In order to increase the value and discoverability of their metadata, libraries explore options for making that data available and useful outside of the data silo of the library world through the adoption of Linked Data and Linked Open Data (LOD). OCLC Research conducted its 2018 International Linked Data Survey for Implementers. Results showed that 41% of the linked data projects/services described in 2018 were reported as using Wikidata as a source they consumed. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the role ICTs can play in repackaging of indigenous knowledge. An exploratory approach through extensive review of related literature was adopted for this study. Conceptual framework was developed to understand indigenous knowledge and the ways it can be documented and communicated by packaging and repackaging it for preservation and consequent dissemination from generation to generation. Transformative agreement (TA) is an umbrella term used to describe contracts between institutions and publishers intended to transform the current, primarily subscription-based, journal publishing model to a fully open access (OA) model. The idea originated in a 2015 white paper from the Max Planck Digital Library (MPDL), which posited that the current level of investment ($10 billion worldwide) is sufficient to fund the transformation to OA within existing publishing structures: a system in which 60% of the market is controlled by five publishers who maintain excessive profit margins.

Since the Chinese American Librarians Association’s Academic Resources and Repository System (CALASYS, https://ir.cala-web.org/) was initiated in 2013, its collections have grown gradually by way of the Committee’s curation and entries with occasional help from LIS students. In order to resolve the bottleneck problems, promote CALASYS and expand its content, the 2020-2021 CALASYS Committee has strongly pursued the idea of opening CALASYS to all of the CALA members. I explained and demonstrated the process I came up with to use OCLC WMS to do an overlap analysis of the online journal titles that we subscribe to directly through EBSCO, i.e. our paid subscriptions, and the access we have to those titles through our databases, in order to identify subscribed titles that we could potentially cancel. This is timely since the EBSCO renewal process starts in early June.

This article details the annual project to collect, organize, and analyze usage data to inform the library’s electronic resource renewal decisions.


Janice received the 2022 HELIN (Higher Education Library Information Network) Award in Honor of Dr. D. Russell Bailey, director of the Phillips Memorial Library at Providence College at the time of his death in 2020. The award honored a project that “best demonstrates effective use of data for the improvement of library collections, operations or services.” This article is about the project for which she won the award.

Communication Across The Electronic Resources Lifecycle: A Survey Of Academic Libraries, Jessica M. Morales, Christina A. Beis

The objective of this study was to identify common communication issues that arise during the electronic resource lifecycle and identify communication strategies academic libraries are using effectively to manage electronic resources. A survey of academic librarians and staff received 240 responses and included 5-point Likert scale ratings on communication surrounding acquisitions, access, administration, support, evaluation, and renewal at their institutions. The study found that the acquisitions, evaluation, and renewal stages of the lifecycle experienced the most issues in communication, while support had the most positive responses.
