Toxic Medicines Exhibit, Kelsey Koym

The medicines used for the Toxic Medicines and Toxic Books exhibit were selected based on their historical use to treat various ailments and diseases; however, these treatments are now known today to be quite harmful to human health. It is important to remember that the ideology around how the body works and how to treat disease has greatly changed over the last several centuries.

Cognitive Apprenticeship Strategies For The Media Literacy Classroom, Nate Floyd, Jaclyn Spraetz

Communications in Information Literacy

Inspired by the apprenticeship model of teaching and learning, two instructors report on their efforts to place current events at the center of a semester-long media and information literacy course. They discuss strategies to harness curiosity about contemporary topics (e.g., misinformation, climate change, algorithms, right-to-repair, blockchain, artificial intelligence, etc.), and create engagement-driven course content. The paper provides concrete examples of activities and assignments used to situate learning in real-world contexts and build students' confidence in navigating information independently. This case study offers insights for other educators seeking to apply cognitive apprenticeship principles to media and information literacy instruction.

The process of determining whether a source of information is relevant is multidimensional, dynamic, and subjective. This essay puts information science scholarship on relevance, including the process and nature of making relevance judgments, in conversation with models of teaching and learning information literacy. Teaching librarians are encouraged to recognize students’ relevance judgments as sites of reflection and instruction. This essay suggests a variety of ways librarians might do this, from re-thinking source evaluation methods to emphasizing the opportunities available at the source selection stage. Five Newly Processed Dentistry Collections, Arthur Fowler

Five dental collections have been processed and are now available for research at the McGovern Historical Center collection search site.

These collections were processed by Arthur Fowler, while interning at the McGovern Historical Center this summer. These collections are almost 12 cubic feet of material. Materials included books, scrapbooks, papers, ephemera, plaques, and personal items belonging to dental professionals spanning 110 years from 1902 to 2012.

Creating A Homemade Mobile Augmented Reality Game In A Community College Library: An Open Source Approach, Carrie Jedlicka, Mark E. Eaton

Librarians at Kingsborough Community College created a mobile augmented reality activity for new students, to orient them to the library space and to provide a fun, welcoming experience. Rather than using a commercial app, the librarians built the activity using open source tools and resources already at-hand, specifically AR.js and A-Frame (both JavaScript libraries), and LibGuides. Based on student feedback, librarians found that participants enjoyed the activity and that it helped familiarize them with library locations and services. This project demonstrates that librarians have the capacity to build their own open source augmented reality activities in-house.

Creating resources that facilitate the preservation of community-based archives and ecological knowledge in the Louisiana coastal region is integral to its survival amongst the effects of climate change. At Minnesota State University, Mankato, we’ve undertaken several experiments and initiatives focused on Generative Artificial Intelligence. We provided several examples at the Generative AI in Libraries (GAIL) conference. For this presentation, we provided a revised and expanded overview of our initiatives for the Northern Ohio Technical Services Librarians (NOTSL) Fall General Meeting. We explained license-related restrictions on uses of AI. We discussed the limitations of the retrieval-augmented generation tools currently available in the library. We summarized how we’ve tested ChatBots to support licensing and we showed how we’ve tried to use AI to improve data visualization for collections outreach. We …

Introduction: Academic liaison librarians play a pivotal role in supporting graduate students with their scholarly endeavors, particularly research dissemination. Researcher profile systems (RPSs) are important for promoting academic work; they ensure name attribution and facilitate research distribution. Academic librarians are advocates of these systems and provide support and instruction for them. This article reports on a pre–post survey evaluating a library workshop on RPSs for graduate students, as well as the changes made to the workshop based on the results of the survey.

National parks and protected wilderness areas provide benefits through leisure activities to many. Yet, many people with disabilities are unable to experience these benefits because of barriers. Therefore, it is important to understand how to improve access to these spaces for people with disabilities. The objective of this study is to identify barriers and facilitators to accessibility in national parks and protected natural areas. Using a scoping review methodology, we searched eighteen academic databases and found 44 sources meeting our eligibility criteria. The rapid growth of research data and its influence on research practices have led to an increased recognition of the importance of research data governance (RDG) worldwide. Nevertheless, a lack of literature explicitly delineates RDG implementation, and practices undertaken by research performing organizations (RPOs). This study sought to fill the existing gap in the literature by exploring the implementation and practices of RDG by RPOs within a post-positivist research paradigm. Seeing a need for more structured mentorship in library professional development, an internship supervisor created a reading guide for her interns at a mid-sized public university. The librarian and the first four interns who used the guide as part of their internship describe their experiences with this new reading program. Besides enabling the discovery of interesting articles and videos, we hope that the focus on professional development will encourage internship supervisors to include explicit mentorship in professional development and encourage interns to ask for more support in developing this crucial practice.

Helping Our Graduate Students Soar: Promoting Scholarship And Populating Our Institutional Repository, Elaine Wells

The author describes how a requirement that our graduate students deposit theses and dissertations into our institutional repository (SOAR) helped to build our online scholarship, educate and strengthen graduate students’ identities as scholars, and forge relationships with the library. Taking advantage of the synergy brought about by a new open access policy, a robust digital repository, and library staff committed to advancing accessible scholarly works, we developed ways to educate, encourage, and promote our newest scholars. Based upon our success thus far, we will develop workshops and tutorials that will be extended to junior faculty to advance their scholarly success.

In recent years, the traditional use of digital collections simply as proxies for the physical has shifted to a paradigm of viewing collections as data suitable for computational use and novel research methods. A metadata strategy with robust description can provide access and inspire new contextual narratives and knowledge. The presenters saw great potential for a collections as data exploration in a significant World War I archival collection to highlight lesser-known stories, including those of the Pioneer Infantry, women, and noncombatants.

Bite-Size Market Research Tools: Micro Surveys And Usability Studies, Mark Aaron Polger

Library marketing activities should always be informed with user data. When conducting market research, you don't need a large sample to see the "big" picture. Developing scalable micro assessments such as mini surveys, usability studies, interviews, and focus groups with only a few questions can add value to your library's marketing and outreach efforts. With quantitative research, you are expected to have a large sample. However, that is not the case when conducting market research. In this presentation, micro assessments will be shown to be more effective, easier to manage, and garners more responses than more lengthier surveys.

Evaluation Of Undergraduate Research Topic Skill Development, Vanessa Arce, Katelyn Angell

Inspired by the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy frame Research as Inquiry, Lehman College Library conducted an assessment to measure its undergraduate students’ ability to formulate research questions that are appropriately scaled, encourage critical inquiry, and can be supported by available information resources. Using a sample of first-year students enrolled in an English composition class, the assessment revealed that students performed best at locating information resources and struggled most with scaling down a topic. Lessons learned from this study can be extrapolated to outside institutions to improve information literacy learning outcomes.
