The third of a 5-part series of lectures on scholarly communication, this lecture introduces learners to the ways in which various information architecture structures, such as indexes or natural-language-processing algorithms, impact information access and use. University Libraries at Coastal Carolina University acknowledges the importance of open access as a doorway to equity, access, and inclusion. In spring 2023, the library voted on and approved an open-access statement that encourages librarians to publish their work openly and to support faculty by providing guidance, encouraging the use of the institutional repository, and helping to fund the cost of open access.

We launched an open-access awareness program to educate librarians and faculty about these initiatives. We developed classes and, in order to promote them, we produced our own informative and concise videos to help librarians and faculty understand …

During 2020-21 two business faculty from different institutions together with OER librarians, undergraduate students, and graduate assistants conspired to create a faculty-access-only test bank aligned to senior undergraduate-level open textbook, Strategic Management (2020) and AACSB Standards. Test bank development followed instructional and ethical practices for non-disposable assignments including faculty development of assignments, student ownership of student work, student “opt in” to go public, choice of no or some student attribution, financial incentives for various project participants, project MOUs, professional copyediting, and public release to vetted requestors. Textbook affordability is becoming a bigger and bigger problem for students. Access to textbooks is essential for students to be able to meet their learning needs and have equal opportunity to excel as their peers. Open Textbooks are one response to this issue, but while most library outreach is focused on faculty members, students are an underutilized voice in the open education conversation. This presentation aims to educate students on what open textbooks are, what their limitations are, and how all students can participate in advocating for more affordable course materials.

Undergraduates are often left out of conversations surrounding open access. While they may not share the same concerns about publishing and prestige as faculty and graduate students, they do consume vast amounts of information, and thus can benefit just as much as those farther in their academic careers by knowing how to find, evaluate, and use open access resources.
