As AI-driven literature review tools become widespread, academic librarians must grapple with a fundamental question—should we ban these tools, selectively curate their use, or embrace them fully? This keynote explores the three competing schools of thought shaping AI’s role in undergraduate literature reviews.

The Restrict school argues that students who have not proven capable of writing quality literature review should be restricted from use of such tools. Everyone is familiar with ChatGPT. But can ChatGPT alone be used for information retrieval? In this Keynote speech, Aaron argues that ChatGPT or similar large language models alone is not sufficient for information retrieval. As databases such as Scopus, Dimensions announce new beta search tools that leverage generative AI, he provides a overview of how these tools that blend search with generative AI (large language models) work (using a technique known as Retrieval Augmented Generation or RAG) and explains the pros and cons of this new class of search tools.

This overview highlights key responsibilities and functions undertaken by research librarians. Librarians at Singapore Management University (SMU) Libraries developed an information literacy programme, titled Keep Calm and Read Laterally! as part of the Libraries’ flagship BiteSized Workshop Series. The initiative aimed to further the digital competence of students through advocating critical and effective engagement with digital information. Digital Science’s Dimensions has been officially launched in January 2018. At a first glance, this is an exciting development, bringing new competition to the existing field, which is dominated by Clarivate’s Web of Science and Elsevier’s Scopus. Since Dimensions is a freemium, features such as full text and citation analytics require a subscription. Scholars have unprecedented access to subscription and open access (OA) content, yet figuring out how to discover and access legitimate versions of articles remains an aggravating experience for many researchers. They face authentication hoops, myriad vendor platforms with uncertain holdings, and mystifying an obscure OA source. Researchers that start with Google Scholar may bypass library authentication and face paywalls. Conversely, library discovery tools fail to expose and deliver much of the available OA content, and especially under-represent Green OA from repositories. As the availability of open access (OA) copies continues to grow, platforms and libraries are increasingly facing the possibility of linking users to version of record copies as well as to OA but non-version of record copies of the same article. Some advocate prioritizing linking to OA copies while others argue that the version of record should be prioritized.
