Of Self-Awareness And Reflection In Social Care Practice, Aoife Greene
The Role Of Self-Awareness And Reflection In Social Care Practice, Aoife Greene
Journal of Social Care
This study examined social care workers’ understanding of self-awareness and reflection, the impact of reflection on their practice, and the factors which support and/or impede reflection in their practice. Given the limited evidence base in general on the use of reflection in social care practice, this qualitative study contributes to the existing body of knowledge by exploring the role of self-awareness and reflection in social care practice among a small group of social care practitioners in Ireland. The study included interviews with seven social care workers who were pursuing a postgraduate qualification in social care practice. The main findings indicate …

The Impact Of Intergenerational Projects On The Younger Person's View Of Older People, Ian Mcnamara
Journal of Social Care
Intergenerational projects and activities have become popular among both youth and senior citizen groups across Ireland. These programmes fill a variety of personal and societal needs as our society becomes increasingly age-segregated. This study examined the impact of intergenerational projects on a group of six girls aged 15 to 16 living in the west of Ireland. It explores preconceptions and changes in views towards older people, as well as personal impacts. All participants were members of a local youth group and had taken part in two intergenerational projects at a local nursing home. The first project involved working with residents …

Statewide Child Development Account Policies: Key Design Elements, Margaret M. Clancy, Sondra G. Beverly
Center for Social Development Research
Child Development Accounts (CDAs) aim to build assets for postsecondary education. Unlike many asset-building programs, CDAs were explicitly conceived to be universal (every child is included) and progressive (greater support for disadvantaged children). Four states have created statewide CDAs—Baby Scholars in Connecticut, the Harold Alfond College Challenge in Maine, College Kick Start in Nevada, and CollegeBoundbaby in Rhode Island. In this policy report, we describe these CDAs to provide perspective and inform new initiatives. We begin by identifying 10 key CDA policy design elements originally modeled by the CDA in the SEED for Oklahoma Kids experiment. By modeling key design …

Depressive Symptoms In Mexican-Origin Adolescents: Interrelations Between School And Family Contexts, Prerna G. Arora, Lorey Wheeler
Nebraska Center for Research on Children, Youth, Families, and Schools: Faculty Publications
This study, as guided by cultural-ecological frameworks, examined multiple contextual stressors, including subjective economic hardship, acculturation, discrimination, and negative perceptions of school safety, as simultaneously linked to adolescents’ depressive symptoms, as well as the role of gender, familism values, family cohesion, and school connectedness on these associations. Data come from the Children of Immigrants Longitudinal Study (Portes and Rumbaut 2012) that included second-generation 8th- and 9th-grade children of foreign-born parents from the Mexican-origin subsample (n = 755; 52% male; time 1 M age = 14.20 years). Adolescents were either born in (60%) or immigrated prior to age 5 to …
College Student Debt And Anticipated Repayment Difficulty, Jonathan J. Fox, Suzanne Bartholomae, Jodi C. Letkiewicz, Catherine P. Montalto
College Student Debt And Anticipated Repayment Difficulty, Jonathan J. Fox, Suzanne Bartholomae, Jodi C. Letkiewicz, Catherine P. Montalto
Journal of Student Financial Aid
This study analyzes factors associated with anticipated difficulty with repayment of debt accumulated during college using a basic model of credit risk that includes socialization processes influencing college student financial decisions. The empirical analysis uses data from the 2010 Ohio Student Financial Wellness Study. Results provide evidence of male overconfidence in financial decision making, as males are less likely than females to predict repayment difficulties. Socialization process variables, including financial management practices, financial parenting communication, and expected economic returns from education, are strongly associated with anticipated debt repayment difficulty. Inclusion of these process variables in the model results in loss …

Hypermasculine, Antifeminine: The Role Of Masculine Identity In Relational Aggression Among Gay Men, Daniel Locke Deason
Hypermasculine, Antifeminine: The Role Of Masculine Identity In Relational Aggression Among Gay Men, Daniel Locke Deason
Dissertations
Relational aggression is a form of aggression that targets a victim’s relationships or sense of inclusion. Depression, social ostracism, anxiety, and poor psychological adjustment are some of the negative correlates that have been identified in child and adolescent victims of relational aggression. For older adolescents and emerging adults, similar negative correlates have been found. Despite the efforts to identify these correlates, little research has been conducted on relational aggression among minority groups. The present study addressed relational aggression among college-aged gay-identifying men through the lens of Exclusively Masculine Identity Theory (EMIT), which was developed to account for anti-gay attitudes among …
Support With Fathering An Adolescent Daughter: A Heuristic Investigation Of Men's Experiences With A Targeted Fathering Intervention, Jeffrey Boatner
Support With Fathering An Adolescent Daughter: A Heuristic Investigation Of Men's Experiences With A Targeted Fathering Intervention, Jeffrey Boatner
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
This heuristic study explored and described the experiences of fathers who participated in an intervention designed to promote and improve their relationships with their adolescent daughter(s). Despite increasing interest in the distinct contribution that fathers make to the development and well-being of their children, the father-daughter relationship remains the least studied and least understood of all parent-child pairings. Paternal involvement is a powerfully protective influence for girls—particularly as girls enter into adolescence and prepare for adulthood—yet there remain few interventions that are specifically designed to support fathers at this critical time. This study examined the experiences of 11 fathers who …

Using insights from employers and employees to generate evidence on employee financial wellness programs (EFWPs), this research report illustrates findings from a mixed-methods study assessing the potential of these programs to increase the financial stability of American workers. The research team surveyed employers that offered or were interested in offering an EFWP and subsequently conducted in-depth interviews with a subsample of those employers to acquire a greater understanding of survey responses. Further, the research team conducted intensive case studies, examining the relationship between EFWP providers and their clients as well as the dynamics of program delivery. These case studies benefitted …

Perceived Conflict Styles Of Adult Children And Their Parents: What Is The Connection?, Dean M. Busby, Lena Hsin-Yao Chiu
Perceived Conflict Styles Of Adult Children And Their Parents: What Is The Connection?, Dean M. Busby, Lena Hsin-Yao Chiu
Faculty Publications
The purpose of this study was to explore the potential genesis of conflict styles for couples by evaluating the association between parents’ conflict styles and those of their adult children and their adult children’s partners. Using Social Learning Theory as a theoretical foundation, the four conflict typologies from Gottman’s work (avoidant, validating, volatile, and hostile) were applied to study the participants’ conflict styles. Multinomial logistic regression was then conducted on a sample of 25,511 participants, testing the relationships between the conflict styles of parents, their adult children’s conflict styles, and their adult children’s partners’ conflict styles. All of the perceived …
The Adaptive Value Of Complex Socio-Communicative Behavior, Sara A. Skiba
The Adaptive Value Of Complex Socio-Communicative Behavior, Sara A. Skiba
Master of Science in Integrative Biology Theses
Human spoken language represents the most elaborate communication system, however the selection pressures leading to its emergence are still uncertain. Unlike humans, bonobos and chimpanzees do not have language. However, bonobos may have been subjected to similar selection pressures as early hominins, subsequent to their phylogenetic split from chimpanzees roughly 1.5 million years ago. The current study investigated the similarities and differences in sociality and communicative production between bonobos and chimpanzees in captive settings, using 9, 10-minute focal follows for each individual. Analyses revealed a significant positive correlation between social proximity score and total communicative signals produced, as well as …

This study examined differences between college students with and without disabilities who utilized college counseling center services. Although we found no differences between students with (n = 234, 9.2%) and without (n = 2,308, 90.8%) disabilities on number of counseling sessions attended, significant findings included: students with disabilities were more likely to self-terminate and more likely to be referred out than students without disabilities. Results suggest that students with disabilities are a diverse group requiring special consideration in college counseling settings. Recommendations for college counseling practice are discussed.

Recruiting Undergraduate Students: Creating A Path To The Counseling Profession, Jake J. Protivnak, Jennifer F. Yensel
Recruiting Undergraduate Students: Creating A Path To The Counseling Profession, Jake J. Protivnak, Jennifer F. Yensel
Journal of Counselor Preparation and Supervision
Counselor educators must find ways to encourage undergraduate students to choose to pursue a graduate degree in counseling. Related helping professions (e.g., psychology, social work) may have a recruitment advantage. Faculty in disciplines with both undergraduate and graduate programs can encourage high achieving undergraduate students to continue into graduate programs within their discipline. Due to the lack of a discipline specific academic pathway and an undergraduate advising system directing students into counseling graduate programs, counselor educators must find innovative ways to recruit undergraduate students. The authors will discuss the issues involved in recruiting undergraduate students, present a framework for sharing …
