This is a one-shot instruction session taught to upperclassmen in a Strategic Management Course working on a group mock-consulting project. We introduce them to potential sources of information for the secondary research component of their project including company, industry and market research resources. There are three parts to the lesson plan: 1) a beach ball activity (which we learned about at an ACRL NEC Annual Conference 2018) to introduce them to different information source types, including discussion of information literacy principles; 2) a brief introduction to the database sources; and 3) a group workshop activity.

Delivering innovative information literacy instruction to an ever-growing student population requires some resetting of previous practices and ideas. Collaboratively developed interactive learning activities that address library skills and the research process presented in a flipped-classroom style may represent a useful innovation in this area. This paper addresses the ongoing project at the University of South Florida (USF) Tampa Library in which interactive digital learning objects are developed, embedded into all sections of a university course via the online learning management system, assessed, and reworked.

Objective: To discover whether adding leisure books, according to a carefully designed collection development policy, to a consumer health collection (CHC) in a hospital would lead to an increase in usage of the CHC collection, an increased number of monthly subscriptions for membership in the Health Information Center (HIC), and change in the subject of materials circulated.

Methods: The collection development policy, specifically for the Leisure Reading Collection (LRC), included bestselling titles within 3 years, award winning fiction, and classics. Objective: To describe how the library’s online tutorial for medical students, “Introduction to Citation Management Tools,” was created and integrated into the College of Medicine’s Residency Preparation Boot Camp. Implemented in 2017, passing the tutorial is still a requirement for completing the boot camp.

Methods: In 2017, the Maguire Medical Library was asked by undergraduate and graduate medical education faculty to create a citation management tutorial for 4th-year medical students preparing to commence their respective residency programs. Research has shown that at least 94% of medical students use Wikipedia as an information resource (Usaid, 2012), despite medical school faculty telling them not to. In fact, medical schools do not train students to improve Wikipedia or use it critically (Azzam, 2017). The Wikiproject Medicine course was created at the invitation and in partnership with Dr. Amin Azzam at the University of California San Francisco, who started the original program in 2013. Background: Patient Education is consistently cited by the Joint Commission as needing work at many institutions. However, with a limited number of patient educators and high nurse to patient ratios it is hard to find the time to adequately teach patients all they may need to know. The goal of this project was to create a course and online guide for nurses and patient educators. The course was approved for continuing education credit for nurses, dieticians, and health education specialists. This session, led by two librarians and an adjunct faculty member, described the benefits of replacing a traditional research paper with an I Search paper (a more informal first person research narrative) for students taking a first year inquiry course. An I Search paper facilitates student learning by encouraging students to select a topic that piques their interest and places the focus on students’ personal research journeys. Although this assignment was designed for a semester-long credit-bearing course, we discussed ways to incorporate aspects of this assignment into a library one-shot.

Inspired by Safiya Umoja Noble’s Algorithms of Oppression, essays and lesson plans in Critical Library Pedagogy (Nicole Pagowsky and Kelly McElroy, eds.), and the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education, this presentation described a critical pedagogy activity that interrogates systems of oppression in library research tools and challenges students to reflect on the emotional aspects of their research experience. We discussed how we have modified the activity for different courses and disciplines, classroom settings, and class session lengths. This activity is suitable for librarians who are beginning to consider how to incorporate critical pedagogy into their teaching.

Since 2017, a library director and English professor have been collaborating on an embedded librarian project for a required Critical Thinking seminar. Our guiding concept is inquiry-based learning, and we have seen students connect with information literacy more deeply as we encourage them to explore information resources and to consider what scholarly conversation means to them. This interactive session presented a student-centered approach to archival instruction using a modified version of the Question Formulation Technique (QFT). This session explored how a traditional library instruction session was adapted to give students a richer and more interactive learning experience leading to the expansion of a collaboration between an introductory biology class and the library. The session detailed the adaption of an existing lesson plan, creation of an asynchronous scavenger hunt, and addition of a student-centered, hands-on assignment.

To encourage self-driven learning, the library instruction session was redesigned to include hands-on, in-class components and an asynchronous scavenger hunt. Both changes were enthusiastically received by the course faculty.

Space Traffic Management (STM) has already demonstrated its potential to be extremely data-intensive. The large number of objects on orbit today, if observed constantly throughout their lifetimes, could produce a staggeringly large number of observations that might in turn generate large numbers of orbits. Orbit data with a lengthy time history can be used to produce estimates of maneuver frequency, susceptibility to natural forces such as drag, and (if combined with photometric data) assessments of behavioral patterns of life.

The function of the library is to collect, preserve, and provide access to recorded human communication. “Documentality” is an umbrella term that embraces the complexity and scope of this enterprise. By definition, the artifacts of recorded human communication are technology dependent, language dependent, and socially constructed. These factors impact and constrain the message contained in the recordings. This poster highlights a few of the challenges and introduces a number of specializations that provide ways to overcome the difficulties. An application to the Dialogue between Science and Theology about Creation is discussed.
