Last week was a busy busy week. I had my first solo reference desk shift, as well as one day of filming! My first reference shift went really well. I had a few standard “do you have scissors” questions, but otherwise, real research questions! Initially it was nerve-wracking, but as I was able to successfully help the students, it became less so. This paper examines the textbook reserve collection at Queensborough Community College. Although the collection is heavily used in its current configuration, the library is looking for less labor intensive and less costly alternatives.

The cost of textbooks is skyrocketting. Textbooks are a major, unexpected bill for many students beginning college. Students and their family, used to having their textbooks provided or loaned free of charge at the start of the school year, face often large and unexpected bills when the first term begins. Many patrons do not even know libraries have map collections, let alone what kinds of maps are in them or how they could use those maps. Map displays and exhibits can help increase interest in map collections. Muriel Strickland wrote an article on casual map displays with the title "Map Displays: a Means of Promoting Map Use" in volume 17, number 3 of the WAML IB (June 1986). The Center for Social Sciences and Public Policy Research (CSSPPR) at Missouri State University was contracted by the Duane Meyer Library at Missouri State University to conduct a survey of MSU students and faculty concerning their use of and preference for library services. Separate online instruments were used for each of the two sample groups. In this study the CSSPPR measured the responses of a random sample of 266 MSU students and 60 MSU faculty members. Questions focused on the use of various library services and asked respondents to indicate their preferences for particular services. This report summarizes dominant trends …

San José State University’s (SJSU) Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Library implemented a patron-driven acquisition program on March 1, 2011 to make electronically available a wide collection of items without concurrency limits, meet users’ needs on a timely basis, and maximize the collections budget by purchasing materials as needed and selected by University users. In September 2011, SJSU’s Library implemented a simple widget that requested demographic data from its EBL users. Users identified their status (i.e., faculty, staff, or student) and area of discipline. Correlating these data points with EBL-usage statistics, SJSU librarians and staff have begun to question the …

This chapter explores the value of creating a mission statement to help redefine the academic library's curriculum center in the context of the current dynamic teacher education environment. The mission statement and related texts, such as vision, values, and guiding principle statements, define the purpose of the center for its constituents. It acts as a bridge between communities of practice and organizations, demonstrating the relationship of the center to the teacher education program, the academic library, and the college or university. This article discusses integrated approaches to the management and preservation of born digital photography. It examines the changing practices among photographers, and the needed relationships between the photographers using digital technology and the archivists responsible for acquiring their born digital images. Special consideration is given to technical issues surrounding preservation and access of image formats. It explores how integrated policies can enhance the success of managing born digital photographs in an academic setting and illustrates the benefits and challenges to acquisition, description, and dissemination of born digital photographs. In Fall 2009, the Leonard Lief Library of Lehman College developed a pilot e-reader and e-book lending program, making Lehman the first campus within the City University of New York (CUNY) to introduce these new services. The following article describes the project from a practical viewpoint, discussing e-reader and e-book vendor selection, user guides, training, lending logistics, and marketing, as well as other unanticipated challenges.

This paper reviews the literature of collection development and management from 2009 and 2010. Themes and trends reflect the profound effect of environmental forces on libraries, including the economic recession, changes in scholarly communication, and an increasingly networked environment. Libraries reduced print collections and moved them to storage or shared repositories and assessed collections to find efficiencies and demonstrate value. Research libraries moved away from collecting everything to mission-focused collecting, with an emphasis on unique collections. Collaboration across libraries, within institutions, and with non-library partners continued as a key management strategy. Nascent plans emerged to develop a national strategy for …

Creating workflows that involve the work of multiple departments within a large organization can be challenging, especially when the procedure itself is complex and involves a number of stakeholders. This paper describes and evaluates a collaborative project to develop an interdepartmental workflow for the digitization of unique library materials in a mid-sized academic library. The project includes an automated project management and materials tracking system. Project development involved three separate departments with different reporting channels. Librarian-faculty relations are essential to library collection development. This paper discusses, first of all, the reasons for the customary disconnect between librarians and faculty in light of their different priorities, visions, expertise, and status. In an attempt to bridge the librarian-faculty separation, a horizontal strategy is proposed focusing on financial collaborations between the library and other academic departments on campus, such as adopting the balanced budget, fair and rotated resource allocation, and prioritized investment through providing a General Reserve Fund. Licensed To Share: How Libraries Are Handling Electronic Journal Article Requests, Karen Okamoto

This questionnaire-based study examines how libraries are now handling electronic journal (e-journal) article requests in both lending and borrowing. With an increasing number of publishers and e-journal content providers permitting interlibrary loan (ILL) sharing, and with the availability of new license management tools and services, many respondents stated that they share e-journal articles. However, problems persist. Respondents cited is- sues such as restrictive licenses, automatic deflection of e-journal article requests, and the lack of information from libraries about what e-journal titles they are licensed to ILL.
