The TMC Library is happy to announce that a collection of books and DVDs from the Harris County Public Library has returned to our building. The TMC Library has partnered with Harris County Public Library since 2011, serving as a community outpost with books and DVDs plus offering hold pickup and return. The book collection departed from the TMC Library in 2017 because of renovations and is now back on site and updated for the TMC community.

JoVE – the Journal of Visualized Experiments – is a scientific video database that provides peer-reviewed, multidisciplinary protocols of laboratory experiments and techniques. Indexed in PubMed and Web of Science, JoVE also contains very basic and introductory education videos, suitable for students just learning their way around the lab, and graduates who need a refresher course in lab protocols.

Converting the online catalog to a cloud-based system. The library’s software-based catalog experienced technical issues whenever the hospital’s Information Technology department performed updates, and remote access to the system was not available. The authors describe the process of successfully converting the online catalog to a cloud-based system with remote access. It was critical for the library staff to preserve data from the former system. The initial step was to download the statistics from the former system to preserve them for future use. Objective: This poster examines how a Research and Instruction Librarian team at Rowland Medical Library updated and re-envisioned the library’s A to Z Database list. Methods: Two librarians worked to reimagine the format of the database descriptions provided on the A-Z Database page to include the relevant information users routinely requested. To this end, the librarians determined that each description should include alternative names, subjects, content categories, date range, icons, and vendor information. The reimagined descriptions removed extraneous vendor content that confused users and focused on information users could use to make quick determinations on which databases were best for …

OBJECTIVE In January 2020, the Library migrated to a new Library Management System (LMS), Ex Libris Alma and Primo, that combines the functionality of a discovery service and the features of a traditional catalog. The Library’s eBooks, which were previously only accessible via a discovery service, are now discoverable along with other library resources via one access point. The objective of this study is to measure eBook usage over the 2017-2020 period as one means of determining the effect of user access points on eBook usage.

This year’s sponsored, no holds barred health sciences lively lunchtime gathering was open to all. It began with greetings from luncheon sponsor, Rittenhouse. The moderator, Rena Lubker, introduced the session and provided introductory remarks about this year’s three presentations: a commentary on issues that keep us up at night; a report on considerations to make when leaving big deal licenses and entering into new, OA friendly arrangements; and more discussion about the impact of expansions on libraries of academic medical affiliation. A Reconsideration Of Library Treatment Of Ethically Questionable Medical Texts: The Case Of The Pernkopf Atlas Of Anatomy, Jamie Saragossi, Kathleen Kasten-Mutkus, Laurel Scheinfeld

The Pernkopf Atlas of Anatomy consists of anatomical drawings created by Austrian physician Eduard Pernkopf, an active member of the Nazi Party during World War II. While the book was known for its highly detailed anatomical drawings, in the 1990s it was determined that Holocaust victims were likely used as subjects for the drawings. Using a survey, the authors aimed to gather information about the presence of this monograph in academic libraries today to provide best practice recommendations for academic libraries in their approach to ethically questionable materials.

In the third year of medical undergraduate education, students are undergoing their core clinical rotations. During this period, exams in the core areas must be passed and therefore, access to relevant library resources is vital for successful completion. Background: In the development of a new institutional repository, library staff at a large health system were faced with building an organizational structure that would be meaningful to both internal and external users.
