Copyright Reform: Imagining More Balanced Copyright Laws, Michelle M. Wu

Earlier chapters of this book provide a history of copyright and libraries in the United States, a review of outdated language in the existing copyright code, and a discussion of actions by both copyright owners and the public to rebalance copyright outside of legislation. This chapter simply imagines what copyright could be if we disregard the known political and legal obstacles. It starts with no constraints, which one might argue is both impractical and foolish. Why spend time discussing what could be when treaties, self-interest, and powerful industry lobbies stand in the way?

Academic and public library collections are developed based on the needs of the communities that surround them. Technology has increased the way users access information, and the way libraries offer information to their users. However, the accessibility of electronic resources for users with print disabilities remains an issue that has yet to have an equitable remedy. This paper identifies the challenges of visually impaired users, the developments in law, the current state of accessibility in academic and public library collections policies, and the current formats and products that are leading the way.

In the spring of 2019, The South Carolina State Library and Charleston County Public Library each formed an Accessibility Team to identify and begin addressing accessibility issues in their libraries. Volunteers from diverse roles and departments participate in the teams so that together they can have a deeper impact. The teams have started making improvements and have established a process to bring positive change to their organizations.

Explores change in libraries from the point-of-view of a lifelong learner situated in space/time. Change itself occurs over time as debated in physics from Einstein until recently with Barbour and Smolin. Bergson’s ‘dureé’ performs work in understanding time as well as frames a context to understand time as change-of-state. Uses ‘the mind’ in place of the change scenario itself in order to promote a view by which a mind can self-critique and engage change. The price of textbooks and other learning materials hinder students’ ability to pursue higher education. Open educational resources (OER) provide one answer to this problem. Though well established in STEM disciplines, OER are less common in art history and other arts courses. The College Art Association (CAA) and the Art Libraries Society of North America (ARLIS/NA) hosted panels on OER at their 2019 annual conferences. This article summarizes those panels and analyzes the speakers’ experiences within the context of OER initiatives in higher education.

Purpose: This paper is a survey on the basis for libraries participation in Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activities in south east and south-south Nigeria. This paper seeks to unravel the reasons why libraries should engage in CSR activities. Design/ methodology/approach: The study adopted survey research method with questionnaire designed using four-point likert rating scale for data collection. Population of study comprise of librarians working in the university libraries selected from the south-east and south-south geo-political zone of Nigeria; a total of 129 questionnaires were retrieved and analyzed using descriptive statistics. This paper discussed the state of prison libraries and its services to the prison inmates in Nigeria. It takes a look at the collaboration of Nigerian Prisons Service with National Open University Nigeria (NOUN) and the NGOs. Problems that hinder the development of prison library services in Nigeria such as inadequate funding and space, difficulties in accessing information materials, and poor infrastructure, and poor collection management and management of prison by non-professionals, among others were examined. This paper analyzed the growth of open access institutional repositories in Nigeria over the last 10 years. OpenDoar website is a directory of all open access institutional repositories in the world. It is a quality-assured global directory that enables the identification, browsing and search for repositories. OpenDoar was analyzed to get statistics of institutional repositories in Nigeria based on such parameters as: Type, Status, software, total number of records, subject covered and content uploaded. This presentation to Library of Congress staff, delivered onsite on January 10, 2020, presents a tour through the demonstration project pursued by the Aida digital libraries research team with the Library of Congress in 2019-2020. In addition to providing an overview and analysis of the specific machine learning projects scoped and explored, this presentation includes a number of high-level take-aways and recommendations designed to influence and inform the Library of Congress's machine learning efforts going forward.

This paper highlighted on the public library’s role in the society as a focal point for local economic development, adapted to the West Bengal. It proposes a re-focusing of public libraries towards the idea of an information centre, to contribute towards local economic development by satisfying the information needs of citizens, small businesses, new entrepreneurs and community institution. Libraries need to challenge their perceptions to meet the needs of all users. From our national mixed-methods survey on the status of United States academic libraries’ reference services (260 respondents) we received 40 responses from libraries in New Jersey. This presentation seeks to compare the current reference models and perceptions of librarians in New Jersey with those around the country, based on our survey results. We will highlight strengths and weaknesses of New Jersey librarian attitudes towards reference as well as the steps we can take to do better. Attendees will be invited to join the conversation using interactive technology.

The following is a revised protocol based on assessment of the birds of a feather session held as part of University Libraries Convocation, 11 August 2020. The session was held in response to staff concerns about prioritization and workflow management during the COVID-19 pandemic, and was held over Zoom.

This was a peer-led session that was not affiliated with any organizational prioritization efforts or budget conversations. It is recommended that anyone wishing to replicate the session consider the power dynamics between facilitator and attendee, and revise as necessary to best fit your organizational context.
