Including External Repositories In The Discovery Experience: Librarian Perspectives And Trends, Rebecca A. Nous
University Libraries Faculty Scholarship
The transition to a more unified discovery environment that encompasses both traditional library catalog content along with articles, streaming media, institutional repository content, and other additional resources, has resulted in changes to the management of library resources and the research experience. A survey was conducted to assess librarian’s and library personnel’s attitude toward and experience with the inclusion of this additional content in their discovery tools’ search results, as well as to learn what content is being searched and who is involved in maintaining these systems. Respondents generally reported being satisfied with the discoverability of these additional resources in their …

Pursuing additional degrees and certifications can be a costly proposition in terms of money, time, and return on investment that results in gainful employment. In this article, we take a look at how a group of Michigan teachers perceive the value of the knowledge gained in a graduate certificate program towards school library certification compared to their prior knowledge and level of importance they assigned to the learning standards.

University Libraries Faculty & Staff Presentations
This session features a librarian and faculty member sharing their collaboration on the “Visual Research Task,” which is an assignment designed to provide information literacy instruction with an emphasis on visual resources to theatre majors in a course on collaborative theatre production. Students are given a scenario in which they act as the assistant to a theatrical designer, working with limited information, must assemble a curated portfolio of ten images to support the design or conceptualization for a theatrical design, with descriptions and citations. Each student is given a different topic from a wide range, including for example, “royal pageantry,” …

What Documents Cannot Do: Revisiting Michael Polanyi And The Tacit Knowledge Dilemma, C. Sean Burns
What Documents Cannot Do: Revisiting Michael Polanyi And The Tacit Knowledge Dilemma, C. Sean Burns
Information Science Faculty Publications
Our culture is dominated by digital documents in ways that are easy to overlook. These documents have changed our worldviews about science and have raised our expectations of them as tools for knowledge justification. This article explores the complexities surrounding the digital document by revisiting Michael Polanyi’s theory of tacit knowledge—the idea that “we can know more than we can tell.” The theory presents to us a dilemma: if we can know more than we can tell, then this means that the communication of science via the document as a primary form of telling will always be incomplete. This dilemma …

An Empirical Study Of The Use Of Tools And Technologies For Knowledge Sharing In Development Organisations In Kenya, Peter Gatiti
Libraries
This paper presents findings from research conducted with development organisations in Kenya, concentrating on using ICT tools and technologies for knowledge sharing. Development organisations of different sizes and operating in various sectors were examined in a large-scale online survey. The study examines the application of a set of technologies, including ICT tools, social media tools, and collaborative tools. The study also considered the strategies employed by the development organisations in enhancing knowledge sharing. The data collected was in quantitative form, and therefore the analysis followed quantitative techniques, including descriptive and inferential statistics.
Findings revealed that technology supports the knowledge processes …

Archiving Catholic Faith On The Web During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Kayla Harris, Stephanie Shreffler
Marian Library Faculty Publications
In the middle of March 2020, an undergraduate English class from the University of Dayton visited the Marian Library for hands-on learning with primary source materials related to miraculous cures at the Lourdes shrine in France. Students in the upper-level seminar course that focused on narrative, rhetoric, and medicine prepared for the visit by reading an article about the baths at Lourdes, where thousands of pilgrims have traveled annually since the 1870s for a chance to be cured by the holy water from a spring.1 As students examined photographs, copies of case files, and historical narrative accounts, several of them …

[In the absence of an abstract, a selection from the introduction is provided.] On January 21, the Public Services Committee of the Consortium of Academic and Research Libraries in Illinois (CARLI) offered “The Pandemic Made Me Do It: Changing Public Services. This program was an open discussion for consortium members on two main topics: the changes in services that should be retained post-COVID-19; and changes in outreach due to COVID-19 and how they will affect future outreach practices. Regarding outreach, social media, and training, librarians noted a sharp increase of video instruction, including subject-specific short orientation videos. Additionally, some libraries …

"We Can Be Our Best Alliance": Resilient Health Information Practices Of Lgbtqia+ Individuals As A Buffering Response To Minority Stress, Valerie Lookingbill, A. Nick Vera, Travis L. Wagner, Vanessa L. Kitzie
Student Publications
This article examines the resilient health information practices of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, and asexual (LGBTQIA+) individuals as agentic forms of buffering against minority stressors. Informed by semi- structured interviews with 30 LGBTQIA+ community leaders from South Carolina, our findings demonstrate how LGBTQIA+ individuals engage in resilient health information practices and community-based resilience. Further, our findings suggest that LGBTQIA+ communities integrate externally produced stressors. These findings have implications for future research on minority stress and resiliency strategies, such as shifting from outreach to engagement and leveraging what communities are doing, rather than assuming they are lacking. Further, as …

Bibliodiversity At The Centre: Decolonizing Open Access, Monica Berger
Publications and Research
The promise of open access for the global South has not been fully met. Publishing is dominated by Northern publishers who disadvantage Southern authors through platform capitalism and open access models requiring article processing charges to publish. The South can reclaim and decolonize open access, nurturing scholarly communities, by employing bibliodiversity, a sustainable, anticolonial ethos and practice developed in Latin America. Self-determination and locality are at the core of bibliodiversity which rejects the domination of international, English-language journal publishing. As articulated by the Jussieu Call, varied scholarly community-based, non-profit, and sustainable models for open access are integral to bibliodiversity as …

Is “Just Googling It” Good Enough For First-Year Students?, Maureen Richards
Publications and Research
This study analyzes citations by first-year students to determine what content they were citing and whether it was available through the open web or the library. Examining the role of these two places as content providers for academic work fills a gap in the literature. Most of the cited works were available through the library and the open web. As the line between content providers continues to blur, these results can help academic libraries prioritize what to teach students about information literacy, where to focus collection development efforts and how to promote the discovery of library resources.

A Case Of Pre-Implementation Of The Integrated Repository For University Administration By Academic Librarians, Marek Deja, Leszek Szafrański
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
The purpose of this paper is to observe how employees of academic library administration are developing and how they comply with the internal quality assurance policy (IQA) regarding pre-implementation of the integrated repository (IR). We are interested in information practices of administration staff in the scope of cooperation and open communication with the management staff and external entities. We have studied the role of the current information practices in the successful implementation of IR at the university by academic librarians. We used the method of participant observation and unstructured interviews supported by BPMN modelling (Business Process Model and Notation) and …

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
What factors shape e-book adoption outcomes? What does the research literature on technology adoption and information behavior have to offer that informs understanding of e-book user behavior in terms of maturity model to distinguish between nascent and mature behaviors? Exploration of the literatures shows that e-book adoption behavior might be understood in terms of information behavior theory, factors in human-computer interaction and other theories. Hence, theoretical framework for this study incorporates technology acceptance model, unified theory of acceptance and use of technology, role of hedonic attributes, role of culture of use, role of facilitating conditions, familiarity, expectation confirmation theory, and …
