A hackathon is a social event that is focused on building small and innovative technology projects. The 2018 Hackathon hosted by the Washington State University's Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine aimed to solve rural health problems in Washington state. One major modification to the regular format of a healthcare hackathon was the inclusion of research librarians. Librarians with health sciences and business expertise provided research and library services at a designated Research Station, which included literature, patent, and internet searches. This session presents an innovative method for teaching PubMed searching skills using visual graphics in order to develop a strong searching skill base. This method can be utilized on other databases with a controlled vocabulary structure. It also differentiates and explains these differences with non-structured vocabularies. Most often used with novice searchers entering clinical years in medicine and other healthcare disciplines, it has also been used as a refresher for other students and faculty. Academic libraries often fill a variety of roles in response to the needs of teaching and research faculty while simultaneously navigating a rapidly changing information landscape. As higher education embraces students’ desire for active learning, experiential learning, and service learning, the support needs of teaching faculty also change. In the spirit of providing high-quality, relevant support, librarians at Michigan Technological University partnered with Ithaka S+R to explore the evolving teaching needs of Business Faculty. While the collaborative trend among professional social workers and librarians is garnering much-deserved attention, literature about social work students partnering with public libraries is virtually non-existent. In fact, there are at least 73 partnerships yet a scarcity of academic literature addresses social work interns within public libraries. While there are students at Canadian libraries, this research focuses on the bulk of known partnerships based in the United States. When submitting, authors work with students on the editorial team to co-create an infographic and video. Deciding whether to support discovery of metadata for unsubscribed content raises a lot of questions for technical and public services librarians, from the philosophical to the pragmatic. Doing so requires careful curation and monitoring of metadata sources, and benefits from library-wide input. During this session, presenters describe their process for vetting metadata collections with ILL and liaison librarians for inclusion in EDS. This involves a three-step evaluation of collections for overall metadata quality, likelihood of ILL fulfillment, and value to the collection. JMU Libraries distributes its Special Collections finding aids to a number of discovery platforms, a process which historically has involved a significant amount of hand-encoding and manual data entry. We recently developed and implemented Spaceport, a Python app that has revolutionized this workflow. This presentation provides an overview of the app's functionality, which includes generating EADs for Virginia Heritage, HTML files for upload to the Libraries website, and MARCXML records for our catalog and OCLC. It also describes the efficiencies and other benefits we have observed from Spaceport's use.
