Faculty and Staff Scholarship

Dr. David W. Voyles (1834–1899) of Washington County, Indiana, served as Assistant Surgeon and Surgeon with the 66th Indiana Infantry Regiment during the Civil War. The letters of Dr. Voyles to his wife Susan, dating from November 1862 to January 1864, provide a glimpse into the mind of an educated, thoughtful man. Voyles wrote eloquently about the war, his political views (Republican and antislavery), and, like so many other soldiers, the lack of letters from home. Archivist Mary K. Marlatt has transcribed and edited the letters. Her introduction provides information on Voyles, his family, his regiment, and his life after …

Rochester Regional Health (RRH) is currently one of two large, multi-hospital healthcare organizations serving the Rochester, NY area. As such, RRH is also one of the region's largest employers. This collection documents the evolution of RRH through a process of hospital mergers, reorganizations, and expansion of services that began in 1984 with the founding of Rochester Health Care, Inc. (RHC) and continues through the merger of RHC with The Genesee Health System in 1994 and subsequent restructuring and rebranding throughout the late 1990s/early 2000s. This collection documents the development of the Park Avenue Hospital in Rochester, NY, its relocation from downtown Rochester to the suburb of Greece (where it was renamed Park Ridge Hospital), its growth there, and its subsequent merger with St. Mary’s Hospital to create the Unity Health System. Older materials documenting the Park Avenue Hospital also include information pertaining to the Park Avenue Hospital School of Nursing. In the 1980s, Dr. William M. Valenti became an early leader in the treatment of HIV/AIDS patients in Rochester, NY. The collection documents his career as a physician and as founder of Community Health Network, Inc., a not-for-profit community based medical facility for HIV care. The collection also documents the global medical response to the emergence of HIV/AIDS and changing cultural attitudes towards those infected with the virus. The collection includes published books and periodicals, newspaper clippings, and a small amount of graphic and audiovisual material.
