Finding Government Resources Online: A Webometric Study Of Selective Federal Depository Library Websites, Charity C. Park

Over eleven hundred libraries across the United States and its territories participate in the Federal Depository Library Program (FDLP) by providing public access to free government resources. In the last decade, there has been a significant shift as many government publications are being published only electronically. At the same time, several older physical collections are being digitized and made available online. This shift has caused many FDLP libraries to weed their older physical government document collections and increase their electronic holdings.

Hashtag Marbled Monday: A Webometric Analysis Of Academic Special Collections Outreach On Instagram, Carla Fulgham

SLIS Connecting

This study used webometric analysis to assess the most successful strategies for engaging Instagram users in academic special collections. Data were collected from five academic special collections Instagram accounts to analyze their activity during the month of April 2018. Data considered in the study include average number of likes per post, average number of hashtags per post, and most common hashtags and content. The results of this analysis may serve as a recommendation for best practices for academic special collections interested in, or already using Instagram as a platform, to engage students and other Instagram users in their collections.

Alumni Oral Histories: A Collaboration Between The Libraries And Development And Alumni Relations, Rebeccca Ciota

Collaborative Librarianship

This article describes a collaboration between Grinnell College’s libraries and its Office of Development and Alumni Relations on an oral history project in which college alumni are interviewed about their experiences at the college. Such close collaborations between development offices and libraries are rare. This collaboration was successful due to the equal participation of all parties.

Developed with input from a variety of library workers and industry representatives, this session will provide a current and concise introduction to the scholarly resource marketplace for academic libraries, highlighting the financial and functional connections between major market actors providing services and content to libraries.

Discussions of vendor relations in libraries have often focused on the interpersonal collaboration of library workers and vendor representatives. In the process, they have overlooked or neglected the connections between publishers and vendors, their parent corporations and subsidiary companies.

What should the relationship be between the purely Open Access publishers and librarians? Yes, in theory, among publishers these are publishers who are fully aligned with libraries to end the stranglehold which the traditional subscription publishers have on libraries. Yes, they are 100% attribution-only (CC-BY) publishers living up to the goals of Open Access (as described in the Budapest Open Access Initiative [BOAI]). But, are they just replacing over-priced subscriptions with over-priced APCs (Article Processing Charges)?

Preparing Researchers For Publishing Success: The Case Of Auburn University, George Stachokas

As part of a panel discussion organized by Dr. Gwen Taylor of Wiley, this paper reviews current efforts undertaken by Auburn University Libraries to support the research enterprise at Auburn University, including preparing researchers for publishing access. Despite financial constraints, Auburn University endeavors to transition from a Carnegie Classification of R2 to R1, add 500 new faculty members by 2022, and increase research output in STEM disciplines, agriculture, allied health sciences, and cybersecurity. Libraries, publishers, and intermediary vendors strive to disseminate the most current information to their patrons and clients through the metadata in their catalogs, services, and software. One significant pinch point in this landscape is the transfer of journals from one publisher to another. The Transfer Code of Practice was created to provide these stakeholders with guidelines to ensure that the transfer process occurs with minimal disruption and that journal content remains accessible to subscribers. In 2016, University of British Columbia Science Library liaisons met with the Math faculty to consider the value of switching their beloved print monograph series to online format. Arguments of greater discoverability, findability, and access won the faculty members, and they voted in acceptance of the change. In retrospect, persuading the Math faculty of the value in switching from print to online format was an easy win. The tough part came in transforming this pledge to reality. While a growing number of libraries are beginning to provide programs for individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), there is still a need for more, and there is a need for staff to become more aware of the types of behavior that are associated with ASD so as provide a better understanding of how to create programs.The purpose of this research is to evaluate the availability of ASD programs and community support among public libraries in Mississippi’s coastal region.

Mississippi, while it may be considered a rural area, contains cities along the Gulf of Mexico and other regions throughout the state that have a diverse population, which includes Hispanics. Libraries must be receptive to the communities they serve and must be aware of community demographics so that they may provide the necessary resources to accommodate them. Adolescent Minorities In Popular Ya Literature: A Content Analysis, Morgan Lee

Young adults are typically one of the most difficult target audiences for public libraries. Representation is important ‐ if a young reader cannot relate to the main character, they are likely not to care about what happens to them.The purpose of this study is to conduct a content analysis of popular YA novels published over the past decade to determine how often minorities are portrayed and how this portrayal has developed over time.

Engineering librarians need to assess the effectiveness of our library instruction and outreach for many reasons, including communicating library value to institutional stakeholders and making impactful contributions to the scholarly literature. However, as practitioners, most librarians have not been formally educated in research design, data collection, and data analysis. Literature illuminating the relationship between contemporary art and historical archives around the turn of the twenty-first century and how these interactions inform the evolution of archives in a digital multicultural age is the topic of this review. The literature reveals the extent to which art has been a means for members of marginalized groups to address their representation in historical archives, and also a means for archives to connect with a broader audience. On February 28, 2019, the University of California (UC) System announced the cancellation of their $50 million journal subscription deal with Elsevier. The impetus behind the UC decision comes from two issues. Firstly, the increasing costs of journal subscriptions in a landscape where library budgets remain flat. Secondly, the effort to shift the journal publishing model away from subscriptions to a sustainable open access model. The following paper will provide background on issues with the scholarly communication process, academic library budgets and open access initiatives.
