The authors review changes in the standards for measuring electronic resources through an examination of the 1990-2000 IPEDS Academic Library Survey forms. During that decade, academic libraries have moved from counting electronic resources by the number of bibliographic and physical units to measuring usage. Local attempts to capture electronic resource usage are described.

For more than a decade, the cost of print and electronic journals, particularly in the sciences, has increased rapidly at the same time that the amount of research being reported via published articles has grown exponentially. With academic libraries being less and less able to purchase the journals needed for their communities, the use of the term scholarly communication has evolved to illustrate the breakdown of the process of traditional scholarly publication; that is, as a means to disseminate research results, the present system of scholarly communication can no longer meet the needs of the scholarly community at large.

Thanks to a grant funded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services, the Special Collections Department of LSU Libraries and the LSU digital library have been digitizing, cataloging, and making available via the World Wide Web selected documents and publications from the era of the Louisiana Purchase held by LSU and the New Orleans City Archives. A goal of the grant was to enhance K-12 teaching and learning by working with Louisiana teachers to integrate the use of the digital collection into their classroom activities. Resources And Services For Remote Access: A Content Analysis Of Alabama’S Public Four-Year University Library Web Sites, Hanrong Wang, William Hubbard

The Southeastern Librarian

This study examines the web sites of the sixteen Alabama public senior colleges and universities in order to identify the principle characteristics and current trends in web-based services. Because web sites are evolving constantly, the study intends to make a static comparison of web-based resources and services provided by those libraries at a fixed point in time. Besides identifying trends in library web sites, this study will serve as a benchmark for comparisons of future web-based developments and for improving existing services and resources in the subject libraries.
