Cu Law Library Launches New Resource For Historical Colorado Statutory Research, Robert Linz

Colorado legal researchers have a new tool for statutory research. The University of Colorado's William A. Wise Law Library (Law Library or CU Law Library) has completed a digitization project of Colorado session laws. The collection contains PDF files of session law volumes from 1861 (when the Territory of Colorado was created) through 1992. The collection is available at lawlibrary.colorado.edu/colorado-session-laws. This article describes the need for such a collection, how it was created, and how to search it.

It is understood and well documented that technology affects almost every aspect of the practice of law. In August 2012 the American Bar Association (ABA) House of Delegates, recognizing the influence of technology, voted to amend the ABA Model Rules of Professional Conduct. Legal professionals have begun to comment on how such changes may affect lawyers in every area and size of practice. Although many lawyers have expressed the sentiment that they did not become lawyers to learn about technology, the changes to the standards of professional conduct will necessitate that attorneys have some basic technological competence. In July 2011, the Colorado legal community lost a champion of Indian rights and the environment when David Getches, a faculty member and dean at the University of Colorado Law School (CU Law), passed away. In the weeks that followed, CU Law's William A. Wise Law Library began to receive donations of Getches's writings and other materials about his life. The collection initially comprised nearly 1,000 bound books and reports. Over the months, it grew to include law review articles, transcripts of his speeches, photographs, and video clips.

Thinking About Technology - Steve Jobs Was Right About Html5, But Was He Right About Digital Publishing?, Darla Jackson

Steve Jobs predicted that HTML5 would replace Adobe Flash, and in November 2011, Adobe announced it would cease developing its Flash Player plug-in for mobile browsers and encourage developers to adopt the HTML5 standard. Ms. Jackson discusses some of the features of HTML5 and suggests that as search engine optimization and usability on mobile devices become increasingly important, law librarians should consider how HTML5 features may prove useful in achieving the goals of the law library. Further, she discusses how HTML5 may also influence the development of legal digital publishing initiatives

Thinking About Technology – Watson, Answer Me This: Will You Make Librarians Obsolete Or Can I Use Free And Open Source Software And Cloud Computing To Ensure A Bright Future?, Darla Jackson

In February 2011, Watson, IBM's "smart" computer, defeated two former Jeopardy champions. While the application of the technology may support some legal research functions, the current state of the technology probably will not allow Watson to replace law librarians in the near future. Yet, given the economic realities of our firms and institutions, librarians do need to consider technologies that may reduce the considerable cost associated with discovering and maintaining access to legal information. Free and open source software and systems and cloud-based initiatives may provide innovative approaches librarians should consider.

Thinking About Technology – Standard Bar Codes Beware- Smart Phone Users May Prefer Qr Codes, Darla Jackson

Quick Response (QR) codes are free to produce, allow access to data, and can be read with most smartphones. QR codes are already popular in some other countries and are gaining popularity in the United States. This article discusses this growing popularity and the reasons for it, how QR codes are being used in law libraries and the legal profession, and how they may be used by librarians in the future to add value through the marketing of professional and library services and by providing easy access to information from library resources.
