Online Learning In Post-Covid Library Instruction: Creating A Library Skills And Orientation Blackboard Course At The University Of Mississippi, Brooke Gross
The Southeastern Librarian
This paper examines the development process of a library Blackboard course by a Research & Instruction Librarian at the University of Mississippi over the course of one summer. The Library Skills and Orientation course sought to address two issues: limited first-year instruction capabilities and underdeveloped skillsets in upper-level students. It was designed to replace first-year instruction where able and supplement subject-specific instruction where needed. Pursuing new online learning initiatives can be a tough sell, however, when many institutions are attempting to return to normal in-person routines after two years of forced virtual work due to the pandemic. Georgia’S Libraries And The Needs Of Patrons Experiencing Homelessness: An Exploratory Study, Anne Blood
The Southeastern Librarian
This paper presents a sample survey of Georgia libraries’ services for those experiencing homelessness, conducted in the spring of 2020 before COVID-19 closed libraries across the country. It examines previous research on best practices to aid those experiencing homelessness and former attempts to implement these practices. From these practices and experiences the survey questions were designed. The questions are as follows: what barriers exist, if any, at these libraries that might make it difficult for those experiencing homelessness to use library services; do these libraries follow best practices standards in their services that help all patrons feel welcome using the …

The 1-2-3 Of Market Research For Business Startups: A Case Study In Library Instruction, Daniel Le, Marie-Louise Watson
Georgia Library Quarterly
This article describes a practical way to teach student entrepreneurs to search and use market data for business startup plans. The conventional way of teaching students to find articles and business intelligence based on a class assignment can be challenging for many students without an academic business background. This library instruction approach sequentially uses three databases enriched with business data and infographics to support the development of critical thinking for student entrepreneurs. It teaches entrepreneurial personality support, analysis, visualization, and market mapping.

Academics Libraries have developed electronic collections to provide continuing services to their patrons especially during research. Databases and other scholarly online resources have become the main support system of many academic libraries. Beginning in March 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic had a powerfully disruptive and transformative influence on libraries all over the world and some of the services were altered. The University of Memphis Libraries was not an exception. Meeting the challenges associated with significantly increased need for online content, the University Libraries continued to provide access to scholarly resources and supportive reference and instruction services to the diverse academic communities …

Senior Citizens And Digital Information Access: The Obstruction Of Comforting Silence, Rodney C. Lawley
The Southeastern Librarian
This study investigates the possibility of undetected access obstructions preventing senior citizens from using digital information maintained by Alabama public libraries. Research methods include a literature review, a survey of Alabama public library administrators, and a textual analysis of online public library programming guides from four urban areas within the state. The survey gauges the perceptions, experiences, and actions of library administrators pertaining to digital library accessibility for senior citizens. The textual analysis component measures significant outreach efforts by public libraries targeting senior citizen patrons. Data collected suggest that Alabama public libraries lack unity and direction in their approach to …

Arkansas Related Civil War Holdings At Public Institutions Of Higher Education In The State, David Sesser
The Southeastern Librarian
An examination of a library collection using an existing comprehensive bibliography on a particular subject allows librarians to make collection development decisions. In this study, the collections of each public university in Arkansas is examined for Civil War related titles, compiled from two historiographical articles which appeared in the Arkansas Historical Quarterly. The results indicate that collections in the state contain a wide range of items included in the search. The data gathered in this project may help librarians at these institutions and others in the state determine what items need to be added to their respective collections in order …
