Leadership Styles As Correlate Of Job Performance In Academic Libraries In Delta State, Nigeria, Flora Orewa

The level of managerial input from the leadership of any organisation could directly translate into the library employees’ performance. The paper examined the role of leadership style on the performance of academic library staff in Delta State. Five academic libraries (polytechnic, college and university) were purposively selected using a sample size of 94 which was randomly drawn. A combination of the Oates leadership measurement and MLQ 5X scales were adapted to draw inferences on the leadership tendencies of the librarians. In order to understand current trends and use of social media in libraries, VCU Libraries created and conducted an online survey using SurveyMonkey. Our approach was informed by the study of social media and public relations practice conducted by Wright and Hinson (Wright, Donald K. and Michelle Drifka Hinson. 2015. “Examining Social and Emerging Media Use in Public Relations Practice: A Ten-Year Longitudinal Analysis.” Public Relations Journal 9).

This work is on information literacy for effective utilization of information resources in academic libraries in Nigeria. Four hundred copies of questionnaire were administered to students of four academic institutions- Federal University of Technology Owerri Imo State, Imo State University, Federal Polytechnic Nekede and Alvan Ikoku Federal College of Education. This study was necessitated by an attempt to find out the nursing students’ level of satisfaction with library services in selected universities in Edo State. Descriptive survey research design was adopted. The population of the study comprised all the 100 to 500 level Nursing undergraduates in selected universities. Accidental sampling techniques was used to draw a sample size of two hundred (200), one hundred and nine three (193) copies were retrieved and analyzed using simple percentage, mean and standard deviation. The major objectives of the study were to determine publication output of the professional librarians and investigate the challenges confronting publication efforts of the professional librarians, among others. Rowan University achieved the R3 Carnegie Classification in 2013 resulting in significant changes in strategic hires and investment of funds to support its newfound research mission. The institution has seen rapid growth as well from about 14000 students in 2013 to 18000 students in 2018. Print journals collection development is a long-standing academic library role, whose support of university curriculum and research is essential. However, academic libraries have weathered difficult collection development decisions due to costs and strained budgets. As technology has given rise to online journals and space is reallocated, libraries have shifted focus to online journals. In addition, some academic libraries select open access journals to supplement subscriptions, but lack criteria. Furthermore, academic libraries are challenged by some open access journals’ predatory practices, unreliable access, and lacking peer review. This article explores academic libraries’ open access journals collection development and provides a blueprint.

The college campus is a complex ecosystem of services and resources. Academic library outreach efforts offered in partnership with Student Affairs units can support the whole student as they navigate this ecosystem. This presentation offers one librarian's experience collaborating with Student Affairs units such as health, counseling, and recreation centers. A mental model for this work that draws on the metaphor of organic gardening helps frame the remarks and reflections.

Makerspaces present unique possibilities for creative partnerships within libraries, including the opportunity for interdisciplinary use of emerging technologies with archival objects and primary sources. One example of this type of interdisciplinary collaboration is the fabrication of cultural heritage replicas via 3D scanning and printing of historical university objects in academic libraries. This article describes how four librarians contributed to the founding and first-year activities of a multidisciplinary research institute at a regional comprehensive university. The Institute of Cannabis Research (ICR) is the first multidisciplinary research institute on cannabis, an emerging and often controversial field. As faculty representatives on the institute’s steering committee and working groups, librarians were able to leverage interdisciplinary expertise to assist in organizing and disseminating cannabis research. Examples of the reciprocal benefit to both the institution and the library are shared.

Using intersectionality as a framework, this edited collection explores the experiences of women of color in library and information science (LIS). With roots in black feminism and critical race theory, intersectionality studies the ways in which multiple social and cultural identities impact individual experience.
