HCA Healthcare Scholarly Commons is the institutional repository for HCA Healthcare Graduate Medical Education programs. Utilizing the bepress Digital Commons platform, our repository houses scholarly works from over 300 residency and fellowship programs at 66 teaching hospitals nationwide. The Scholars Workshop course addresses biostatistics, epidemiology, quality and patient safety, health care disparities, research, research ethics, and other related topics. The CARE data principles (Collective benefit, Authority to control, Responsibility, and Ethics) are a conceptual framework meant to ensure ethical collection, sharing, and stewardship of Indigenous data. As part of a workshop hosted by the Data Curation Network in 2022, librarians created a foundational data curation primer on the CARE data principles and how they apply to data management, curation, and sharing. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses literature search extension (PRISMA-S) outlines full reporting of the search strategy component including uploading documentation of all search strategies into a data repository to increase accessibility, transparency, and reproducibility. In response to the PRISMA-S recommendations, Canadian universities and health care institutions have been increasingly offering local services for librarians to support depositing and sharing search strategies in a digital data repository on the Borealis platform. Problem/Scenario: The coordinators of our institution's 2023 Scientific Day event wanted to allow attendees to cast votes for a new Fan Favorite poster award and they asked library staff for help in making this possible. Library staff maintain the institutional repository (IR) for our large health care system, and posters from Scientific Day are deposited in the IR so they are visible to judges and attendees during the virtual event. Before sharing clinical data, personal and sensitive information must be removed or de-identified. The NLM Scrubber is a clinical text de-identification tool developed by the National Library of Medicine. This session will give a brief introduction to different branches of AI. Natural language processing (NLP) is one such branch of AI that combines linguistics and computer science to make human language understandable to computers. The NLM Scrubber uses NLP to identify personally identifying information and replace it with generic terms. After Digital Commons'™ Expert Gallery Suite eliminated some functionality, institutional repository (IR) staff began the process of exploring other author profile platforms that would align with essential workflows. Elsevier's™ Pure rose to the top of compatible and robust platforms suitable to replace our previous solution.

One such surprising change came from a project aimed at decreasing period poverty. The Period Equity Movement (PEM) was created in collaboration with the university’s Office of Student Wellness and Health Promotion through funding that came from a $48,000 Sustainability Fee grant and other internal funding. Studies show pleasure reading results in academic benefits but declines between elementary and secondary years. The question addressed is “what are the experiences in the lives of juniors (aged 16-18) that foster intrinsic motivation to read for pleasure?” Juniors from four mid-western U.S. schools with varied ethnic and socio-economic profiles were identified as highly and distinctly intrinsically motivated for pleasure reading. Interviews revealed participants excelled academically and had family members who were readers. They read to escape stress, occupy time, and investigate careers. Rarely reading for rewards, they were “opportunistic readers.” Relationships with librarians were important in finding good books …

This article describes a complex CRIS (current research information system) implementation project involving the migration of around 120,000 legacy publication records from three different systems. The project, undertaken by Tampere University, encountered several challenges in data diversity, data quality, and resource allocation. To handle the extensive and heterogenous dataset, innovative approaches such as machine learning techniques and various data wrangling tools were used to process data, correct errors, and merge information from different sources. Despite significant delays and unforeseen obstacles, the project was ultimately successful in achieving its goals. The project served as a valuable learning experience, highlighting the importance …

The study explored research data management readiness at the Uganda Cancer Institute. Its objectives were to; establish the state of research data and the institutional readiness for research data management practices. The case study applied a survey method using a questionnaire modified from the Data Asset Framework and the Community Capability Model Framework. The respondents were 60 staff members at different professional levels purposively selected. The findings show massive data generated from clinical trials, and routine cancer clinics at the institute. Many libraries have uncataloged collections or backlogs which could benefit from batch processing, but little guidance exists on how to conceptualize and plan such a project. I will share a framework I developed which categorizes types of batch cataloging projects and outlines the steps involved. I will also describe four projects we've done at JMU to illustrate how the framework can be applied to design a variety of metadata workflows.
