A Party Platter Of Peer-Reviewed Oer Assignments, Elizabeth Jardine, Ece Aykol, Justin Rogers-Cooper

Many colleges and universities have adopted core competencies during the last two decades. Their adoption reflects larger national trends in outcomes assessment, teaching and learning, and regional accreditation. Faculty at LaGuardia Community College sought model assignments with reflections on their design that speak to the college’s core competencies— integrative learning, inquiry and problem-solving, and global learning—and the communication abilities that students use to express them—written, oral, and digital communication abilities. In response, the college’s assessment leaders looked to the assignment library created by the National Institute for Learning Outcomes Assessment (NILOA) for inspiration. Access to online archival materials has become vital for many academic historians and other researchers. The COVID-19 global pandemic has aimed the spotlight on the digital archival collections hosted by archives institutions and available through the web. In light of this increased role of digital archival collections, it is imperative for archivists to gain a better understanding of academic historians’ perceptions of these materials. Hiring Student Workers As Subject Experts In Archives: A Case Study, Laura Romans

This article aims to share a successful experience of addressing a known knowledge gap within a special collections department by hiring and retaining a student worker with the needed content expertise. Outlined are the details of the lifecycle of the initial project for which the student was hired and reflections on the pros and cons of this mutually beneficial arrangement. By describing this experience in full, this case study can serve as a replicable model for managers within archives and special collections settings to intentionally hire student workers with advanced content knowledge.

Wikipedia And Scholarpedia: A Comparative Case Study And Its Implications To Information Literacy, Junli Diao, Stefka Tzanova, Anthony Bishop

The free online Wikipedia receives increasing attention from academic librarians; however, its counterpart Scholarpedia seems to be neglected. This case study selected two articles bearing the same title Intentionality from Scholarpedia and Wikipedia and brought them under scrutiny of their microstructure and macrostructure. Both microstructure and macrostructure analysis indicated that the addressed readership of the two encyclopedic articles is understandably different in terms of readability and content. The comparative case study concluded with empirical implications that both online, free encyclopedias provide academic librarians with pedagogical instruments to help students engage in authentic knowledge construction.

The John Earl Cutler, MD papers contains 5 ledgers and some loose business-related papers, including two ledger books in which Dr. Cutler recorded patient fees and fees he paid to suppliers. The ledgers cover the years 1918 to 1922. Dr. Cutler recorded the names of his patients and the companies that paid for his services. He also recorded the drugs dispensed and the cost. He rarely mentions symptoms, which he treats. There are some loose receipts for repairs to Dr. Cutler's Franklin automobile and purchases from drug wholesalers. See more at MS 116.

© 2021, Medical Library Association. All rights reserved. The Medical Library Association (MLA) appointed a Diversity and Inclusion Task Force (DITF) in 2017. Sandra G. Franklin, AHIP, FMLA, chaired the task force and guided initiatives. From 2017 to 2020, the task force completed a review of MLA defining documents—including the mission, vision, values, and code of ethics— resulting in language updates to these documents. As MLA transitioned through the communities process, the DITF contributed to the transition. Hand On The Net: Helping Land Job Candidates For Liaison Departments, John Glover

VCU Libraries Faculty and Staff Publications

Academic library liaisons can uniquely support job searches carried out by their liaison units. This support is a service to the liaison unit, as well as an opportunity to deepen relationships with faculty, staff, and students affiliated with those units. Interactions with candidates afford opportunity to communicate with candidates from many different institutions, providing valuable exchanges of information. Finally, this kind of support inevitably leads to new or strengthened internal communication at the liaison's library.

Libraries face a significant challenge in keeping users, and sometimes even
their own employees, informed and up-to-date about their ever-changing services and resources. A library e-newsletter is one way of effectively communicating updates to a large number of people on a regular basis, serving as both an internal and external communication tool. To do this, it is important to establish a collaborative model that is sustainable, can be assessed, and meets readership needs. Aligning the newsletter with the library’s mission and strategic plan is an effective approach for communications with an academic library community.

Adapting An Hbcu-Inspired Framework For Black Student Success In U.S. Lis Education, Ana Ndumu, Shaundra Walker

This perspective essay explores Gasman & Arroyo’s (2014) HBCU-inspired framework for Black student success as a prism for re-envisioning LIS education. In response to calls for anti-hegemonic LIS education, the authors discuss a potential tool for Black student success and suggest its benefits to LIS education. The framework can introduce non-white, anti-racist educational practices to the work of educating the U.S. library workforce; it is relevant in light of ongoing racial and political strife in U.S. society.

It can be challenging to step away from our daily work in technical services. There are always invoices to be paid, licenses to be reviewed, and books to be cataloged. However, when we take a deep breath and “escape” together as a group, we can build new bonds and come up with fresh ideas. Leaving the day-to-day behind, spending time together in a different environment, and participating in thought-provoking activities can lead to many positive results. This chapter describes how a library technical services department held several staff retreats over a period of years.

It is estimated that over half of all information systems security breaches are due directly or indirectly to the poor security practices of an organization’s employees. Previous research has shown neutralization techniques as having influence on the intent to violate information security policy. Archival collections hold tangible documentation of the range of human experience. Diaries, letters, photographs, audio recordings, reports, and other paper and film-based materials tell the stories of people’s lives. Using examples from the vast parapsychology archives and rare book collections at the University of West Georgia, this paper will share people’s first-hand accounts of extraordinary incidents or of their supernatural abilities, from the profound to the disappointing, and from the unexpected to the purposefully sought, including near-death experiences, extrasensory perception, and psychedelic drug use.

The past year was incredibly challenging in all aspects of life and work, but the SCDM Unit endeavored to continue its mission of providing free and open access to Boise State research, investigate new innovative methods of scholarship, and support the Boise State research community.
