Health Information Literacy On The Risks Of Using Skin Bleaching Products, Olufemi K. Aramide Phd, Olusoji S. Olatunji, Olusola Ayandele

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Information enables individuals to develop knowledge which can influence their health behavior and attitude while inadequate literacy about health information is associated with poor understanding of medical advice and negative health outcomes among the population. Skin bleaching is a health practice involving the (mis)use of chemical solutions to change one’s complexion to a lighter tone. This paper investigated the viability of using the concept of health information literacy to reduce skin bleaching by reviewing previous empirical studies on skin bleaching with emphasis on health information. Finding showed that skin bleaching is driven by a self-destructive, unattainable beauty standard. It also …

Making Data Bearable Workshop, Parts 1 & 2, Jeffrey M. Mortimore, Dawn N. Cannon-Rech

Data Management Services Instructional Materials

Making Data Bearable, Part 1: Data Management Basics
During this hands-on workshop, participants explore challenges and best practices related to research data management. Working in groups, participants perform a rudimentary data analysis and create figures and tables capturing the correlation between Gummi Bear flavor and "springiness." In the process, participants explore different kinds of research data and discuss manipulation, analysis, visualization, reporting, and sharing data for different audiences. This workshop is a precursor to discussing data management planning, especially as it relates to grant funding and publisher requirements. Specific skills covered include creating basic figures and charts in Excel and …

Technology, Information Literacy And Social Work Education, Laura Trull, David Vess

Libraries

This poster will demonstrate a unique series of interactive lessons, designed and implemented collaboratively by Social Work and Library faculty to support student information literacy skill development. This series of six lessons was implemented with junior-level social work students and focused on topics such as determining quality of sources, constructing citations, identifying research methodology, utilizing technology, research ethics and search techniques. Lesson outlines will be made available to participants and future research and evaluation plans will be discussed.

Desert Or Oasis: Reflecting On Teaching And Tweaking A Discovery Layer, Vera J. Lux, Amy Fyn, Robert J. Snyder Jun 2016

Desert Or Oasis: Reflecting On Teaching And Tweaking A Discovery Layer, Vera J. Lux, Amy Fyn, Robert J. Snyder

University Libraries Faculty Publications

Implementing and customizing a discovery layer affects not only users but also instruction librarians. To address the teaching implications, librarians from our mid-sized state university engaged in reflective practice to adjust our instruction methods in one-shot sessions. This self-assessment led us to questions about which potential discovery layer customizations would best meet users’ needs. For this reason, we surveyed users regarding their preferences in managing discovery layer results. Presenters will share the benefits received from the reflective practice, provide the results of our librarian and user assessments, and discuss how these informed our teaching and tweaking of the discovery layer.

Libguides: The Perfect Tool To Engage Students With Open Access Resources In The Classroom, Barbara M. Pope Apr 2016

Libguides: The Perfect Tool To Engage Students With Open Access Resources In The Classroom, Barbara M. Pope

Nebraska Library Association: Conferences

This poster presentation discussed how to use LibGuides to improve student learning in the classroom when the curriculum might not otherwise draw upon library resources. LibGuides can be created with links to specific open access resources, articles, and other items (as well as subscription resources) to support course assignments. Course LibGuides bring visibility to library resources that get overlooked and are easy to implement for distance learning or to complement other instructional materials.

Starting From Scratch: Meaningful Integration Of Information Literacy Through Collaborative Course And Assignment Design, Chris Sweet, Meghan Burke Jan 2014

Starting From Scratch: Meaningful Integration Of Information Literacy Through Collaborative Course And Assignment Design, Chris Sweet, Meghan Burke

Scholarly Publications

Instruction librarians are all too familiar with well-intentioned research papers and assignments that reduce information literacy to a simplistic checklist (must include 4 peer-reviewed sources) or set of skills (use interlibrary loan, cite materials properly). Librarians and classroom faculty should recognize that information literacy cannot just be magically imparted to students through a single assignment or library instruction session. Becoming information literate requires repeated practice in a variety of contexts. How often have you wished for the opportunity to just sit down with a faculty member and start from scratch when designing an assignment –or even better- an entire course? …

Reimaging Information Literacy As Metaliteracy In A Credit Library Course, Vera J. Lux Oct 2013

Reimaging Information Literacy As Metaliteracy In A Credit Library Course, Vera J. Lux

University Libraries Faculty Publications

To address the ways users interact with information introduced by digital technologies, many librarians have looked beyond information literacy to incorporate multiple literacies into their teaching. This presentation will highlight a credit library course that was reimagined around the comprehensive conceptual framework of metaliteracy. Discover how this approach engaged students in learning core skills, such as advanced search strategies and source evaluation, through assignments involving the use of search engines, social media, and emerging technologies.
