Although called a “mini-digitization,” the recent project to scan six photographs from the IC 086 Hermann Hospital Archive Records is part of a larger effort. With help from a UTHealth community member, the McGovern Historical Center now has digital files and a detailed inventory for about 185 blueprints of the Hermann Professional Building. The TMC Library ended our subscription to RefWorks to focus on open products for students, faculty, and staff. Learning and using an open citation manager like Zotero or Mendeley is a good lifelong learning goal which will support future research projects. Get started and learn more about Zotero and Mendeley.

In honor of this week, we’re excited to highlight one of the newest collections in the Dissertations, Theses & Projects section of Digital Commons@TMC: scholarly work from UTHealth’s Cizik School of Nursing Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Program. Since launching on September 1st, over 60 student abstracts, many accompanied by project posters, have been submitted. These works have already received more than 1,000 downloads a testament to their impact and reach.

In the early 20th century, polio was one of the most feared diseases in the world. It struck quickly, and for some, left lasting paralysis—especially in the muscles that control breathing. That’s where the iron lung came in.

This large, capsule-like machine enclosed a patient’s body up to the neck in an airtight chamber. Through shifts in air pressure, it caused the chest to rise and fall, simulating natural breathing. On April 5th, 2005, the first article was deposited in Digital Commons@TMC. Since then, more than 34,000 items have been added, including dissertations/theses and projects, archival materialsfrom John P. McGovern Historical Collections & Research Center and content from seven open access peer-reviewed academic journals hosted on the platform.

World Immunization Week, celebrated in the last week of April, highlights the collective action needed and to promote the use of vaccines to protect people of all ages against disease. This year, it takes place from April 24-30, 2025. The goal of World Immunization Week is for more individuals and communities are protected from vaccine-preventable diseases.

Psychiatry Online offers premium content from the American Psychiatric Association (APA) including specialized textbooks, journals, patient guides and professional development tools, and the indispensable DSM-5.

Also included is the Psychotherapy Library, a collection of over 20 ebooks on behavioral health and therapy, along with accompanying instructional videos. PsycARTICLES nearly 200,000 full-text, peer-reviewed articles published by the APA.

Archivists and Special Collections Librarians, Tara Sims and Kelsey Koym, at the Texas Medical Center Library (McGovern Historical Center), have recently embarked on an investigation to identify, test, and quarantine some of its most intriguing—and potentially hazardous—items: beautiful, vibrant Victorian-era books bound in materials possibly dyed with heavy metals, such as arsenic, lead, and mercury.

Five Newly Processed Dentistry Collections, Arthur Fowler

Five dental collections have been processed and are now available for research at the McGovern Historical Center collection search site.

These collections were processed by Arthur Fowler, while interning at the McGovern Historical Center this summer. These collections are almost 12 cubic feet of material. Materials included books, scrapbooks, papers, ephemera, plaques, and personal items belonging to dental professionals spanning 110 years from 1902 to 2012.

The medicines used for the Toxic Medicines and Toxic Books exhibit were selected based on their historical use to treat various ailments and diseases; however, these treatments are now known today to be quite harmful to human health. It is important to remember that the ideology around how the body works and how to treat disease has greatly changed over the last several centuries.

This larger locker can accept a variety of package sizes. Add it as a new address to your account, select the option to “Find an Amazon pickup location near you” and then with the Library’s zip code 77030, select the locker for your delivery. 2024 Give2History: Adopt a Box in October. What does it mean to Adopt a Box? It cost roughly $50 to preserve the historical materials within a single unprocessed. Your donation provides us enough funds to purchase preservation supplies for this box. That includes a new acid-free archival box and all the folders, buffered paper, and polyester document/photograph preservers needed to preserve the materials in that box.

Elsevier has recently highlighted The TMC Library’s Digital Commons Exhibits as one of their “Current DC Exhibit Customers” featured on their Digital Commons Exhibits page. Since 2023, The TMC Library started to add Digital Commons Exhibits to this online collection available to users worldwide. Currently there are 8 regular exhibits, as well as a scrolling exhibit available featuring a few of the following: Historical A/V, Houston’s Fight Against Tuberculosis and Christmas Seals (1911-1980s) and The History of the Texas Medical Center Library: From 1915 to Present.

The Friends of the Texas Medical Center Library invite to the 2024 Book & Author Event featuring Jennifer M. Ross-Nazzal, PhD author of Making Space for Women: Stories from Trailblazing Women of NASA’s Johnson Space Center.

Dr. Ross-Nazzal, winner of the 2023 Liz Carpenter Award for Best Book on the History of Women will challenge perceptions and opens STEM fields—including space medicine—to new generations of women by bringing forth twenty-one engaging interviews conducted for the NASA Oral History Project in this compelling volume.
