Our lives are continuously affected by the information that we encounter in ever-increasing volume. The growing awareness of the dangers of uncritical information consumption (e.g. “fake news”) heightens the relevancy of questions investigating the nature of truth and fact. This anxiety manifests on a more personal level in terms of our vulnerable digital selves—identities can be stolen, personal archives can be lost. Anxiety is deeply personal but can affect public lives, professional lives, teaching, and scholarship as it leads to a loss of nuance and an unwillingness to participate in information creation and exchange. This paper provides an overview of Keller's attention, relevance, confidence and satisfaction model of motivational design and reveals that there are several areas librarians may investigate to improve the profession's understanding of students' motivation in developing their information literacy abilities.

Mapping The Association Of College And Research Libraries Information Literacy Framework And Nursing Professional Standards Onto An Assessment Rubric, Gloria Willson, Katelyn Angell

Objective: The authors developed a rubric for assessing undergraduate nursing research papers for information literacy skills critical to their development as researchers and health professionals.

Methods: We developed a rubric mapping six American Nurses Association professional standards onto six related concepts of the Association of College & Research Libraries (ACRL) Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education. We used this rubric to evaluate fifty student research papers and assess inter-rater reliability.

Results: Students tended to score highest on the “Information Has Value” dimension and lowest on the “Scholarship as Conversation” dimension. However, we found a discrepancy between the grading patterns …

Social justice is a critical component of information literacy (IL). As librarians we have an obligation to critique the power structures that control information. Instruction librarians at four medium to large, private, Catholic institutions; collaborated to develop IL instruction grounded in social justice. The project involved applying a social justice construct to IL; creating lesson plans and instructional strategies; assessment; and sharing lessons in an open access database.

Presentations

Building on recently published research, an academic librarian and art professor facilitate the design and creation of visual and text pieces that illustrate information literacy terms’ meanings. This informational campaign uses data from a large-scale assessment of student comprehension of terms used in library instruction and syllabi. It offers an innovative way to teach students the language they need to be effective researchers, while detailing a library-art department collaboration that gives students a real-world learning experience.

Many institutions overwhelm the first year seminar with “one-shot” library instruction sessions, which are not necessarily linked to any form of assignment or assessment. So how can librarians maintain information literacy instruction throughout a student's academic career? Data collected by the Rivier University librarians showcases the ability to implement information literacy more effectively by streamlining and leveling it out over a four-year period.

In order to effectively access and utilize the resources of the academic library and to become information literate, students must understand the language of information literacy. This study analyzes undergraduate students’ understanding of fourteen commonly used information literacy terms. It was found that some of the terms least understood by students are those most frequently found in faculty-created research assignments and syllabi and which are used by librarians during library instruction. It is recommended that librarians work with faculty to make them aware of students’ lack of understanding of information literacy terms and that librarians also reinforce their meaning during …

Expanding Support For Graduate Students: Library Workshops On Research Funding Opportunities, Carrie L. Forbes, Gina Schlesselman-Tarango, Peggy Keeran

This case study describes the development, implementation, and assessment of a series of grants research workshops for graduate students, which were implemented to fill a gap in graduate student support. We assessed the workshops through a series of focus groups, and findings show overall satisfaction with the grants tools and workshop. However, participants noted areas of improvement around outreach and promotion and general communication with graduate students. Additional themes emerged related to graduate student socialization and research behaviors, which suggests that librarians have an important role to serve in these areas.

Search Strategy Development In A Flipped Library Classroom: A Student-Focused Assessment, Michael C. Goates, Gregory M. Nelson, Megan Frost

Librarians at Brigham Young University compared search statement development between traditional lecture and flipped instruction sessions. Students in lecture sessions scored significantly higher on developing search statements than those in flipped sessions. However, student evaluations show a strong preference for pedagogies that incorporate elements from both lecture and flipped methodologies. Reasons for lower flipped-session scores may include a lack of student accountability, strong preference for a live demonstration, and disconnections between online tutorial content and in-class collaborative activities. Librarians using a flipped classroom should consider ways to help students make meaningful connections between online tutorials and in-class activities.

What High School Students Want To Know About Music: An Information Literacy Instruction Course For A High School Music Camp, Michael J. Duffy Iv

This program will present the results of a case study of an information literacy course offered to high school students during the SEMINAR High School Summer Music Camp at Western Michigan University in July of 2016. The curriculum of the course is geared toward the Standards for the 21st-Century Learner, the information literacy standards of the American Association of School Librarians for grades K-12, and informed by the MLA Information Literacy Instructional Objectives for Undergraduate Music Students. Purpose

This paper aims to provide academic instruction librarians with a model for integrating concepts from the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) Framework into “one-shot” library instruction sessions without losing the practical experience of searching the library resources.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors adapted the Cephalonian method as the structure of first-year library instruction sessions for an English composition class. The sessions were re-designed to emphasize the core concepts of information literacy while incorporating active learning activities and discussion.
