Hackathons For Libraries And Librarians, Robin Camille Davis

Hackathons can be ideal opportunities for libraries and librarians to promote new services and tools. In these social events, attendees form teams and work on a project together within a given time limit. This article explains hackathons, provides a brief history, and details how libraries and librarians can get involved. Similar event structures, like hack days and edit-a-thons, are also considered.

A literature review by Lonsdale in 2003 observed that ‘a lack of systematically aggregated national data makes it difficult to gain an accurate picture of national trends in Australia in relation to the staffing of school libraries’ and noted ‘an apparent decline in the numbers of qualified teacher librarians employed in school libraries in public schools in Australia.’ This absence of data was also acknowledged in the 2011 report from the Inquiry of the House of Representatives Education and Employment Committee, which recommended a thorough workforce gap analysis of teacher librarians across Australian schools. Much has changed in libraries and society since the publication of the 2004 revision of the Nebraska Library Association Intellectual Freedom Manual. The consensus of the current members of the Nebraska Library Association round table on Intellectual Freedom (NLA IF) was not to just revise the former manual, but to create an entirely new edition. In doing so, the authors have addressed a number of new issues. The intention was to keep it relatively brief but still useful. "Why Are We Still Talking About Diversity?" Combatting Misconceptions In An Academic Library, Michael Mungin, Yasmeen Shorish

This poster will present the assessment and intervention activities of individuals at a mid-sized academic library with respect to diversity personnel initiatives. Each year, library employees complete a survey designed to gauge satisfaction and areas for improvement. Qualitative data suggest that library staff are confused about definitions of diversity and/or lack requisite buy-in and interest in initiatives that address diversity concerns. The activities and outcomes of an intervention to address these issues will be discussed.

This report lists the total amounts invoiced to the University of Rhode Island Libraries by the bibliographic utility OCLC during the fiscal year ending June 30, 2016.

Costs are broken down by invoice date and category and include all library locations (RIN, RIU, and RIX).

We pay three fixed monthly fees for each location: one for cataloging (FIX1002), one for interlibrary loan (FIX4500), and one for access (FIX6600).

Library staff employed in information technology departments are often seen as support staff, only providing services when something breaks. But what more can library IT staff do to support the mission of their libraries? In this presentation we will explore why library IT staff should maximize their ability to work across various library departments to collaboratively design new library services rather than being relegated to support staff. We will also explore how library IT staff may challenge traditional bureaucratic organization structures to lead change efforts.

Starting Over: Coding To Work With Alma After Voyager, Kathryn Lybarger

When the University of Kentucky was a Voyager library, I wrote a variety of tools to support our processes, ranging from tiny one-line macros to larger software packages. Now that we've migrated to Alma/Primo, everything has changed! Many of the ways I extended Voyager are part of Alma by default, and Alma's community (and available APIs) encourage even further development. In this presentation, I will describe some differences between the two systems, how they affected the types of support tools I wanted, and the ways I was able to create them.

Goal: To build a relationship between the libraries and athletics by connecting the Health Sciences Librarian and university athletics at James Madison University.

In the summer of 2015, the Associate Director of Strength and Conditioning approached the Health Sciences Librarian to discuss library support for their student interns.

A problem-based, information literacy instruction session was included in the didactic training of Strength and Conditioning interns. A collection of core journals and books was identified and developed. Access to these resources is facilitated through a guide tailored to the interdisciplinary nature of this population.

This study used a survey design to investigate the adoption of software packages in Nigerian university libraries. The study was guided by seven research questions. The population included all the 127 University Librarians in Nigerian university libraries; while the sample used for the study included 58 university librarians cutting across the six geopolitical zones in the country and reflecting the ownership status of federal, state and private universities. In 2014, the President of the University of Montana (UM) signed a resolution agreement with the Department of Education Office for Civil Rights regarding the accessibility of electronic and information technology (EIT) at UM. Since that time, we have been learning about accessibility and accessible technologies and have investigated the accessibility of EIT-based services at the Mansfield Library. We will share what we have learned about EIT accessibility; key results from our assessment of CONTENTdm; and a new cataloging initiative that improves the discoverability of accessible materials in library collections.
