Language, the content and form of what people choose to say, has the ability to both describe facts about the world and change aspects of the world. Thus, what people utter is a critical instrument for measuring current social situations as well as social change. The honorific hierarchy of Nepali’s pronouns provides one particularly interesting tool for such measurement. This research examines the use and ideologies about second person pronouns in the village of Dabhung Thanti, Nepal in relation to their prescribed uses and ideologies in Kathmandu. Multiplayer online games form complex semiotic ecologies that include game-generated texts, player-to-player communication and collaboration, and associated websites that support in-game play. This article describes an exploratory study of the massively multiplayer online game (MMO) World of Warcraft (WoW), with specific attention to its qualities as a setting for second language (L2) use and development. This empirical study seeks to answer the following question: What is the nature of the linguistic ecology that WoW players are exposed to? Analysis Of A Genetic Isolate: The Case Of Carloforte (Italy), R. Robledo, L. Corrias, V. Bachis, N. Puddu, A. Mameli, G. Vona, C. M. Calò

We reviewed data collected during several studies concerning the genetic isolate of Carloforte (Sardinia, Italy) and analyzed new data on Y-chromosome markers. Carloforte is also a language island, where people still speaks Tabarchino, an archaic form of Ligurian dialect. Demographic data indicate that, in the early years of its history, Carloforte population was characterized by a high degree of endogamy and consanguinity rates that started to decrease around 1850, when marriages with Sardinian people began to occur more frequently. Cultural factors, mainly language, account for the high endogamy. Genetic data from classical markers, mtDNA and Ychromosome markers confirmed the strong …

We use two coupled equations to analyze the space-time dynamics of two interacting languages. Firstly, we introduce a cohabitation model, which is more appropriate for human populations than classical (non-cohabitation) models. Foreign language attitude plays a significant role in enhancing one’s motivation to learn a particular foreign language. This study aims to obtain an understanding of Indonesian students’ attitudes toward the Japanese language. The data were collected from 160 students learning Japanese. The Foreign Language Attitude Questionnaire (FLAQ), originally developed by Pierson et al. (1980), was used in this study. In addition, attitude factors identified by Pennington and Yu (1994) based on the results of FLAQ factor analysis were incorporated into the current research. Placing self-autonomy of human beings as purely rational subjects represents one extreme, while positioning rational human subjects as entirely dependent on psychological and socio-economic relations represents the other extreme. This study aims to explain how the main character, Minke, in narrative discourse addresses these two extremes. The data in this research were in the form of textual units analyzed using Bühler’s semiotic model. This study aims to describe how the subjects performed the editing steps and to examine whether the collaborative writing method, as part of the academic writing process—specifically the editing stage—can be used by lecturers to teach Bahasa Indonesia at the university level. Unlike previous studies, this research focuses on differences between men’s and women’s preferences in using collaborative writing. Based on data from sixty participants from the Faculty of Economics at Atma Jaya Catholic University Jakarta, this study employed a quasi-experimental design. This study aims to assess the competence of preschool children in producing directive acts. The data were collected in the form of utterances containing forms, functions, and strategies of directive acts. The subjects of this study were children aged 3;0–5;0 years from educated families. The theoretical frameworks employed were pragmatic theory and the Ethnography of Communication. The data were analyzed using an interactive model. The results show that preschool children already demonstrate: (1) fourteen competencies of directive acts, (2) six competencies of directive act functions, and (3) strategic competence in performing directive acts both directly and indirectly.

Communication strategies are systematic techniques used by foreign language learners to express their ideas when they encounter difficulties in communication due to incomplete mastery of B2-level proficiency. The Konversation course is a subject in which students are required to speak freely on particular topics. Moreover, learners are equipped with basic linguistic rules, which leads them to seek ways to make their messages acceptable. The communication strategies most widely used by JSJ UM students are transfer strategies, as they not only translate concepts literally but also use terms and vocabulary from their mother tongue and English when producing German utterances.
