With the overturning of Roe v. Wade in June 2022, the author saw a need for an assessment of her institutional library’s collection of resources about reproductive and sexual health, especially on topics related to abortion and birth control. The author worked as a cataloging librarian in Texas at the time and anticipated that patrons would turn to the library for information about reproductive matters and thought a project concerning the reproductive and sexual health collection was vital for her library. The continuous advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) and large language models (LLMs) has presented several opportunities for librarians to reduce their workload and become more efficient. This session will explore the potential of generative AI chatbots in assisting health sciences librarians with collection development. Hermann Hospital, as it was originally known, has been a cornerstone of Houston’s medical community for more than a century. Over the years, the institution experienced major expansions, several name changes, and even a few scandals, all while shaping the growth of the Texas Medical Center. The photographs featured in this exhibit, taken between 1947 and 1976, highlight both the hospital’s transformation and the evolving Houston skyline. They also capture milestones such as the launch of Life Flight, which forever changed emergency medical care.

To help navigate complex issues caused by changes in technology, regulations, and user expectations, SeamlessAccess is producing a toolkit that gives librarians a framework for auditing their resource access. Structured into four key areas—Usability, Privacy, Reliability, and Security—the toolkit enables library staff the ability to identify the risks and opportunities that inform decision-making and advocate for future investment. In this paper, the authors explore the usability and privacy sections of the toolkit. The Texas Medical Center (TMC) is home to the largest concentration of medical professionals and experts anywhere in the world. Collectively, the Texas Medical Center is the largest employer in Houston and the 8th largest business district in the United States. The TMC includes 50 medicine-related institutions, including 21 hospitals and two specialty institutions, two medical schools, six nursing schools, and schools of dentistry, public health, and pharmacy. Living Heritage, Resilience And Ethically Informed Infrastructures In Malawi, Martha B. Lerski, Frank Puluputu Mwale

Publications and Research

Rooted in a rural community’s needs, this paper explores how historically, and ethically informed infrastructures can support community engagement towards identification, documentation, and dissemination of local, traditional, and indigenous knowledge relating to climate change. The paper examines climate adaptation and sustainability issues through the lenses of community organizing and Library & Information Science best practices. It draws on a growing body of literature identifying a role for expanded epistemological and subject discipline perspectives. While the impacts of climate on material culture are increasingly recognized, intangible, and biocultural heritage have not received as much attention.
