The Right To Read: The Fight To Desegregate Southern U.S. Public Libraries, Laura Wertz May 2021

The Right To Read: The Fight To Desegregate Southern U.S. Public Libraries, Laura Wertz

School of Information Student Research Journal

The segregation of U.S. public libraries, particularly in the southern United States, is a shameful chapter in library history. During the civil rights movement, the fight to desegregate was achieved through the bravery and courage of peaceful protesters that staged protests in libraries across the south. The purpose of this research paper is to examine how public libraries enforced segregation and some of the critical protests that took place. The paper also explores the lack of recognition and awareness within the librarianship profession and the general public and four recommendations for how public libraries can begin to make amends.

Central-Peripheral Information Behavior Theory, Laura Maw May 2021

Central-Peripheral Information Behavior Theory, Laura Maw

School of Information Student Research Journal

In researching information behavior theory, a significant gap has been revealed: How can information behavior theory comprehensively identify the information behaviors and needs of information communities without the foundational understanding of information, communication, and community, and their intersection? It is asserted in this paper that information behavior theory must clearly define information, communication and community, and how these terms intersect, to comprehensively identify information communities’ information behaviors and needs. To test this thesis, a qualitative study on the tourist information community has been conducted. Seen through the lens of the novel central-peripheral information behavior (CPIB) theory, the tourist information community’s …

What’S Mine Is Yours: The History Of U.S. Tool-Lending Libraries, Samantha Hamilton May 2021

What’S Mine Is Yours: The History Of U.S. Tool-Lending Libraries, Samantha Hamilton

School of Information Student Research Journal

Tool lending is a relatively new phenomenon in the world of libraries. Instead of loaning books, libraries with tool collections lend kitchen and yard tools to ambitious do-it-yourselfers. These tools can be used to tackle home projects or do seasonal cleanup without burdening borrowers with concerns about cost or storage. As these libraries gain popularity and begin to expand in the U.S., it is worth taking a look at their origins. As it is presented in the current literature, tool libraries began in 1979 with the founding of the Berkeley Tool-Lending Library (BTLL). Information unearthed from newspaper clippings, blog posts, …

Exhibits increase public knowledge of available collections, promote engagement with those collections, reach new audiences, and provide opportunities to build bridges across campus units. This case study looks at a rotating exhibition titled Moon at the University of Arizona Libraries Special Collections created to commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of the Apollo 11 Moon landing on July 20, 2019. This article covers exhibit design, programming and events that accompanied the exhibit, and coordinated efforts across the University of Arizona campus to celebrate this …

Contemplating Library Instruction: Integrating Contemplative Practices In A Mid-Sized Academic Library, Brooke Duffy, Lisa Rose-Wiles, Martha M. Loesch May 2021

Contemplating Library Instruction: Integrating Contemplative Practices In A Mid-Sized Academic Library, Brooke Duffy, Lisa Rose-Wiles, Martha M. Loesch

Library Publications

In recent years there has been growing interest in the integration of contemplative practices into higher education, but little has been published regarding contemplative practices or contemplative pedagogies in academic libraries. Nor have explicit links been made to critical librarianship (critlib), particularly regarding the stress associated with the profession and the “resilience narrative” of “doing more with less”. In this paper, we review the literature and describe our experiences introducing a variety of contemplative elements into our library instruction program, most recently in the virtual environment. Building on the three levels of “intervention” modeled by Barbezat and Bush (2014) to …

Marc-Y Marc And The Coding Bunch, Anna-Maria Arnljots, Paul Daybell, Kurt Meyer, Andrea Payant, Becky Skeen, Liz Woolcott

Library Faculty & Staff Presentations

MARC records were identified, isolated from the other search results, then analyzed and individually coded. Coding identified where search terms appeared in a record, determined whether search terms were present in full or in part within those fields, and ascertained what prominent categories of fields were missing from records. Analysis of results ultimately showed that including notes and summaries into catalog records is important for content retrieval, while subject headings were not as impactful for access, but may be valuable to a subset of users who take the additional step of viewing the complete records.

Turning The Key: Unlocking Library Support Through The Syllabus, Mallory Jallas, Allison Rand May 2021

Turning The Key: Unlocking Library Support Through The Syllabus, Mallory Jallas, Allison Rand

Faculty and Staff Publications – Milner Library

First-year seminars (FYS) provide an opportunity for librarians to engage with students early on in their academic careers. Some of these FYS courses might lack formal research or writing assignments, proving challenging for successful library integration. The presenters encountered this scenario during the spring of 2021 with sections of a University Success Skills course. They developed an instruction plan that helps students identify how the library can support them in any class and breaks down the hidden curriculum by exploring a syllabus in depth. The presenters use a syllabus to anchor the content and establish a framework for how the …

On "Developing Information Literate Abilities": Uncovering Whiteness At The Center Of The Acrl Framework For Information Literacy, Anders Tobiason

Library Faculty and Staff Publications and Presentations

What does it mean to be information literate? Who is the model information literate individual? Taking its cue from Critical Discourse Analysis and Antiracist Black Language Pedagogy, this presentation questions the foundational image of the information literate individual lying at the heart of the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy. Using critical race theory and an understanding of how whiteness functions as a presumed neutral background in our society, we begin to understand the whiteness of this individual. In this presentation, I briefly outline how whiteness functions and then move on to show how whiteness functions within the Framework more specifically. …

Is It Something We Didn't Ask? Examining Our Faculty's Motivation To Use Our University's Ir, Karen Ramsden, Darren Sweeper

University Libraries Scholarship and Creative Works

How can we encourage faculty to deposit their scholarly works in our university’s institutional repository (IR)? What motivates faculty to self-archive, and participate in the IR? The who self-archives question can be easily answered, but the why questions involve more rigor to find answers and create solutions. While there has been considerable attention dedicated to the development, implementation, and the initial population of content into the IR at Montclair State, there has been no data collection used to evaluate the IR, in regards to faculty awareness, and motivation to participate, and continued participation, that can help to strategically influence outreach …

But Were We Successful? Using Online Asynchronous Focus Groups To Evaluate Library Services, Rebekah Cummings, Lindsay E. Ozburn, Andrea Payant, Michael Shelton, Ryan Bushman

Library Faculty & Staff Presentations

USU launched a program in 2016 to connect researchers seeking federal funding with librarians to assist them with data management. This program assisted over 100 researchers, but was it successful? Our presentation will discuss how we evaluated the success of this program using online asynchronous focus groups (OAFG) in conjunction with a traditional survey. Our cross-institutional research team will share our findings as well as the challenges and successes of using OAFGs to assess library services.
