This article analyses the translational strategies of the Sufi lexicon by means of a series of comparisons between the Persian text of Rūmī’s Fīhī mā fīhi (d. 1273) and its French translation, Le livre du dedans (1976). The English translation by Arthur John Arberry (1961) and its modern retranslation by Doug Marman (2010) are also put into perspective. To conduct this analysis, the translational approaches of three key terms – Ḥaqq (the Truth), esteghrāq (the state of immersion) and faqr (the state of poverty) – are analysed using a methodology of translation criticism that is inspired by Henri Meschonnic’s Poétique …

This master’s thesis is a discourse analysis of a traditional Lakota story, " Iktó na wičhá ha kiŋ”, or “Ikto and the Racoon Skin”, one of the 64 stories included in the “Dakota Texts”, which were collected by Ella Deloria at three Lakota reservations in 1930s as a part of Franz Boas’ language documentation project. This article analyzes naturally occurring video-recorded openings during which participants make the sensory social through the action of registering—calling joint attention to a selected, publicly perceiv- able referent so others shift their sensory attention to it. It examines sequence-initial actions that register referents for which a participant is regarded as responsible. Findings demonstrate a systematic preference organization which observably guides when and how people initiate registering sequences sensitive to ownership of, and displayed stance toward, the target referent. Analysis shows how registering an owned referent achieves intersubjectivity and puts involved participants’ face, affiliation, and social relationship on the line. A …

In his contribution, José del Valle looks at the intersection of the sociolinguistic study of Spanish in the US and the transformations of Spanish language departments in higher education. Del Valle traces the history of the institutionalization of Spanish teaching and study and its effects on linguistic research’s position within Spanish departments. Shifts in approaches to the use of language in social practice, and the growing demands on language units to act as service departments for language learners, has isolated scholars in those institutional homes from broader integration into sociolinguistic research.

The current study draws on Saito’s (2007) application to western context of the Japanese practice of appreciating the aesthetic and ethical aspects of everyday objects, examined through the complexity of aesthetic evaluation. Bourdieu’s (1984a) moderating variable cultural capital is used to advance an understanding of perceptual and linguistic complexity in daily aesthetic consumption. By engaging participants in a quasi-experiment of multi-sensory trials of everyday products (lemon squeezers), an examination was made of how language use reveals embodied knowledge of daily consumption practice. Part of a thesis about translating the Proustian idiolect, the article outlines the analysis of rendering patois, specific to Françoise. The two complete Romanian versions were achieved by Radu and Eugenia Cioculescu in the 60’s, and Irina Mavrodin in the 80’s. Linguistically significant for the servant class, Françoise speaks a savory French where 17th century French, patois, language faults, slang and innovations meet and overlay, making a clear analysis hard to accomplish. The article presents the expressive examples which underline translators’ disregard to idiolect, an aspect that ruins the prominent theme of the Proustian novel, the language.
