As digital library managers, we know our collections contain rich metadata, but data (or metadata) are encapsulated in these records and are accessible to users only when records containing them are retrieved in a search. This approach for managing data, although a common practice that extends far beyond digital collections, creates silos of data. Data associated with records is isolated and does not directly link to related data existing in other records. These silos hide valuable relationships among data, leaving to users the task of discovering these hidden connections.

More than a transitory historical phase, these changes represents a fundamental transition between paradigms (Kuhn, 1962). Academic libraries and librarianship are moving from a paradigm focused on collections and books to a paradigm focused on learning. Library leaders and professional organizations have for some time viewed increased diversity in the library profession as a positive goal. However, the ALA Office for Research & Statistics reports that fewer than 12% of ALA members responding to a 2012 demographic survey self-selected their race/family origin as non-White. This program will look at the various strategies being employed to increase diversity in the library profession and to assess the success of those efforts.

Where Do We Go From Here?: Informing Academic Library Staffing Through Reference Transaction Analysis, Bradley Wade Bishop, Jennifer A. Bartlett

This study conducted a systematic sample of every 70th reference transaction from over a three-year period and analyzed 1,852 reference transactions asked at an academic library system's fifteen f2f service points as well as via telephone, e-mail, and chat. Findings indicate two-thirds of the total questions asked were location-based questions about the library. Also, 80.2 percent of location-based questions and 77.2 percent of subject-based questions were asked f2f. Analysis of location-based reference questions informs effective deployment of librarians and staff at library service points as well as the development of mobile library apps.

Singapore Management University’s Li Ka Shing Library was designed in 2002 and built prior to 2005. It was officially opened in 2006 as part of a brand new university in the city with the two Singapore cultural icons on each side, the Singapore Art Museum and the Singapore National Museum overlooking the Campus Green with its heritage trees. The six storey building houses the library that occupies four storeys, with levels one and two housing various businesses, cafes and restaurants and other campus facilities. Reenvisioning Access Services: A Survey Of Access Services Departments In Arl Libraries, Duane E Wilson

In spring 2012 a study was undertaken to investigate the current structure of Access Services in ARL Libraries and to understand current and future trends in departmental organization and cross-training. The survey determined that Access Services Departments in ARL Libraries typically contain a core set of services, though their structure is based on local needs. Most ARL Libraries have not experimented with combining reference and circulation functions and have only begun to consolidate traditional Access Services areas at single service points. The author recommends that Access Services be organized around a public services point instead of organizing the department around …

The changing research and information environment requires a reexamination of library support for research. This study considers research-related attitudes and practices to identify elements indicating readiness or resistance to expanding the library’s role in research support. A survey of faculty conducted at the University of Nevada Las Vegas (UNLV) finds that although a high percentage of faculty rate the library as important or very important to research productivity, perceived importance of specific support functions drops markedly, except for functions related to buying or providing access to resources.

Returning students - those with a significant lapse in time during their formal education - make up a large and growing percentage of the student population at Portland State University (PSU). Over 40% of PSU undergraduates are over 26 years of age and 21% of graduate students over 39. Given returning students’ experiences in the work force, motivations for learning, and the lapse of time since conducting academic research, returning students may approach research differently than traditional students. This article is a case study of a collaboration between the Oregon Multicultural Archives of Oregon State University, Portland State University Library's Special Collections, the Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association (CCBA), and the Northwest News Network to preserve and make accessible a recovered box of Oregon Chinese disinterment documents. By examining what influenced and engaged each partner, this case study offers an opportunity to better understand the motivations of diverse stakeholders in a "post-custodial era" project that challenges traditional practices of custody, control, and access.

The iSkills assessment is an hour-long, web-based simulation developed by ETS to measure ICT literacy skills of students from grades 10 through adulthood. In this study, the authors will compare the assessment scores of students majoring in teacher education (with junior-year status) at an urban commuter campus (UNLV) and a traditional residential campus (BYU). Controlling for demographic factors and GPA, the authors will focus on curricular elements in the respective teacher education programs that may contribute to the college students' test scores. This panel session asks why is hybrid open access important? Scholarly publishers have responded to the OA movement by offering authors the choice of publishing their articles as Open Access (using an author pays funding mechanism) in subscription journals. The study surveys eight publishers to explore a number of questions about the mechanics, implementation, price impacts, and author tracking of this model; and investigates the uptake at two research institutions, with one operating in a NIH Public Access Policy environment.
