The Interplay Of Morphology, Syntax, And Semantics In Kuria Verb Extensions Within The Mara Region, Mary Charwi

Verb extension morphological affixes that significantly alter verb meaning are a defining characteristic of Bantu languages. This paper investigates the morphosyntactic behaviour, semantic implications, and functional roles of extensions within Kuria, a Bantu language of Tanzania. The study adopts Hyman’s morphocentric approach, specifically the CARP template (Causative-Applicative-Reciprocal-Passive), as its foundational framework to test whether Kuria adheres to this pan-Bantu default ordering. The data were collected in Tarime District (2014-2015) using a mixed methods approach, comprising questionnaires, semi-structured interviews, and video stimuli with 13 rural and urban speakers, and text analysis (the Kuria Bible). What Before Means: Teaching About The Communicative Contribution Of The English Pluperfect, Max Miller

This paper presents a text-based analysis of the communicative functions of the simple past and pluperfect tenses of English, and offers a pedagogical approach to assist learners in acquiring them. Following a functional, usage-based linguistics perspective, the analysis holds that the simple past expresses Time PAST, while the pluperfect expresses Time PAST, BEFORE. Thus only the latter tense signals a speaker's subjective creation of a linkage in time. The understanding of these meanings can enhance an English language teacher's effectiveness in the classroom (as in selecting texts and activities) and a language user's effectiveness in communication. This study aims at describing the appropriate and correct use of prepositions in elementary school students’ composition. The design of this study is qualitative research combined with formal approaches for students in grade 3, 4, 5 and 6. The results of the study indicate that (1) there is a preposition used in all grades; (2) there are some prepositions used in certain grade; (3) some preposition functions are found in all grades; and (4) some preposition functions are found in certain grades.

Sentence diagramming, which requires students to parse a sentence into its most basic components, provides a method to assist students in mastering syntactic fundamentals.

Traditional grammar instruction involves memorization of grammatical rules and practice exercise drills. This is an error analysis study on the interrogatives formed by 80 Form V students of Sekolah Menengah Ugama (Arab), Shamsul Maarif, Pulai Chondong, Machang Kelantan. Though these students have been learning English for 12 years, many still find it difficult to form wh and yes-no questions. The errors studied are confined to lexical errors and errors in 'fronting,' a syntactic consideration. The present work is intended to serve as a reference manual of the formation of the regular verb forms in five related Romance tongues - Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese and Romanian. Because of their common origin in Latin, it is logical to expect that these languages share many aspects of verb formation in common. This work compiles information about the morphological patterning of verbs and relates these to use and tense with charts reflecting their inflectioned endings. Such information will hopefully be of value to students of Romance languages as well as students of comparative linguistics.
