Training The Masses In “Informational Awareness”, Carol Choksy Dec 2017

Training The Masses In “Informational Awareness”, Carol Choksy

Proceedings from the Document Academy

The frameworks for “information literacy” and “media literacy” require a complex understanding of authority and context and neglect the most basic of ideas, that all sources have a perspective. Whether that perspective is useful or not is dependent upon its purpose. If a student is researching conspiracy theories, they will be looking at a vast array of perspectives. If a student is researching active measures, they will be looking at an even broader array. Beyond learning to determine whether a news article is “Fake News” students must be able to filter the snippets of information that inundate them on a …

Framing The Talk: Scholarship As Conversation In The Health Sciences, Candace K. Vance Nov 2017

Framing The Talk: Scholarship As Conversation In The Health Sciences, Candace K. Vance

Candace K. Vance

Abstract:
One frame of the ACRL’s information literacy threshold concepts is “Scholarship as Conversation.”  Students often do not appreciate the discursive element of research.  Knowledge practices for this frame include exercises and discussion to help develop the notion that scholarship is an ongoing conversation—a conversation where they can contribute and lend their voices and opinions, not merely accept or consume.  This chapter will examine how the expansion of scholarly venues through weblogs, research repositories, and social media allow more opportunities for a larger variety of perspectives and participation, allowing students, community, and any other stakeholders to add their thoughts and …

Cultural Competency In Health Sciences [Library], Silvia L. Lin Hanick Oct 2017

Cultural Competency In Health Sciences [Library], Silvia L. Lin Hanick

Open Educational Resources

This assignment was developed for students in HSF 090- Health Sciences who attend a 1-hour library session. The focus of this session and assignment is “research as inquiry.”

Research is iterative and depends upon asking increasingly complex or new questions whose answers in turn develop additional questions or lines of inquiry in any field. Students will practice this iterative process by experimenting with the trial and error necessary in the research process as they repeat and refine their searches. They will be encouraged to explore the way cultural competence changes depending on their field or topic focus.

This session will …

The Relationship Between Information Literacy And Global Learning, Valda J. Adeyiga Jun 2017

The Relationship Between Information Literacy And Global Learning, Valda J. Adeyiga

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between undergraduate student performance on an information literacy assessment activity and their performance in global learning assessment activities for three global learning outcomes: global awareness, global perspective, and global engagement.

Global learning is the process whereby people from varied backgrounds collaboratively analyze and seek solutions for complex problems that go beyond borders. Important components of global learning are the acquisition, analysis and use of information, relating to complex problems which may include, but are not limited to, poverty, environmental protection and food security. These components of global learning are analogous …

Our Difference Is Our Strength: Collaboration And Creativity In Co-Creating System Wide Information Literacy Learning Outcomes, Tom Adam, Colleen A. Burgess, Kim Mcphee, Christy Sich

Western Libraries Presentations

As instruction librarians, we find ourselves siloed from our fellow teaching librarians and faculty in the design, delivery, and assessment of our instruction. We persevere in adopting a creative lens when asked to teach specific skills within limited time frames, we negotiate for more time with our students to engage in higher order thinking about research and Information Literacy (IL), and we attempt to convince faculty to allow us a sliver of a grade percentage to reinforce the value of the assignments we employ in-session. At Western Libraries we are attempting to switch this reactive stance we’ve often found ourselves …

Information Has Value: A View From Three Institutions, Dani Brecher Cook, Jessica Davila Greene, Allegra Swift May 2017

Information Has Value: A View From Three Institutions, Dani Brecher Cook, Jessica Davila Greene, Allegra Swift

Library Staff Publications and Research

In this presentation, three librarians with diverse roles and employed at three dramatically different academic institutions (a community college, a private liberal arts college, and a public land-grant university) will discuss the ways in which their professional praxis of instruction related to “Information Has Value” converge and diverge. From these varied experiences, the presenters will then propose a tiered model of high-impact approaches to incorporating aspects of the scholarly communication librarian portfolio into library instruction, ranging from introductory community college writing courses to courses for students completing a capstone for their major. The presenters will also suggest ways to scaffold …

Technological University Dublin Library (DIT), Aungier Street are using the online marketing tool MailChimp to engage first year undergraduates, enhance the first year experience and support their transition into third level education. We have developed a digital library information pack called Library Learning, aimed at first-year undergraduates to lend support as they enter their first year within DIT. The pack is also intended as a support to the face-to-face Information and Digital Literacy sessions delivered to …

Do Faculty And Librarians See Information Literacy In The Same Way? A Study Of Alignment, Melody Chin, Daniel Walker Apr 2017

Do Faculty And Librarians See Information Literacy In The Same Way? A Study Of Alignment, Melody Chin, Daniel Walker

Research Collection Library

Faculty and Librarians are two distinct professional groups each with their own subcultures, values and experiences. Hardesty (1995) noted the existence of a "faculty culture" amongst faculty members, which quite likely shapes and influences the way these individuals perceive a highly subjective concept such as Information Literacy (IL). Faculty and Librarians in higher education institutions often work together in the development of IL Programs. However, despite this collaborative relationship, it is not clear as to whether the two professional groups perceive the concept of IL similarly, or whether there exists a divide. Understanding how both professions perceive IL should be …

Faculty Perception Of Information Literacy At Queensborough Community College, Leslie Ward, Miseon Kim Apr 2017

Faculty Perception Of Information Literacy At Queensborough Community College, Leslie Ward, Miseon Kim

Publications and Research

This study examines how faculty perceived information literacy classes provided by Queensborough Community College. A survey was distributed in the spring of 2017 via faculty e-mail. The survey focused on the faculty’s department affiliation, usage of information literacy (IL) instruction, and how they value the IL instruction. The results revealed that the highest proportion of faculty members who brought their students to the library and found it the most useful were the English and the Speech department, while faculty in the STEM fields were least likely to utilize the library instruction because they found it was irrelevant to their courses.

The Reconquista Student: Critical Information Literacy, Civics, And Confronting Student Intolerance, Jonathan T. Cope Jan 2017

The Reconquista Student: Critical Information Literacy, Civics, And Confronting Student Intolerance, Jonathan T. Cope

Communications in Information Literacy

Given the increasing power and prominence of political figures in the United States who openly espouse xenophobic, misogynistic, white nationalist positions it is only natural to anticipate encountering students who express these views in our libraries and classrooms. In this essay I use the methods of normative political theory to explore the following question: What are a set of consistent philosophical positions that Critical Information Literacy (CIL) could take that would allow it to respond to intolerance in a way that furthers its stated goals? CIL can draw upon the large body of literature on civic education in the United …

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

A quantitative study of the libraries of 7 Technical Universities (TUs) of Ghana was conducted to evaluate information literacy programmes at such universities in Ghana. The study employed a descriptive survey research strategy. A sample of 7 librarians out of the 8 TU libraries in Ghana was collected using purposive sampling. A questionnaire served as the instrument to collect data relating to the objectives of the study. The study gathered mostly quantitative data which were analyzed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS). The findings showed that the majority of the examined libraries included information literacy classes as part …
