Collectively, the Texas Medical Center is the largest employer in Houston and the 8th largest business district in the United States. The TMC includes 50 medicine-related institutions, including 21 hospitals and two specialty institutions, two medical schools, six nursing schools, and schools of dentistry, public health, and pharmacy. According to The Alzheimer’s Association, more than 7 million Americans are currently living with Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia, marking a significant milestone in the nation's public health.

Although called a “mini-digitization,” the recent project to scan six photographs from the IC 086 Hermann Hospital Archive Records is part of a larger effort. With help from a UTHealth community member, the McGovern Historical Center now has digital files and a detailed inventory for about 185 blueprints of the Hermann Professional Building. Learning and using an open citation manager like Zotero or Mendeley is a good lifelong learning goal which will support future research projects. In honor of this week, we’re excited to highlight one of the newest collections in the Dissertations, Theses & Projects section of Digital Commons@TMC: scholarly work from UTHealth’s Cizik School of Nursing Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Program. Since launching on September 1st, over 60 student abstracts, many accompanied by project posters, have been submitted. These works have already received more than 1,000 downloads a testament to their impact and reach.

In the early 20th century, polio was one of the most feared diseases in the world. It struck quickly, and for some, left lasting paralysis—especially in the muscles that control breathing. That’s where the iron lung came in.

This large, capsule-like machine enclosed a patient’s body up to the neck in an airtight chamber. Through shifts in air pressure, it caused the chest to rise and fall, simulating natural breathing. Since then, more than 34,000 items have been added, including dissertations/theses and projects, archival materialsfrom John P. World Immunization Week, celebrated in the last week of April, highlights the collective action needed and to promote the use of vaccines to protect people of all ages against disease. This year, it takes place from April 24-30, 2025. The goal of World Immunization Week is for more individuals and communities are protected from vaccine-preventable diseases.

Also included is the Psychotherapy Library, a collection of over 20 ebooks on behavioral health and therapy, along with accompanying instructional videos. PsycARTICLES nearly 200,000 full-text, peer-reviewed articles published by the APA.

Making The Most Of Artificial Intelligence And Large Language Models To Support Collection Development In Health Sciences Libraries, Ivan Portillo, David Carson

Library Articles and Research

This project investigated the potential of generative AI models in aiding health sciences librarians with collection development. Researchers at Chapman University’s Harry and Diane Rinker Health Science campus evaluated four generative AI models—ChatGPT 4.0, Google Gemini, Perplexity, and Microsoft Copilot—over six months starting in March 2024. Two prompts were used: one to generate recent eBook titles in specific health sciences fields and another to identify subject gaps in the existing collection. The first prompt revealed inconsistencies across models, with Copilot and Perplexity providing sources but also inaccuracies. The second prompt yielded more useful results, with all models offering helpful analysis …

This study investigated the lived experiences of individuals living with HIV (PLWH) in the Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) area of Texas during the COVID-19 pandemic, using an Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) framework. The research examined the intersection of health, social dynamics, and psychological resilience among PLWH, who faced compounded vulnerabilities due to systemic inequities and the dual public health crises of HIV and COVID-19. Through semi-structured interviews with ten participants from diverse backgrounds, the study captured the profound impacts of disrupted healthcare systems, heightened stigma, and social isolation on this marginalized population. The findings reveal that the pandemic exacerbated existing inequities …

Archivists and Special Collections Librarians, Tara Sims and Kelsey Koym, at the Texas Medical Center Library (McGovern Historical Center), have recently embarked on an investigation to identify, test, and quarantine some of its most intriguing—and potentially hazardous—items: beautiful, vibrant Victorian-era books bound in materials possibly dyed with heavy metals, such as arsenic, lead, and mercury.
