Bibliographic Access To Legal Research Databases Reconsidered, Gail M. Daly
Bibliographic Access To Legal Research Databases Reconsidered, Gail M. Daly
Law Library Staff & Faculty Works
Professor Daly reviews past attempts to catalog the contents of the legal research databases and identifies factors that contributed to the failure of those projects. She considers several alternative methods for providing access to electronic databases that are offered by the new technologies and information sources available today.

Law Faculty Publications
In his recent work on A History of American Law Publishing (1990), Professor Erwin Surrency emphasized the need to learn more about how lawyers purchased books in nineteenth-century America, especially since few book catalogs have survived to the present day.1 A random searching of older periodicals located in my library drew my attention to the "Catalogue of Modem Law-Books," consisting of three parts.

Reference Work In A Classified Collection: Is Lc Class K Successful?, Gail M. Daly
Reference Work In A Classified Collection: Is Lc Class K Successful?, Gail M. Daly
Law Library Staff & Faculty Works
With publication of the final law schedule, the Library of Congress classification system for legal materials is virtually complete. Examination of the completed schedules reveals some difficulties for reference use because of the assignment of non-law numbers to law-related materials, the arrangement of certain subjects within the law schedules, and the detailed nature of the law schedules themselves. Law libraries and reference librarians can take steps at the local level to address some of these problems and make the LC classification system more suitable for legal research collections.

Moving Into Management From The Outside, Lynn Wishart
Library Staff Articles
When accepting a promotion from outside the organization, the new manager must understand what is being given up and left behind, and must also realize clearly what expectations the new library holds. In the new position, the outside manager must articulate goals and find common ground with supervisors and subordinates. The take-charge period should be used for judicious decision making and intense learning.

Faculty Scholarship
The law library has a special and unique importance because of the nature of our legal system and its role as a laboratory for anyone involved in a legal proceeding. Students, faculty, lawyers, judges, and lay persons cannot accomplish legal work without the library. Law libraries, in the process of transition, are planning or implementing computer-based retrieval systems and video devices for training and instruction. Law librarians have significant responsibilities for accurate information retrieval and teaching legal research techniques.

Articles
Law school faculty members have a reputation for paying attention to their libraries. They achieved that collective reputation long ago through insistence on autonomous library administration by their own kind, and they have nurtured it by exhibiting greater dependence on libraries than the members of any other discipline. Expressions of their concern and involvement are recorded repeatedly in annual reports, budget justifications, fund-raising brochures, and the proceedings of ceremonial cornerstone layings.
