Context Analysis Of Top Seven Retracted Articles: Should Retraction Watch Revisit The List?, Rosy Jan, Shohar Bano, Ikhlaq Ur Rehman Syed, Midhat Mehraj

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Significant and serious scientific misconduct in a research article leads to its retraction. Citing such articles further perpetuates the erroneous work. An article unknowingly builds on false claims of a

retracted article, the new and unsuspicious article may compromise the integrity of the scientific literature. This type of implicit dependency on a retracted article can be highly risky and harmful. Thus the focus of the study is to identify the journals citing the retracted articles with emphasis on the examination of context of citations received by top seven highly cited retracted papers identified and listed by Retraction watch. In-depth analysis …

Major Trends In Lis Research: A Bibliometric Analysis, Oluwaseyi H. Wusu, Nneka G. Lazarus

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

This study provides an overview of the Library and Information Science (LIS) research from 1980 through 2017. We employ bibliometric and text mining analyses on a sample of 500 most cited articles to examine the impact of factors such as number of authors, enhanced institutions, document types and keywords on the number of citations that they received. We also investigate major trends in LIS research literature including contribution of different countries, variations across publication years and identifying active research areas and major journal outlets. This study serves as a resource for future studies on LIS trends demonstrating the attributes of …

All Musselman Library Staff Works

Students in the discipline of Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies are uniquely positioned to critically engage with systems of power and apply academic theory to real world practice as a field that has a clear and implicit social justice angle to its scholarship. The Open Access movement can benefit from the critical theories used in WGS as a means of ensuring maximum inclusivity of the movement. Further, WGS students must acknowledge their privileged position within an academic institution and publish in ways that undermine the systems of power that lock up knowledge behind a toll in order to align their …

User Engagement With Social Media, Implication On The Library Usage: A Case Of Selected Public And Academic Libraries In Malaysia, Sharyna Shafawi, Basri Hassan

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

The mainstream use of social media has impacted the library as it has been identified to be an efficient platform for libraries to foster networking and enhance engagement with their user community. The unique characteristics of social media with ‘high tech’, ‘interactive’ blend with the ‘human touch’ give a valuable means for libraries to provide information resources and services beyond their physical walls. However, despite its widespread usage, an engagement rate on social media is still low among library users and evaluation of social media use is still elusive and scarce in the library literature. Prior studies have yet to …

Plugged In: Identifying Open (& Subscribed) Access, Aaron Tay

Research Collection Library

Scholars have unprecedented access to subscription and open access (OA) content, yet figuring out how to discover and access legitimate versions of articles remains an aggravating experience for many researchers. They face authentication hoops, myriad vendor platforms with uncertain holdings, and mystifying an obscure OA source. Researchers that start with Google Scholar may bypass library authentication and face paywalls. Conversely, library discovery tools fail to expose and deliver much of the available OA content, and especially under-represent Green OA from repositories. Our panel discusses several approaches to improving access discovery by giving scholars tools to identify accessible content and using …

The Privileged Link: Open Access, Version Of Record, Or Let The User Decide?, Lisa Janicke Hinchliffe, Aaron Tay, Maria Aghazarian, Johan Tilstra

Research Collection Library

As the availability of open access (OA) copies continues to grow, platforms and libraries are increasingly facing the possibility of linking users to version of record copies as well as to OA but non-version of record copies of the same article. Some advocate prioritizing linking to OA copies while others argue that the version of record should be prioritized. In many cases, this is a question of whether to link to a copy that the library has licensed over the copies that are freely available; however, the same conundrum can occur with respect to publisher-hosted OA content vs. copies available …
