Leadership And The Social Imperative Of Organizations In The 21st Century, Gill Robinson Hickman Jan 1998

Leadership And The Social Imperative Of Organizations In The 21st Century, Gill Robinson Hickman

Jepson School of Leadership Studies articles, book chapters and other publications

Much of our writing and dialogue as leadership scholars consists of exchanges about "good" leadership -- what leadership ought to be as opposed to what it really is, as Barbara Kellerman so accurately observes. Although I strongly believe that leadership scholars should do both, I intend to provide a normative perspective for organization leadership in the context of turbulent environments. The new era in which organizations must function is characterized by factors such as intense global concern and competition; intraorganizational relationships and collaboration; a focus on democracy, substantive justice, civic virtues, and the common good; values orientation; empowerment and trust; …

After The Third Sector: Emerging And Disappearing Commons, Roger A. Lohmann

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

The third sector is currently the most popular categorical label as a summary term for capturing the activities of a highly diverse set of tax-exempt corporations and nonprofit organizations. I draw a sharper-than-usual distinction here between a third sector composed of a million or more social entrepreneurial nonprofit firms and and the voluntary associations, clubs, groups and diverse uncountable volunteer and philanthropic efforts, projects, causes, which I label as commons and which have in recent years been increasingly subsumed under the general heading of civil society. Characteristics Of Temperament And Ego Development As Revealed In Responses To Ethical Issues In Business, Judy A. Gareis

MALS Final Projects, 1995-2019

Perceived similarities between Keirsey's Temperament Theory and Loevinger's Ego Development Stages sparked an interest in the exploration of how temperament and ego development characteristics might be manifested in employee perception of ethical business issues. The study involved analysis of case study responses from 25 participants from two organizations. Data was examined in responses from those in leadership positions and those not; by ego development level; and by temperament. Predictions about the appearance of temperament and ego development characteristics were largely confirmed and a model for prediction of employee responses to ethical business issues based on temperament was developed based on …

The Politics Of Aging And Rural Social Services: An Exploratory Analysis, Roger A. Lohmann Aug 1978

The Politics Of Aging And Rural Social Services: An Exploratory Analysis, Roger A. Lohmann

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

The advent of federal funding for rural social services during the late 1960s and 1970s brought about changes in the political organization of rural America. A host of new organizational actors, like Area Agencies on Aging and various local aging agencies were created in rural communities across the country, in the wake of Baker v. Carr with its “one man/one vote” principle and funding through programs like the Economic Opportunity Act and the Older Americans Act. This article details a leadership succession model suggesting that local leadership of aging interests went through at least four distinct phases during this time: …
