Supporting Inquiry By Identifying Gaps In Student Confidence: Development Of A Measure Of Perceived Competence, Marilyn P. Arnone, Ruth V. Small, Rebecca Reynolds

Critical to inquiry-based learning is information literacy. Educators can enhance students’ experiences during the inquiry process if they are aware of the skill areas in which students either have or lack confidence. This article describes the development and psychometric properties of the Perceived Competence in Information Skills (PCIS) measure. Educators can use the measure to support student inquiry by identifying and addressing gaps in student confidence. The measure is freely available through Syracuse University’s Center for Digital Literacy.

The motivation for this study came from a desire to improve teaching of the use of accounting information for decision making. The information literacy standards and related performance indicators guided the development of a semester-long case study by accounting faculty and academic business librarians. Their collaboration yielded a series of instruction modules and related student exercises leading up to a group activity involving the evaluation of a company as a potential investment for retirement savings. Students enrolled in two sections of an introductory accounting course volunteered to participate in this study. They provided information about their knowledge before and after …

This lesson plan aims to encourage students to think critically about this important component of information literacy, and provides a foundation for beginning college students to build upon as they progress through college and on to their careers.

This presentation is a review of reports on information literacy and the workforce. There is a substantial body of literature on information literacy in K-16 educational settings, but there is much less literature on implications for the workplace and job-related lifelong learning. The topical categories of the reports are: the importance of information literacy for the workforce; how information literacy differs in work and educational settings; and barriers to information literacy in the workplace. The presentation concludes with recommendations for practice and for further research.

Solving The Rubrics Cube: Using Assessment To Sharpen Library Instruction, Elisa Acosta, Susan Gardner

Loyola Marymount University's (LMU) Reference Department designed a rubric to measure student learning outcomes for freshman English. Students sequentially completed an "English 110 Library Research Worksheet” during library instruction. The rubric which is set up to analyze learning outcomes from parts of the ACRL Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education is applied to collected student worksheets. The Department undertook a multi-step process to try to calibrate the rubric and achieve consensus estimates of inter-rater reliability. Many institutions of higher education are designing spaces to facilitate learning. Libraries have created information or learning commons to support this activity. This article draws from the literature and best practices to explore this new direction. Academic libraries have focused on student learning and the teaching of skills and strategies that develop information literacy competency. Although there is an assumption that learning commons facilitate student learning, there is a need to more closely connect this new environment with information literacy and pedagogy and to demonstrate its merits in enhancing learning. This editorial discusses the need for the library profession to promote information literacy in the workforce of their own libraries. There are growing concerns among employers in the general public about the preparation of employees for the demands of 21st century jobs. Although the library profession has led the development and promotion of information literacy in educational settings, there is little evidence in the literature that libraries foster information literacy in their employees, If library organizations support an information literacy workforce, the library can become a model, showing parent organizations the power of information literacy in the work environment.

This editorial questions why information literacy is not yet fully integrated in educational programs and issues a call to action. There is evidence that the way that things have been done in the past to accomplish this is not working. The article advocates for using results of studies such as Project Information Literacy to motivate new, non-traditional ways of thinking about the problem.

Instruction module:

Circumstances of the Instruction: This module is based on a collaborative effort between a college librarian working with two 11 111 grade Advanced Placement (AP) History and English teachers. Students are enrolled in both the English and History classes, making collaboration and curriculum coordination easier. An instructional librarian working in concert with classroom faculty is beneficial to students because many teachers are not fully aware of recent trends such as information storage and retrieval systems and Web-based search tools. Students taking this module are intelligent, score well on standardized aptitude tests, and receive better than average grades. Still, …

The authors describe the use of case studies in a program of extracurricular library instruction and explain the benefits of case teaching in developing information literacy. The paper presents details of example cases and analyzes surveys to evaluate the impact of case teaching on student satisfaction.

We argue that all knowledge begins with the body, the physical space it occupies and the territory an individual defines as “home.” The taken-for-granted nature of this reality is disrupted by the experience of moving into a new cultural space, whether this space is defined physically or in discursive terms. Cultural space is an extension of personal identity, both the physical circumstances through which individual consciousness is shaped, and the conceptual connections through which individuals construct a vantage point in the world.
