The medicines used for the Toxic Medicines and Toxic Books exhibit were selected based on their historical use to treat various ailments and diseases; however, these treatments are now known today to be quite harmful to human health. It is important to remember that the ideology around how the body works and how to treat disease has greatly changed over the last several centuries.

To help you keep your deliveries safe during busy days in the medical center, the TMC Library is excited to host an Amazon Locker named Skate, now available inside the Library. This larger locker can accept a variety of package sizes. Add it as a new address to your account, select the option to “Find an Amazon pickup location near you” and then with the Library’s zip code 77030, select the locker for your delivery. 2024 Give2History: Adopt a Box in October. What does it mean to Adopt a Box? It cost roughly $50 to preserve the historical materials within a single unprocessed. Your donation provides us enough funds to purchase preservation supplies for this box. That includes a new acid-free archival box and all the folders, buffered paper, and polyester document/photograph preservers needed to preserve the materials in that box.

Elsevier has recently highlighted The TMC Library’s Digital Commons Exhibits as one of their “Current DC Exhibit Customers” featured on their Digital Commons Exhibits page. Since 2023, The TMC Library started to add Digital Commons Exhibits to this online collection available to users worldwide. Currently there are 8 regular exhibits, as well as a scrolling exhibit available featuring a few of the following: Historical A/V, Houston’s Fight Against Tuberculosis and Christmas Seals (1911-1980s) and The History of the Texas Medical Center Library: From 1915 to Present.

The Friends of the Texas Medical Center Library invite to the 2024 Book & Author Event featuring Jennifer M. Ross-Nazzal, PhD author of Making Space for Women: Stories from Trailblazing Women of NASA’s Johnson Space Center.

Dr. Ross-Nazzal, winner of the 2023 Liz Carpenter Award for Best Book on the History of Women will challenge perceptions and opens STEM fields—including space medicine—to new generations of women by bringing forth twenty-one engaging interviews conducted for the NASA Oral History Project in this compelling volume.

This event was in conjunction with the National Library of Medicine's traveling exhibit, Making a World of Difference: Stories about Global Health, on display on the Library's 4th floor from June 3 - July 13, 2024.

Objective

This study collected and analyzed data on the required and recommended textbooks and board exam prep resources in academic health sciences libraries that serve accredited colleges of osteopathic medicine (COM) programs in the United States.

Methods

The study consisted of locating, compiling, and analyzing data on the required and recommended texts and board exam prep resources through the COM libraries’ public-facing websites.

Results

The investigators compiled the required or recommended texts and the board exam prep resources used within the COM curricula from 38 COM libraries.

Hermann Hospital A/V Inventory, Matt Richardson

Archivists at the McGovern Historical Center, recently published a guide to the audiovisual items found in the Hermann Hospital Historical Archive. Nearly 200 audio recordings, approximately 250 videos, and 46 reels of film are now described item-by-item and can be searched or browsed by title online.
