Let’s face it, sometimes librarians repeat the same content over and over. Or we have to present information that students find uninteresting and difficult to understand. To make repetitive, challenging library information engaging and entertaining, two librarians collaborated with their campus television production team to create videos to flip library instruction for education and nursing majors. After sharing basic information with a team of creative production interns and their faculty advisor, both librarians were thrilled with the inventive, instructive videos produced. Cornell University hosted its inaugural Ada Lovelace Day Wikipedia Edit-a-thon in 2019. Led by two librarians, this event is a chance to highlight the contributions of women past in present in the Sciences. Ada Lovelace is considered the first computer programmer and is a good example of the invisible contributions women have made in the field of the sciences. Participants learned how to edit in Wikipedia and both Cornell affiliates and people in the Ithaca community were welcome. We highlighted female-identified Cornell professors in the Sciences, https://guides.library.cornell.edu/adalovelace, with underdeveloped or no Wikipedia pages for real world examples as well.

The Changing Reference Landscape: An Assessment Of Mann Library's Combined Service Desk, Ryan Tolnay

This project examined and assessed reference services at Albert R. Mann Library following the creation of a combined service desk. I conducted a literature review and created a survey to determine what mode of research help patrons preferred. Survey respondents were fairly evenly split between their preferences and often stated the same reasons for their preference- convenience and accessibility. Recommendations include instituting a user experience team and training all access services employees on reference techniques and library resources. This will provide patrons with more accurate answers to their questions and continue to improve library services.

The reproducibility crisis in published scientific work is changing the way that research is designed and conducted. Librarians in academic institutions can play a key role in promoting improved adherence to evidence-based guidelines for performing literature reviews. Mann Library began piloting a new team-based service model in August 2019 to replace the liaison model. By separating into teams of instruction or research support and removing departmental outreach from individual librarian responsibilities, Mann librarians have been able to prioritize their functional areas of expertise that were increasing in demand and devote more time to innovative new projects. We have begun our assessment of the new model which will continue through 2020, but we are also taking an iterative approach as we implement these changes, gathering feedback from staff and course correcting as necessary.

As Graduate Services Coordinator at RIT, the presenter was asked to provide instruction on academic integrity to new graduate students for two consecutive Fall Semester Orientations. This presentation will compare and contrast academic integrity orientation activities delivered in the Fall 2018 Semester with those delivered in the Fall 2019 Semester. Twenty percent of Australians reported having a disability in 2015. Disability may occur at any time during the lifespan, however most disabilities are invisible. When a disability is invisible, or not immediately apparent to an outsider, individuals may need to self-identify to access inclusive services, or accommodation may never be offered at all.

When the perceived number of information seekers with a disability is low, information organisations may deem services unnecessary. Considering information access is a human right, information service providers and researchers need to seek low cost and low effort ways to facilitate information access and information seeking behaviors. …

The Earl K. Long Library at the Univeristy of New Orleans uses ScholarWorks@UNO, an open access digital repository, to collect, preserve, and disseminate Ocean Waves Workshop content for a global audience. ScholarWorks resides on the Digital Commons platform, which is optimized for discoverability through search engines such as Google Scholar, increasing visibility and impact. UNO library staff work with the Ocean Waves Workshop planning committee to assign metadata to workshop materials that can then be rapidly shared online. While we continue to produce theoretical concepts, frameworks, and ideas in library and information studies (LIS), these developments are not being tested and tried ‘on the ground.’ There is an imbalance of research across the disciplines in LIS coming out of the field, rather than out of the academy (Morris & Cahill, 2017).

On October 15, 2019, the Washington and Lee Law Library hosted the third bi-annual W&L Law Fall Scholarship Celebration. The event was co-sponsored by the Frances Lewis Law Center and took place in the Law Library's main reading room from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.

On display were dozens of scholarly articles, books, and chapters authored by the W&L Law faculty and student body during 2018 and 2019, with hundreds of additional works accessible online through the Scholarly Commons institutional repository.

Objective: To optimize librarian-mediated search services, librarians must consider all aspects of their search service that affect service utilization and efficacy. The library literature provides little information concerning the format in which libraries are providing literature search results and even less on the effect of format on search service utilization.  At our academic health science library, the number of search requests received rose dramatically after we began providing results in RefShare format. Since Wikidata’s launch in 2012 as an open, collaboratively edited knowledge base, it’s held great promise for the library and scholarly communication community more broadly. Institutions and individual information professionals turned Wikidatans are using Wikidata to build a community-owned infrastructure for the bibliographic ecosystem, including open source tools that generate profiles of scholars, organizations, and publications. This workshop will introduce participants to Wikidata and its linked data infrastructure, including opportunities for hands-on editing and an overview of tools that facilitate data contribution and use. The objective of this research is to assess student learning in a library one-shot for Nursing students who are beginning to navigate the scholarly research system and to identify and procure primary and secondary research studies to support a clinical change.

Methods

NURS 380 is the research and evidence-based practice course for second-year nursing students taken in concert with clinical experiences. Three sections of this course (36 students each) were given the same lecture, hands-on practice, and facilitated research time with the same librarian during a three-hour session of the course. This presentation given at the 26th National Conference on Students in Transition on October 14, 2019. The presentation discussed the creation and implementation of a collaborative professional development day designed to support transfer success through information literacy instruction. The project grew out of the results of an information literacy instruction survey, conducted at UCF and its partner colleges, which identified gaps between instruction at the university and college level.
