The new Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education (ACRL, 2016) highlights the ability to synthesize ideas from multiple sources of information as one of the key knowledge practices. There is little generalizable empirical research based on cognitive science principles to guide information literacy instruction practice. The present study examined the effectiveness of elaborative interrogation instructional strategy on integration and transformation of ideas from multiple sources of information. 86 participants took part in the study via Amazon Mechanical Turk platform. Knowledge of the Reference and User Services Association (RUSA) Guidelines for Behavioral Performance of the Reference and Information Service Providers and an awareness of the books, databases, and other resources generally available in library reference collections are excellent pathways to train confident practitioners in reference service. Procedural knowledge of RUSA guidelines and intellectual ability are the basic skills required to answer a reference question. Yet at times, the reference interview is a labyrinthine process laden with confusion and emotion. There is a significant technology deficiency within the U.S. manufacturing industry compared to other countries. To adequately compete in the global market, lean manufacturing organizations in the United States need to look beyond their traditional methods of evaluating their processes to optimize their assembly cells for efficiency. Utilizing the task-technology fit theory this quantitative correlational study examined the relationships among software using probabilistic algorithms, lean methodology techniques, and manufacturer cell optimization results. Information Communication Technology (ICT) has provided plenty of opportunities and challenges to the Librarians. This paper discusses the cost effective ICT methods that have been implemented at Sri Sarada College for Women, Tirunelveli. The case study method has been adopted to study the purpose. Sarada Library has implemented library automation with barcode facility, institutional repository, library consortia, library 2.0 tools, coordinate NPTEL courses and conducted information literacy skill development programmes. Sarada library has implemented successful cost effective ICT methods and provided technological services to the end users.

As graduate students embark on research projects, they often are not fully aware of what paths they should take or the obstacles they may encounter. Effectively managing research data is a skillset that needs to be honed along the way. Trail guides, including librarians, can establish instructional signposts for relevant data management concepts. To be effective, guides need to be familiar with the knowledge and skill gaps of the explorers. Surveys were conducted at two medium-sized universities to assess perceived importance and knowledge of 12 research data management competencies, with a goal of informing education planning. Let The Right Ones In: Supporting Patrons As Content Creators With Libguides And Libguides Cms, Jeffrey M. Mortimore, Ruth L. Baker

With flexible access and permission features, LibGuides and LibGuides CMS offer an adaptable platform for hosting patron-created content. This paper highlights how librarians at Georgia Southern University opened their LibGuides CMS platform to host faculty and student projects and portfolios. Employing similar techniques, libraries can host a wide range of patron-created content while protecting library-managed guides and assets, controlling access to patron-created content, and protecting patron privacy. This paper provides a detailed overview of access and permission features available in LibGuides and LibGuides CMS, presents two case studies, and offers considerations and best practices for hosting patron-created content.

Materials from two collections were displayed.

The Latin American Sheet Music Collection, MSS 932 BC, 1835-1996, contains many illustrated scores which have the composers’ photographs and signatures. There are songs from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Mexico, Paraguay, Puerto Rico, and Uruguay, as well as Spain, Portugal, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, and the United States. The largest component is from Mexico. The musical range represented includes popular and classical music with boleros, tangos, marches, waltzes, corridos, rancheras, fox trot and regional canciones. Purpose: The purpose of this article is to introduce the idea of cultural humility, distinguish it from cultural competence, and argue that it has a role in librarianship. Design/methodology/approach: We use an interdisciplinary exploration of the concept of humility to understand what cultural humility means and how it differs from cultural competence and other approaches to intercultural communication in libraries.

Findings: Despite some reservations with the term itself, we find that a practice of cultural humility is more appropriate to front-line interactions in library contexts than cultural competence models.

Topic Development In The Freshman Engineering Paper: Finding A Focus, Edward J. Eckel

Topic development and focus are relatively neglected areas of the student research process. This study examined how students in a freshman engineering writing class developed initial research paper topics into focused thesis statements. A mixed methods approach was used, incorporating online surveys, qualitative interviews, and a rubric to track topic development and assess thesis statement focus. The survey results and student comments indicated that participants were more competent at the mechanics of finding sources and writing than at developing appropriately scoped thesis statements. Closer collaboration between writing instructors and librarians is urged to more effectively support and scaffold topic development.

What High School Students Want To Know About Music: An Information Literacy Instruction Course For A High School Music Camp, Michael J. Duffy Iv

The SEMINAR High School Summer Music Camp at Western Michigan University provided an opportunity to offer intensive music related information literacy instruction to a small group of high school students over a two-week session. These students participated in an assessment study in which they provided answers to questions related to information literacy learning outcomes before and after the course of instruction. This case study presents a model for lessons and curricular structure for an information literacy course in music for high school students.

Scrapbooks are notoriously difficult to digitize and present in a way that both preserves the context of the item and supports discoverability in a digital collection environment. Digitization of complex mixed media items is time consuming. Metadata creation is a challenge. By digitizing only the items that would be rendered inaccessible by encapsulation, questions about presentation were bypassed. Items could be presented as individual assets. An umbrella collection of archival supplementary material was created in CONTENTdm and individual items from the scrapbook were connected through metadata rather than as a singular resource. In a study by a team at the intersection of information and communication sciences and disorders, researchers worked to design an interactive, online professional development system for academic librarians to better serve students with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). In creating this program, it was imperative to have stakeholder input and support; recruiting members of this population, students with ASD, was critical. Amazon's Mechanical Turk and online discussion forums, including Reddit, were used for recruitment for an online survey. This article details an experiment in an 11^th and 12^th grade 3-week intensive course, the Science and History of Contagious Disease. The course was an interdisciplinary survey of how diseases are spread along with an examination of social responses. Although both lecture and discussion based, the course revolved primary around a trip in which we led approximately 22 students through archival research in the City of Savannah Municipal Archives on the Yellow Fever epidemics of 1820, 1854, and 1876. All too frequently, instruction librarians’ only opportunity to teach students distills down to the fifty-minute, one-shot, make-or-break experience. We disseminate the essential information as requested—how to use the library, how to search the databases, and so on—with little time to explain why all the pieces fit together and why they are important. Worse, well-intentioned librarians often strive to cover as much as possible in these sessions, oversaturating and frustrating their student audience.

Even in settings of brief duration with no follow-up, another approach is possible. Rather than attempting to demonstrate everything at once, we can interject effective, real-life motivational tactics …

Investigating The Effectiveness Of A Credit-Bearing Information Literacy Course In Reducing Library Anxiety For Adult Learners, Roslyn Grandy

This study examines levels of library anxiety in 30 adult learners before and after completing a two-credit information literacy course. A modified version of the Multidimensional Library Anxiety Scale was administered at the beginning and end of the course to compare levels of library anxiety. An analysis of the data revealed that the course was moderately effective in reducing library anxiety in adult learners. Awareness of library resources, comfort with the search process, and comfort level with library technology significantly increased after course completion. No significant decreases in library anxiety were reported in the areas of comfort level with staff …

This article describes the pilot year of a new model for information literacy instruction in first-year composition classes at the University of New Mexico. The flipped classroom model, the Association of College and Research Libraries Framework for Information Literacy in Higher Education, and challenges to library staffing sparked the implementation of research clinics, which are a blend of a flipped classroom and a research/reference consultation. This essay mixes epistemological considerations on truth and science, a critical information literacy exercise on the 5 Laws of MIL (Media and Information Literacy), LIS theory and international experience reports.
